Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments LOL, thanks David.

Hi Nissa, Zackery and welcome. Lots geeks or possibly nerds here. I've never settled on whether I'm a geek or a nerd, I always thought I was a nerd...

message 2152: by S.J. (new)

S.J. Faerlind (sjfaerlind) I'm SJ from Canada and I'm an avid fantasy fan of both reading and writing. I'm new to Goodreads and am still trying to figure it out. Some of my favourite authors are very old-school/traditional ones like Tolkein and C.S Friedman. (CS Friedman's Coldfire Trilogy is one of my favourites). I also like Brandon Sanderson, especially his Mistborn series. I liked George RR Martin's epic fantasy series at first but then it got a little too dark for my tastes..... Anyway, I'm happy to be joining this group and am looking forward to lots of good discussions!

Jennifer Boucher (jlboucher) Hi, everyone. I'm new and been lurking a bit in the shadows for a couple weeks. I'm from New Mexico just south of Colorado. I've always loved reading. My favorite authors are Jim Butcher (Dresden), Brent Weeks (Night Angel) and Kim Harrison (The Hollows). I find myself reading quite a bit of YA and attempting to recommend them to my youngest two (14 and 11). I'll try anything fantasy, I have a hard time getting into Sci Fi though. I've already picked up some recommendations by looking around and I'm looking forward to getting into some discussions.

Sharon Hi I'm Sharon I'm from Cairns in Australia. I've been reading fantasy as long as I've been able to read.I dont have a list of fav authors as I tend to devour books at a phenomenal rate & now I have in ipad I can overindulge myself even more with all these wonderfull indie authors Ive found.

message 2158: by Nicole (last edited Apr 08, 2012 11:33PM) (new)

Nicole Taylor Hello.
I'm Nicole and I'm from a little town near Melbourne, Australia. I've always read fantasy novels over most other genres. Since I grew up in a regional town, the most books they had at the library were the classic fantasy (Tolkien/Eddings) and Australian authors: Ian Irvine, Isobelle Carmody, Kate Forsyth, Garth Nix and Alison Croggon. I still love all these guys and get all their new books when I can. Since I've joined the site and the group I've found so many new books to read I have to stop myself clicking on all the recommendations.... but you know, curiosity always wins out.
New friends are welcomed, since I'm fairly new on the site as well and looking forward to having a look at next months read (since I have already read Graceling before).

Hi Jim
yes I agree the ipad is great for finding books and reading on. I've always passed my books onto my family as my cousins read fantasy / sci fi as well , so they are a bit sad now,lol !!
I've found so many indie authors to read and really out of the 40 or so books i've read since christmas only 1 or 2 had really bad editing & or storyline issues, and money wise you can almost get 3 or 4 for the price of 1 paperback, it's hard to pass on really.
Hope your still enjoying the ipad cheers sharon

Laura Reid (reid2l) Hi, I'm Laura, originally from Eastern Shore, Maryland and currently living in Germany (military family). Love reading anything that tells a good story and transports the reader. Earliest memory I have of reading began 35 years ago, in 3rd grade with Ramona and Beezus, J. Blume and Nancy Drew and 2 years later began devouring historical romances (Jude Devereaux and D. Gabaldon being faves (who doesn't LOVE Jamie?!!)), sprinkled with a few fantasy novels, until early adult. Went on a Stephen King, John Grishom, John Irving hiatus for a few years and then fell into religious and historical fiction (Rutherford, Margaret George, S.K. Penman, Anne Rice, A. Diamant, J. Aeul) for awhile. Robin Hobb, G.R.R.M, Greg Keyes and S. Lawhead brought be back home to fantasy and it's there I'm happiest, although lately i've read some WWII fiction that has left me engrossed but disturbed. So anyway, pleased to meet everyone, glad to join this group and look forward to finding some really good books, friends and discussions! ~Tcheuss

Lis (lazyseagull) Hello, everyone! I'm Lizzy, and I guess I hail from California. I write quite a bit on the side of things, but I'm still in school, so I haven't really had any time to do anything more than participate in NaNoWriMo and other writing contests on the side.

Some of my favorite fantasy/fiction authors are Robin Hobb, Lynn Flewelling, Roger Zelazny, Tamora Pierce, John Green, JK Rowling, Scott Lynch, and a great deal more. I'm always looking for new books in the fantasy genre. Glad to be here! :)

message 2169: by Emily (new)

Emily Hello! I've been creeping for awhile and I kind of like what I see, so I figure I better introduce myself before I start joining in on conversations. I live in Georgia (not the like Eurasian one, but like the one in the US). I started reading about 2 years ago, and since I was in high school I read a lot of YA. One day I decided young adult was just really boring, and that since I was in college that it was time to move up on the reading scale, and thus far fantasy has been my favorite adult genre. Honestly I haven't read many authors, but I did like Dianna Wynn Jones and now I'm reading George R R Martin. Other than at I was hoping y'all could help me out and point me in the right direction.

Charlie Armstrong (charmstr) Hi all. I'm Charlie. I'm unemployed, I'm married and I plan on turning 58 years old later on this year. I live in southern New Jersey between Philadelphia and Atlantic City. I love my dog, my wife, my children and my mother-in-law (not necessarily in that order). I've been reading fantasy fiction all my life starting with Andrew Lang's fairy books when I was a kid. To be fair, when I was a kid I would read anything that was put in front of me, but I did like science fiction and fantasy best.

For years, when asked (which was seldom) I said that John Crowley's Little Big was my favorite book and that Tim Powers was the author whose books I most anticipated. I'm not sure the first is true anymore--I don't think I have one truly favorite book--but the second still is. I find Christopher Moore hilarious and Terry Pratchett considerably less so. I have opinions about everything and much to the dismay of my family, I'm happy to share them.

I look forward to reading and posting in this forum and I look forward to meeting you all.

message 2176: by Veljko (new)

Veljko (_vxf_) Hello! My name is Veljko and fantasy is my guilty pleasure. Tolkien is, to me, the pinnacle.

But I have enjoyed all other sorts of fantasy literature, particularly in series - I have liked all the books in the Song of Ice and Fire yes, ALL, even the last ones.

I have recently read Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell and The Night Circus. Both great, but I think I enjoyed the former more, despite the delightful writing in The Night Circus.

I just started The Wheel of Time, after resisting the temptation for a long time... half-way through the first book, I am loving it. I hear the series loses steam down the road, but I will enjoy the ride while it lasts.

message 2179: by Laura (new)

Laura Reid (reid2l) I have tried on 3 different occasions to read Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell and just can't seem to get into it. I don't know if it's just too descriptive (which i usually like), not enough dialog (which really does bug me), or the theme/setting isn't interesting (but i really liked the temeraire books). Is it that i just haven't stuck with it long enough (not even sure i made it thru 1/4 of the book yet)?

message 2180: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) Hi all! I'm Hayley, 25, and I live in S. East England :)

I have always been a big fantasy fan (tho' you wouldn't guess from my TBR list at the moment :S). I've just started reading Game Of Thrones and am really loving it, just wish I could sit at work and read it instead of having to actually do work ;) At some point this year I am going to reread The Name Of The Wind as I kept getting distracted 1st tiem round so didn't take it all in :(

I have been reading fantasy since I was a kid, and have read literally thousands. My favorites include early Wolfe, Whittemore, Zelazny, Kay,G.R.R. Martin, Mièville, Constantine and lately some new indie authors which include D. T. Conklin, D.P. Prior and Scott Rhine. These are 5 star boys and they need to be noticed. Kris43 | 70 comments Hello!
My name is Kris. After lurking here for a while i finally gathered the courage to post something.
I joined because i like to have a group of people with similar views so we can feed each others passion:) And to find ideas for new reads.

I like epic and dark fantasy,(also like horror). Typical books that i adore are not easy reads. Off course there are some
exceptions and every now and then i read a trashy book.

I'm a fairly new reader, so i don't have a endless list of books that i love. Really love Brent's Night Angel trilogy, Ravenloft books, Vampire chronicles...

message 2186: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey Hello I'm Lindsey,
I joined this group because I have a true passion for reading fantasy books. Recently I read "Snow White, Blood Red" and enjoyed it very much. I also enjoy fantasy reads from J.R.R. Tolkien and Brian Froud. My all time favorite book is "Photographing Fairies" by Steven G. Szilagyi.

I enjoy dark fantasy books entwined with horror and a psychological twist. Things that would be eerie and uncomfortable for most people are what I enjoy reading the most. The more frightening the better. I typically do not enjoy quick or easy reads, however they are always appreciated it I do happen to pick one up.

Lauren Grimley (laurengrimley) Hi everyone,
Got to be honest, I never thought I'd join a group like this. As a kid, though I loved to read, I hated fantasy. Now, well, not only is it what I like to read the most, it's also what I write. There's a story to that, but it's long and most of you would find it boring.

Anyway, I'm a middle school teacher, author, and lover of great books and quit beaches. I look forward to getting some great advice and excellent recommendations here!

Welcome, Lauren. I'd love to read your story. How people come to fantasy is never boring. If you are shy to talk about it to everyone, we can become friends and you can send me a personal message with your story.

Oh, I'm not shy, just long-winded. The short version is when I was an education major I thought if I were going to be a "good" teacher I had to read what the kids were reading, which was Harry Potter. I soon became obsessed and it was only a matter of time before I began reading more adult fantasy/paranormal romance. Finally, two years ago, I put aside the realistic fiction novel I was writing and put all that fantasy reading to good use: I wrote my own!
Thanks for asking for the details!

Rachel Hunter Greetings!

I am a fantasy author, and I found this page while exploring the Goodreads website. It is certainly a pleasure to meet fellow readers and writers with a similar penchant.

As far as my favorite fantasy authors, I quite enjoy Tad Williams, David Eddings, Terry Brooks, and JRR Tolkien. But I am open to nearly every genre.

Glad to be here!

Rachel~

message 2192: by Kim (new)

Kim Hi All!

I'm Kim and live in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada, happily married with 2 children at home and 2 older kids with homes and families of their own.

My love for real fantasy really started about a year ago when I picked up the first of GRRM's Ice and Fire series! Love at first read and within a couple of months finished that series them moved onto the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind which I loved too although not quite as much as GRRM :-). I am now reading Patrick Rothfuss Kingkiller chronicle (read the first and just started the second) and love this author too. I think next on my list is either Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn?) or Robin Hobb (Farseer?).

I am happy to find this group and look forward to joining in on the discussions, figuring out who to read next and making new friends!

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Welcome everyone! Hope you enjoy yourself here and find lots of good books to read.

While I don't often poke my head into this thread (we have a couple of members who are very good at making folks feel welcome) it has come to my notice that we have many new members who write fantasy as well as read it. While you are all welcome, I'd like to remind you that it's the policy of this group that authors keep their comments about writing to the folders specified for them.

Author Self Promotion
Group Authors
TOPIC IN FOCUS For new writers to talk about why they write fantasy, etc.

This is, after all, a group for readers, not for writers. There are many groups on Goodreads specifically for Authors and I would encourage you to look for them to discuss your writing.

Thanks. And once again, welcome.

message 2196: by György (new)

György (Gmagoss) Hi all,

My name is György. I was born, raised and still live in Germany. A programmer by day I split my nights between my wife, online role playing and reading or should i rather say devouring books. I think my addiction to mystery and fantasy started with the greek sagas and other ancient mythologies. My current favorites are books by Kevin Hearne, Simon R. Green, Jim Butcher, Patricia Briggs, Trudy Canavan and lots of others. When I die I want to be reborn either as Oberon (Atticus' dog) or being trapped in my skull like Bob. And maybe joining this group and getting to know other authors will give me other choices.

Nice to meet you all...

message 2198: by Conrad (new)

Conrad | 17 comments Hello All,

I'm Conrad, a Canadian who lives and works in Japan. I work at the local uni as a lecturer. When school is out I do freelance translation J<>E and some graphic design work.

I am a voracious reader of fantasy and dip occasionally into SF. And have been since high school. Sadly most of my books are still on the parent's farm as I can't easily bring them over.

Currently I am enjoying the Black Library's catalogue and their grim outlook on reality. I also enjoy Glen Cook, J.V Jones, Mark Lawrence, Stan Nicholls, Karen Miller,Michael Moorcock, kevin Hearne, Joe Ambercrombie, Andrzej Sapkowski, Steven Burst, James Barclay, David Dalglish, Brent Weeks, Karl Edward Wagner, Markus Heitz and a couple dozen more.

After reading I enjoy practicing Naginata, both old and new styles.
A close third is traveling around on my Kawasaki.

In the near future I would like to start a magazine devoted to Fantasy like Asimov's Science Fiction. If it's allowed I'd like to ask the readers here their opinion on this idea once I've got things sorted out.

Anyway, that's about it for me. Looking forward to reading along with everyone.

Thanks for reading and have a great week.
Sincerely,
Conrad

Terri Rochenski | 30 comments Well, I keep trying to reply to specific posts & it's not letting me. So...

Hayley - The Name of the Wind KICKS butt! Awesome read - my fav so far this year.

Melinda - thanks for listing those '5 star boys'. I'm definitely going to check them out!

Kris43 - HUGE fan of Brent Weeks, too!

Kim - Rothfuss & Goodkind!!! Woo Hoo! (Goodkind is by far my all-time fav.)

To everyone else - thanks for the warm welcome. I'd have stopped back in sooner, but I'm NOT getting notifications from this group...?

Anyhoo, I'm a fantasy writer & reader. Terry Goodkind, Robert Jordan, Brent Weeks are probably my top 3 favs. I'm always wanting to know which books others love - I'm willing to read just about any sub-genre of fantasy as long as I'm transported out of this world & into another.
