Thanks John, it looks like this is a great group to be a part of! =)

Thanks Mike! It's great to have so many ppl. welcome us to the group! =)

Hi Christina! You will really enjoy the Game of Thrones once you pick it up and start reading it! The series itself has 5 books so far, and each one is extremely long... I have recently purchased the other 4 books to go along with Book 1 so that I can just keep reading when I am finished with the first. Happy Reading! =)
Hi all, My Name is Robert and I live in a small town in North Queensland, Australia. After I read a Mark Twain novel about A Connecticut in King Arthur's court, I never look back to reading, also started my writing.
My favorite authors are said in all the above posts but to think Mark Twain that start my reading Fantasy is a pleasure to me.
Okay I consider Tolkien number one in Epic fantasy such as the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings, and too many to list because most are already said.

Hi Christine, thanks for the info! My library hold just got it back in so I've got to pick it up this week and give it a try. I'm considering just purchasing them too - their used and Kindle prices are cheap and I love that too - just being able to pick up the next book right away and keep reading :)

Hi Krysta, welcome, I'm new here too... but joined up with the group for the same reason... I've been using Goodreads, but needed to have some discussion involved around the books too!

I have read Game of Thrones. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I happened to be reading it at the same time that I was watching episodes of the HBO series adaptation of the book. I bought A Clash of Kings, the next in the novel series, and hope to read that before the HBO series picks up again.

John,Thanks for the welcome. You made me laugh that reading is a dying art. I think reading is not a dying art. It is alive and kicking when there is books to read in any format(paper or digital).

Hi Krysta! I saw your post and sent you a friend request! I see you are also reading A Game of Thrones series as well. I am still trying to get through book 1. Very long series but I am excited to read it. =)

I hope to chat with people here about their favorites so I can find more good things to read.

:O I finished the series awhile back. I hope you enjoy it though! Thanks for the welcome and friend requests. :)

Thanks for letting me join, and I look forward to congregating with everyone. :)

P.S. I'm Dutch so my English might be lacking.

Welcome Lavinia. While you're more than welcome to join in discussions, I suggest you read the group rules and Goodreads Author Guidelines about promoting your own work in groups.

Marjorie, if you're looking for recommendations you've certainly come to the right place. Based on the couple of books you rattled off, I'd personally suggest giving Joe Abercrombie and Brandon Sanderson a shot.

Structural or wildland?

Swedish fantasy, well Bertil Mårtensson wrote some reasonably good ones (Vägen Ut etc were originally published in the late 70ies, but revised in the 90ies. Vingmästarens Dotter was released in the 90ies too), but if he's been translated into English is anybody's guess.
Then there's Eric Leijonhufvud, but his books sucked so badly I couldn't even finish one.
Contemporary fantasy: Andreas Roman (http://www.andreasroman.com) and Erik Granström. The latter has been well revceived (Svavelvinter), although I haven't read anything by him, mostly because he used to be heavily involved in D&D and IIRC Svavelvinter is based on a D&D campaign or something similar, and I've never much cared for those kind of books.
Sweden does better in horror with John Ajvide Lindqvist, Anders Fager and Kristoffer Leandoer. There's also SF short stories (Svålhålet) from Mikael Niemi, Harry Martinsson's space epos Aniara (which is fantastic, but is written in the form of an epic poem, so I realize it's not everyone's cup of tea) and Karin Boye's Kallocain (a dystopia), and while it's a little bit out there, I'd also like to recommend a SFF classic with a main character that Neil Gaiman's Desire probably owes a lot to called The Queen's Tiara by Carl Jonas Love Almqvist.
Lately in the YA circuit there's been a teen witch book called Cirkeln set in a small town, which was pretty good for that sort of thing.
I know John Ajvide Lindqvist, Mikael Niemi, Harry Martinsson, Karin Boye and CJL Almqvist are available in translation, not sure about the other ones.

I'm S.B. and I'm from Oklahoma. I'm married with two kids and a cat who doesn't like me. My ereader is the Kindle app on my iPad.
I've been a voracious reader since I first discovered Encyclopedia Brown in grade school. I enjoy a wide range of books, but Fantasy is my genre of choice most of the time. I love getting lost in strange, wonderful worlds and spending time with rich characters. I love that the genre has no limitations, allowing authors to explore the story they have to tell by any means they can dream up.
I work as a counselor at a youth and family service. I enjoy being able to help youths work through the tough times they're experiencing. I got into my fair share of trouble in my teens, so I think it helps that I can draw from my own background.

Jeff from Massachusetts. My genre of choice is fantasy, though I read just about anything fiction. I'm a sucker for cross-genre stories in the spirit of Stephen Donaldson's 'The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant', Octavia Butler's 'Lilth's Brood', Connie Willis' 'Doomsday Book'. Other favorites are Salvatore, Friedman, Steakly, Weis, Hickman, etc...
I typically seek books out of the Fantasy mainstream (i.e. non-Middle Earth type settings and characters).
Looking forward to the interaction.

I'm Gilberto from Oregon. I joined Goodreads a while ago, but I barely decided to fully use my account. I hope that I can participate in fun discussions and receive good book recommendations in this group.
My favorite book series is A Song of Ice and Fire. I love books with three dimensional characters or a very well developed world. I usually read High Fantasy and Sword and Sorcery.

I'm 23 and in college, majoring in Nutrition and minoring in English. Besides reading I enjoy baking, swing dancing, and spending time with my dog. Fantasy has always been my favorite genre. Some of my earliest fantasy reads were by Tamora Pierce and Diana Duane. Recent favorite authors include Brandon Sanderson, Brent Weeks, and Patrick Rothfuss.

I joined goodreads a couple of a years ago just to keep track of my book collection between school and home, but recently I've found myself using it for its intended purpose (rating, commenting, discussing books and all that). I've found some really good books on this site that I probably would have never found without it! So I thought it was high time to join a group.
I love all sorts of fantasy, though recently I've been on a bit of a dystopian fantasy kick. I can't stand the vampire trend going on right now, though I have to admit that I haven't given it much of a chance after Twilight. I'm excited to join discussions in the group as well as reading the monthly books (schoolwork pending). And that's all, I guess!
