Shoshana (shoshanad) Hello! Thought I'd given this introduction thing a shot. My name is Shoshana and I'm a university student from Toronto, Canada, right now studying in Halifax. I've been an avid fantasy reader since my Dad turned me on to Piers Anthony and Robert Aspirin (arguably somewhat sci-fi there) when I was just a kid. Since then I don't think I've ever left the house without a book in hand...

I joined goodreads a couple of a years ago just to keep track of my book collection between school and home, but recently I've found myself using it for its intended purpose (rating, commenting, discussing books and all that). I've found some really good books on this site that I probably would have never found without it! So I thought it was high time to join a group.

I love all sorts of fantasy, though recently I've been on a bit of a dystopian fantasy kick. I can't stand the vampire trend going on right now, though I have to admit that I haven't given it much of a chance after Twilight. I'm excited to join discussions in the group as well as reading the monthly books (schoolwork pending). And that's all, I guess!

Hi Christina! You will really enjoy the Game of Thrones once you pick it up and start reading it! The series itself has 5 books so far, and each one is extremely long... I have recently purchased the other 4 books to go along with Book 1 so that I can just keep reading when I am finished with the first. Happy Reading! =)

Hi all, My Name is Robert and I live in a small town in North Queensland, Australia. After I read a Mark Twain novel about A Connecticut in King Arthur's court, I never look back to reading, also started my writing.
My favorite authors are said in all the above posts but to think Mark Twain that start my reading Fantasy is a pleasure to me.
Okay I consider Tolkien number one in Epic fantasy such as the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings, and too many to list because most are already said.

Hi Christine, thanks for the info! My library hold just got it back in so I've got to pick it up this week and give it a try. I'm considering just purchasing them too - their used and Kindle prices are cheap and I love that too - just being able to pick up the next book right away and keep reading :)

I have read Game of Thrones. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I happened to be reading it at the same time that I was watching episodes of the HBO series adaptation of the book. I bought A Clash of Kings, the next in the novel series, and hope to read that before the HBO series picks up again.

John Beachem | 373 comments A warm welcome to Krysta, Shosh and Robert. I can't believe how quickly people keep joining :). Makes me glad to know there are still so many fantasy readers out there, though. Before I found this group I was beginning to think reading in general was a dying art. Heh.

John,Thanks for the welcome. You made me laugh that reading is a dying art. I think reading is not a dying art. It is alive and kicking when there is books to read in any format(paper or digital).

message 1965: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (kevn57) Hi everyone, I'm from upstate NY and love to read, most genres but fantasy is a particular favorite. I started off long ago with Peter Pan, the Hobbit then LOTR. Tolkien is my favorite author buts some others are Moorcock, Howard, Asprin, McCaffrey, Gaiman, Kim Harrison, and Terry Pratchett.

I hope to chat with people here about their favorites so I can find more good things to read.

Olga Godim (olgagodim) | 85 comments Hi, everyone. I'm from Vancouver, Canada. I love fantasy, have been an avid fantasy reader since my first fantasy novel - Mercedes Lackey's The Magic Pawn. My favorite fantasy writer at the moment is Sharon Shinn. Favorite series: probably Lackey's Valdemar series, although I enjoyed many others: Tanya Huff, Patricia Briggs, Wen Spenser. I also write fantasy but I'm not going to talk about my writing in this group.

I found this site when looking for book clubs on google and it seems like this one is paydirt. :) I look forward to lots of discussions with you guys. As for me, I am an IT Manager, A karaoke superstar, and an aspiring writer. I have one book in print to my credit, which I wrote under my Pseudonym, Gus Gallows, and hope to have many more in the years to come. I love gaming, especially World of Warcraft, because, well, because I am a geek and love all things fantasy. Can't wait to get to know everyone. :)

Ana-Maria (leo_amabi) Hello, I have actually technically been a member for quite a while, but haven't actually done anything here. I'm trying to get back to my "reading roots," so I'll actually attempt to be a productive member! I fell in love with fantasy when I was a little girl and my stepfather gave me Alanna: The First Adventure for Christmas. After all these years, I still cherish that present!

message 1976: by Ann (new)

Ann Gimpel I'm Ann. I've been reading fantasy for probably fifty years. The last four of those, I started writing fantasy and science fiction. In that time, I've sold ten short stories and two novels. All that time I've spent in alternative universes gave me a rich inner life. Another novel will be out in July and I just finished a fourth featuring different characters and a different world. I'm retired from a long career as a psychologist. I think the pspychology aspect has helped a lot with writing credibly about people.

message 1977: by Evilynn (new)

Evilynn | 106 comments Hi, I float around various SFF groups on GoodReads and I suppose it's polite to say hi before barging in on more discussions. ;) My love of fantasy probably springs from an early love of sagas and fairy tales, although I tend to mix it up with SF, speculative fiction and the occasional work of lit!fic too.

message 1978: by Lavinia (new)

Lavinia Thompson (lavinia_thompson) Hey everyone :) I am both a writer and a reader of fantasy. Just love it! Especially anything to do with witches. Any one know of any good books about witches, let me know!!! I'm always looking for good ones. :)

Jelmer | 16 comments I'm Jelmer and I recently started wanting to read more fantasy books. I always liked fantasy and considered it my favourite genre. But I didn't read much books because I usually was busy gaming. I've read lot's of young adult fantasy but I got sick of it after a while. Now I'm reading The wheel of time series. Other series I've read recently are The first Law trilogy, I've read the first book out of the Asoiaf series and Lord of the rings but that was two years ago. I joined this community for book recommendations and maybe make some friends along the way.

P.S. I'm Dutch so my English might be lacking.

Marjorie (marjoriesbooks) Hello, my name is Marjorie and I'm new to goodreads. I've joined a couple book clubs but I feel the one I need the most help from is this one. I haven't read many fantasy books yet the ones I have, I have loved. I'm hoping that will continue, so I joined this club in the hope of being reccomended a giant pile of excellent reads. In the fantasy genre I'm currently reading: a feast for crows and the book of lost tales.

Marjorie, if you're looking for recommendations you've certainly come to the right place. Based on the couple of books you rattled off, I'd personally suggest giving Joe Abercrombie and Brandon Sanderson a shot.

Oliver Neubert (Oliver_Neubert) I joined Goodreads in December 2011 and found some interesting books by making new friends and reading their reviews and comments. I used to read Business and Manufaturing books for the last ten years, but since joining I have stopped watching TV and found my way back into fantasy books which I used to read a lot - and I am loving it. I am looking for some fantasy books from Australia and Sweeden just to get a taste from other countries. I have ordered Heart's Blood from Juliet Marillier - does anyone have other suggestions?

J.K. II (jkmillerii) Hi all! I'm J. K. Miller II; reader of fantasy, mystery, and a future author (Reborn released March 2012). Fantasy will always be my favorite genre to write and read. It just detaches me from this world. Ideas can flow untarnished in fantasy. I was just browsing and came across this group. Nice to meet you all!

Evilynn | 106 comments Oliver wrote: "I am looking for some fantasy books from Australia and Sweeden just to get a taste from other countries. I have ordered Heart's Blood from Juliet Marillier - does anyone have other suggestions? "

Swedish fantasy, well Bertil Mårtensson wrote some reasonably good ones (Vägen Ut etc were originally published in the late 70ies, but revised in the 90ies. Vingmästarens Dotter was released in the 90ies too), but if he's been translated into English is anybody's guess.

Then there's Eric Leijonhufvud, but his books sucked so badly I couldn't even finish one.

Contemporary fantasy: Andreas Roman (http://www.andreasroman.com) and Erik Granström. The latter has been well revceived (Svavelvinter), although I haven't read anything by him, mostly because he used to be heavily involved in D&D and IIRC Svavelvinter is based on a D&D campaign or something similar, and I've never much cared for those kind of books.

Sweden does better in horror with John Ajvide Lindqvist, Anders Fager and Kristoffer Leandoer. There's also SF short stories (Svålhålet) from Mikael Niemi, Harry Martinsson's space epos Aniara (which is fantastic, but is written in the form of an epic poem, so I realize it's not everyone's cup of tea) and Karin Boye's Kallocain (a dystopia), and while it's a little bit out there, I'd also like to recommend a SFF classic with a main character that Neil Gaiman's Desire probably owes a lot to called The Queen's Tiara by Carl Jonas Love Almqvist.

Lately in the YA circuit there's been a teen witch book called Cirkeln set in a small town, which was pretty good for that sort of thing.

I know John Ajvide Lindqvist, Mikael Niemi, Harry Martinsson, Karin Boye and CJL Almqvist are available in translation, not sure about the other ones.

S.B. Davidson (sbdavidson) Hi everyone,
I'm S.B. and I'm from Oklahoma. I'm married with two kids and a cat who doesn't like me. My ereader is the Kindle app on my iPad.

I've been a voracious reader since I first discovered Encyclopedia Brown in grade school. I enjoy a wide range of books, but Fantasy is my genre of choice most of the time. I love getting lost in strange, wonderful worlds and spending time with rich characters. I love that the genre has no limitations, allowing authors to explore the story they have to tell by any means they can dream up.

I work as a counselor at a youth and family service. I enjoy being able to help youths work through the tough times they're experiencing. I got into my fair share of trouble in my teens, so I think it helps that I can draw from my own background.

message 1995: by Jeffery (new)

Jeffery Moore (jffjemoo) Hi All,

Jeff from Massachusetts. My genre of choice is fantasy, though I read just about anything fiction. I'm a sucker for cross-genre stories in the spirit of Stephen Donaldson's 'The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant', Octavia Butler's 'Lilth's Brood', Connie Willis' 'Doomsday Book'. Other favorites are Salvatore, Friedman, Steakly, Weis, Hickman, etc...
I typically seek books out of the Fantasy mainstream (i.e. non-Middle Earth type settings and characters).

Looking forward to the interaction.

Gilberto (lordreblik) | 2 comments Hello everyone,

I'm Gilberto from Oregon. I joined Goodreads a while ago, but I barely decided to fully use my account. I hope that I can participate in fun discussions and receive good book recommendations in this group.

My favorite book series is A Song of Ice and Fire. I love books with three dimensional characters or a very well developed world. I usually read High Fantasy and Sword and Sorcery.

I'm 23 and in college, majoring in Nutrition and minoring in English. Besides reading I enjoy baking, swing dancing, and spending time with my dog. Fantasy has always been my favorite genre. Some of my earliest fantasy reads were by Tamora Pierce and Diana Duane. Recent favorite authors include Brandon Sanderson, Brent Weeks, and Patrick Rothfuss.

Aderyn Wood (aderynwood) Hi all. I'm new to Goodreads as well as this group. I'm so impressed by the whole site and wished I new about it before now!

I have always loved fantasy fiction but 'went off it' for a few years. Now I'm back into it. I'm reading 'Game of Thrones' and loving it.
