Hi D.G. and welcome to the group. If you're looking for recommendations for books you've definitely come to the right place. I always start right off by recommending [Book: A Game of Thrones], which might not be a great idea on my part, as it probably scares some people away from the genre. Heh.
Not scary, it's... horrific... but not in the way you're probably thinking. Heh. It's intense and incredibly violent, filled with taboo subjects, detestable people, and moments that will make you question your faith in humanity. It's bloody brilliant :)
John wrote: "You most definitely should :-D"Agreed. It's the keystone fantasy series of our lifetime. I would put the Song of Ice and Fire series in a diving ring of fantasy literature with Tolkien, Howard, and the Old Norse Sagas.

I have the series on my iPod already and I'm planning to start it next year as soon as I finish Harry Potter (yup...I'm reading HP for the first time.) *ducking*
:p
Hi Tim. Welcome to the group, and huzzah for fellow Gaiman fans! :)D.G., wow, that's incredible. How have you dodged HP for so long? At this point that actually takes some skill ;)
Hi, another from Colorado here. My name is Kathy (I'm signed in as K.A. Krisko) and I live in northern Colorado with my two cattle dogs (one dog, two dog, red dog, blue dog). I live in a pretty isolated area and I just got DSL. No bookstores around here; it's all on-line for me. That means I need recommendations from people with the same interests! I'm thinking of getting a Nook Color or Kindle Fire now that I have the speed to download ebooks (I'll look for any threads discussing which is better). But right now it's paper for me.
I'm particularly interested in stronge woman characters. Think Marion Zimmer Bradley but not Twilight. I also read a great deal of non-fiction (science & nature & biography) and like true crime and mystery.
I've been looking for an active Sci-fi & fantasy forum for a while...looks like this one has some activity! I'll be checking out the other threads...
Every time someone asks about strong female characters I recommend this series (and all my friends here know what's coming LOL). One of my favorite novels is The Deed of Paksenarrion. The Deed is a trilogy in an omnibus edition. I can't recommend it highly enough.

There are some follow up novels in which one of the main characters is a female captain from the Paksenarrion series. It's not a completed series yet and I don't like it as much as the trilogy, but I do like it a lot. If you like The Deed of Paksenarrion you might like those. There's also the Green Rider books. Green Rider is the first. It also has a strong female lead.
Kathy--I would be able to give you a ton of suggestions for strong heroines. One series many people love is Magic Bleeds by Ilona Andrews. Send me a message or check out my books if you want more ideas.PS Mike, I just got Deed from the library. ;)
Hope you like it Carol. I haven't read the Magic Bites books yet, though it's on my shelf and I keep meaning to get to it. Maybe I should get a library edition and then I'd have to read it. LOL.I'm almost through Rosemary and Rue (from the library of course)(another recommended by a friend here). It seems okay. I like it enough that if it doesn't crash and burn (or turn into PNR) I'll probably follow it up. You know I'm not a fan of romance at all. I don't mind a love story as part of an overall book, but don't get into it as a primary theme. This one hasn't gone down the PNR/friendly romantic vampire route that so many of the books I've tried lately.
October Daye series is alright. Mostly flirting--light on the romance. I have the third book from the library myself. Ihave very mixed feelings about the series, so I usually don't recommend, even i though do read it. Looking forward to Deed.
Hi everyone! I'm a 28 year old geek girl from Philadelphia. I'm a professional makeup artist, I have a dog and three cats, blah blah blah.I only just recently got down big time with fantasy, just really dabbled here and there before. I was on a pretty big post-apocalyptic kick, and before that stuck to a lot of quirky fiction. I'm a huge fan of Tolkien, R.A. Salvatore, George R.R. Martin. I also read a lot of books based off of video games (gamer girl!), but only about half of them are really any good (thank you, David Gaider). Sad face.
Some books I've recently read (and loved) include:
the Bitterwood series
John Dies at The End
Dragon Age Asunder
Nightwatch
Deuces! :D
Hello I am Ashley and have been reading Fantasy novels since I was in middle school and found Tamora Pierce on the shelves. I mostly stuck to young adult fantasy novels, but have since moved on to more adult fantasy novels. A few of my favorites are The Kingkiller Chronicles, The Sword of Truth series (currently on book 5) and The Magicians. Hope to find more books in this group that I can read and love!Oh and Im from Texas and currently live in Seattle.
Sorry I haven't been around to welcome all the new folks. Holidays and whatnot. Anyway, welcome to all the new blood!
I'm Paul and I'm a reader (Hi, Paul). I started reading Fantasy & SF when I was nine or ten and haven't stopped since. I started out strong in Fantasy with The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Right around the time I finished LOTR, The Sword of Shannara hit the NYT bestseller list and the genre exploded. I proceeded to read as much as I could devour not even caring about the quality. My taste has gotten a little more discerning as the years have gone on but I will still read the usual sort of stuff to scratch that particular itch. My current favorite author is Joe Abercrombie.
hello,I'm an avid reader of fantasy. My favorite subgenre is epic fantasy (LOTR ,WOT,etc).I'm not a great supporter of the contemporary vampire/romances which have flooded the genre.(anybody else agree?)
A warm welcome to Paul and Evern. Hope you enjoy the group. Paul, I'm going to be reading Abercrombie's [Book: The Heroes] soon. Have you read it? Evern, right there with ya on the vampire romance stuff. Ugh.
Hello, my name is Ann-Marie, born & raised in NJ, the Philly part not the NYC area. I have always been a big reader although it's only been the last year & a half or so that I have been reading fantasy novels. A couple of friends were raving about the Dresden books & were very excited about Changes being released when I was between books so I got the first 3 books & was hooked. I read that series (not a huge fan of Ghost Story though), moved onto George R.R. Martin & Joe Abercrombie & I am presently working my way through the Glen Cook Black Company series.
I found this site a few months ago when I was searching for book suggestions & now that the holidays are done I have the time to join some boards here & start participating in some discussions.

Hi I'm Molly, a 29 year old student-with-crap-job from Virginia- I've loved fantasy since I was little. My favorite authors are Sarah Monette, Joe Abercrombie, Patrick Rothfuss, Terry Pratchett, and numerous others. I too am a little put off by the vampire-werewolf-etc romance trend. I don't mind romantic elements in my fantasy, and sometimes I really like it if it's well done, but I don't like feeling like I've been manipulated by marketing into buying a romance novel with a Tolkein-colored paint job. That's one of the reasons I joined Goodreads- that and finding things I'd never heard of to add to my massive list of things I should read.
Hi, I'm Jaclyn. I live in the New Orleans area and I will read just about anything (that's not twilight or Hawthorn). I've been a FSF fan since I've been able to read a sentence by myself. While more of a science fiction fan, I do enjoy the epic fantasy now and again (though I have yet to read LOTR, which freaks out my students). Unfortunately, I am horrible with names and barely remember what books I've read, which is one of the big reasons I joined Goodreads in the first place. Oh, and I'm a chemistry teacher.
I'm Christina, from Portland Oregon. I live here with my husband, and our five kids. I'm a fiber artist for work (and fun), an avid knitter and sometimes pattern designer. I like to play Magic: The Gathering with my husband, and now our oldest boys play also. Around all those things, I fit in reading as much as I can. I began reading horror fiction and true crime as a kid, and moved into urban fantasy/horror and eventually made my journey to high fantasy as I grew older. I still like most all forms of fantasy and am always drawn to the supernatural side. I also like to read historical fiction & biographies.
My favorite and incomplete series/book list if I have to think of them right now, are (in no particular order):
The Eye of the World (Series)
The Hobbit
The Lord of the Rings (Series)
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Series)
A Discovery of Witches
The Six Wives of Henry VIII
I'm Jeremy. Currently living in Wisconsin, but I've lived all over and in South Korea for a bit. I've had a few different stabs at careers, but currently in a PhD program for microbiology.Love fantasy and urban fantasy. I'll read the occasional horror, but not my favorite. I tend to like stuff a bit more on the character-driven side.
I flip-flopped in that when I was younger, I was really into sci-fi and not so much fantasy, and now it's the total opposite.
I love to read, and am finding myself more and more drawn to Fantasy novels. I read a lot of YA books, I enjoy all sorts of genres, not to picky. I originally grew up in Idaho, and Bay Area California, now I am in the mid-west, I miss the west:) My favorite fantasy novels to name a few are:
Unicorn Girl by M.L. LeGette
Crown Duel by Sherwood Smith
The Seer and the Sword by Victoria Hanley
Legacy by Cayla Kluver (My all time favorite fantasy thus far) In fact I would like to find more fantasy stories to read with the same theme if anyone has any recommendations that would be awesome. Story has kings, queens, princess, prince, kingdoms with impending war (don't want it the main focus of story), mystery, intrigue and romance.
Hello Everyone! My name is Christine and I am new to the group. I have been a huge fan of Fantasy books since I was a little girl. I recently started reading The Game Of Thrones (Bk 1) and I absolutely love it. I still have yet to finish The Harry Potter series, and of course Tolkien's books. I recently bought The Kingkiller Chronicles and The Seven Realms (Bk 1-3) which I can't wait to start reading.
I've yet to read Game of Thrones - my MIL recommended it - I had gotten it from the library system after a couple months hold wait, but had too many other books that came in at the same time and had to return it unread. I have a big list of immediate to-read books right now, but I want to get it read at some point this year, at least the first book. I've heard too many good things about this series to pass it by!
Not too shabby, Mark, thanks :). Just starting Joe Abercrombie's [Book: The Heroes], and I'm looking forward to the experience.
Hi, I'm Darcy. I'm a college student in MA, but I'm originally from MD. I just recently got back into reading since my first semester was really busy. I hope that I discover some amazing books from joining this group! :)
Hello, I am Dana and I live in Florida with my husband. I have recently moved to the sunshine state and lovin' it. I am currently reading the "Ice and fire" series by George R.R. Martin. I am half way through "A Clash of Swords" and am obsessing over it. I love to hop into this bookclub and read what others have to say about these books. They truly are a must read.
Welcome to Darcy and Dana. I hope we can give you some good recommendations. Shouldn't be too difficult. If there are two things we have plenty of in this group it's members and recommendations :).
John wrote: "Welcome to Darcy and Dana. I hope we can give you some good recommendations. Shouldn't be too difficult. If there are two things we have plenty of in this group it's members and recommendations :)."Thanks! I already have a to-read list a mile long thanks to this group. :P
Hey, my name is Krysta and I joined GoodReads about two months ago. I've been enjoying the site so far, but I'm feeling a little isolated without anyone to talk to about the books I've read. (Which spurred my decision to join this group.) So, I'm looking forward to finding and trading some good discussion and possibly recommendations here.
