Wheel of Time,Chronicles of Ancient Darkness, The Bartimaeus Trilogy, Dune, Shannara series.
I am not too much into dragons, vampires or werewolves, I like new characters, new ideas and different scenarios and unexpected outcomes.
I am looking forward to participate in this group and to meet many fanatsy fans.
Oliver

I live in Atlanta and by day I'm an analyst at a bank and by evening, I write. Currently, I'm working on a YA fantasy series that's outside the realm of vampires and werewolves, although I'm decidedly pro-obiri and pro-lupine. :)
I read fantasy almost exclusively--the darker the better! I became addicted to fantasy after reading Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy. My current favorites are Pat Rothfuss, Peter V. Brett, Brent Weeks and Mark Lawrence.
I know there's so much left to explore in this genre and I appreciate any and all recommendations!

It would have to be Lord of the rings. I know thats what so many people say but so far I havn't found anything to match it :)

I tried to read The Lord of the Rings but never really got comfortable with the books, maybe too much detail; I also tried Wheel of Time and read the first five books and then lost interest after he didn't publish a book for over one year and I forgot about the relationships of all the characters; so I am still looking for the right fantasy book; I really like the Shanara series by Terry Brooks, so I will keep on looking.

been reading fantasy books since my d&d dabbles in the late 80's and introduction to the dragonlance series.
Currently reading A Game of Thrones after a break from fantasy. But got a few more on my kindle wishlist

My recent favorites are;
Joe Abercrombie
Patrick Rothfuss
Brandon Sanderson
Michael J Sullivan
David Dalglish
Brent Weeks
Tolkien
George RR. Martin
Robert Jordan
Peter V. Brett...
ugh there are to many. I'll stop there

Where in Norway did you live?"
Sorry for the late reply, I was out for Thanksgiving. I lived in Kvinesdal, which is about an hour or so North of Kristiansand.

Favorite authors? Too many and depending on mood, I like most fantasy, though lately the gritty ones have been my favorite, I love Urban fantasy, but not paranormal romance so much, so Butcher is real high on my list. It is sacrilege, but as a kid I liked Tolkien, but as a an adult, I find him to be stuffy and boring. I read 3 - 6 books per week and I do reread many series over and over (Brust for sure, Martin, and many others)

After spending a few days dancing around this group, I’ve decided to join at the recommendation of Jim, one of my Goodreads friends.
A bit about my reading interests… I enjoy traveling into books set in real life or close to real life settings with bits of fantasy thrown in. I want to be able to clearly picture and understand the magical world (e.g. Harry Potter set in Britain with a magical alternate universe still easily mirrored with real-life and sprinkled with magic) rather than being confused by character names and places I can't pronounce (e.g. the setting in Eragon) with creatures that have no reference in my mind (not able to think of an example for this off the top of my head).
A few of my favorites, which I'd categorize in the fantasy realm, include:
- Harry Potter series by J K Rowling
- Mortal Instrument series by Cassandra Clare
- A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness
- The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
- The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis
I want to eventually tackel the very large, but I'm told amazing:
- The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley
- The Great Book of Amber by Roger Zelanzy
- The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
I look forward to interacting with group members, sharing reads, and adding more books to my ever-growing TBR and wist lists.

My name is Jonathan, originally from New York but attending law school out of the state.
I recently joined Goodreads on the recommendation of another fantasy aficionado, and I am truly enjoying the breadth of knowledge the website has to offer.
I have been reading Fantasy since the age of 13, when I noticed a classmate reading "Eye of the World." I have been hooked ever since. While my list of favorite authors continues to grow! Currently, my list includes: Robin Hobb, Robert Jordan, J.V. Jones, Brandon Sanderson, David Anthony Durham (just finished Acacia), Rothfuss, Tad Williams etc...
Currently, I am reading "Gardens of the Moon" (my second attempt- I got through about 160 pages 5 or 6 years ago). I am really enjoying the book so far (two chapters in), and knowing that I am going to be confused for the first 250 pages or so has really helped me this time around. I am hoping my law school finals do not prevent me from making significant progress in the book! Anyone else reading Gardens? If so, I would love to start a discussion on the book. I noticed several discussions in this group, as well as the Series sister group, but it seems that most have already moved onto the other books in the series.
I hope to add to the already interesting and thoughtful discussions found in this group!
Regards,
Jonathan

I have read Gardens of the Moon twice now. Also Deadhouse Gates and Memories of Ice. I have gotten to Reaper's Gale but...I got a little confused again. So I'm taking a break, I think my mind rebelled, and will pick the series back up again starting with Bonehunters.
I haven't looked at the sister group's discussions much because they're ahead of me but feel free to use one of the discussions here. It'll get a discussion going again. Alot of people here are reading them.

My name is Kamilah and I am from Chicago, IL.
I love reading and listening to books. I just returned to reading because I recently changed employers - I was able to listen to audio books while working. Not able to do that in my current position. Man was I spoiled! I had to do all that hard work to read like turning the pages and moving my eyes to know what was happening in the story. But I have grown accustomed to regular reading again.
I have been an avid reader from a young age but didn't really get into the fantasy genre until Rowling's Harry Potter books. I like to read series because I hate when good books end.
I wanted to join the group because everyone sees/reads/understands stories in a different light/perspective , and there are so many ways to look at and learn things from a diverse group of people.
Some of my favorite authors are: George R.R. Martin, Diana Gabaldon, Robin Hobb, Jim Butcher, Brent Weeks, Lian Hearn, and J.K. Rowlings to name a few.
I just really want to read good - hopefully great books, and have some interesting discussions about them.

I'm Louise, I was a journalist for 20 years but gave it all up to be a stay at home mum when my son James was born three years ago.
I've always loved fantasy from the original Arthurian legends, Irish and Welsh myth, Norse, Greek and Roman etc and then onto more traditional fantasy.
Favourite authors include Raymond E Feist, David Eddings, David Gemmell, Tolkien, George R R Martin, Terry Pratchett, Trudy Canavan, Robin Hobb and all the other usual suspects.
Not so keen on sci-fi but I enjoy Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series as well as some Philip K Dick and I've read all the Dune books.
I live in Yorkshire, England, and I also love music, film, theatre, ballet, singing, acting, walking and travel.

I'm Tim, 21 years old, born and raised in the most beautiful country in the world. You know, that country they call The Netherlands. Yeah, that one! I loved readings books when I was a kid, but I had other priorities in high school: Gaming, drinking beer, watching TV, etc etc. A few years back I rediscovered the fun of reading and I've bought around 30 books since then. Mostly fantasy and SciFi books, with a few exceptions (some science and fiction books). I still love other things like gaming, watching a lot of series and hanging out with friends, so I don't read very much. I've started A Storm of Swords in December 2010 and I'm still at page 320 or so... I did read a few other books in the meantime, though. I'm still discovering the world of Fantasy books and I find more and more books that I want to read everyday, but I don't think I will have time to read them all.
Series that I will definitely want to finish are The Wheel of Time, Sword of Truth, A Song of Ice and Fire, all books of Robin Hobb and Raymond E. Feist and, ofcourse, Discworld.
I already spent a few hours just reading discussions in this group, and I must admit that I love this group already!
If you have any recommendations on books I should definitely read, don't hesitate to recommend them!
Tim

I'm Michelle and I'm a book lover and independent fantasy writer from cold, cold Denmark!
I pretty much love almost anything with angels or demons in it(Not so fond of vampires and werewolves anymore, since Twillight started the trend with making them sparkly and cuddly).
The reason I got into fantasy when I was younger was the Harry Potter books, which I must have read 6-7 times by now.
I love it for the uniqueness and great characters, which fiction really needs these days.
For me, a good fantasy needs: A strong main character, magical creatures, mystery or action(Preferably both) and at least one more or less insane person.
I'm currently working on the second book of a fantasy series, and I'm searching for great new books to inspire me to write!
Hope to meet some great people here!

Um, Michael, you need to read the thread on self promotion. Please don't post the title of your book in your posts.

air-conditioning. He delights in reading fantasy fiction, the guilty pleasure of Japanese
animation, and camping like a dastardly craven in MW3 S&D. Huxley believes that literature to be the most valuable hoard that humanity has gathered in its quest to understand itself.
Huxley is an incoming apprentice in law school. He chose to pursue the legal profession partly because of the digressing sociopolitical environment in his nation, the worsening corruption that has engulfed the right of every citizen to good governance, freedom, decent life, and more importantly his or her dignity and Huxley feels it is up to him to lubricate the sluggish wheels of justice, and partly because he doesn't want to work right away.

Hi Everyone, I am a writer and reader of Fantasy and horror with a splash of Science Fiction. I thought to say hello from North Queensland, Australia. I have a thing for high and epic fantasy, such as J.R.R. Tolkien I believe to be the godfather of the genre who I follow every year. Of course I know there are others before he came on the scene but I like the world building of Middle Earth. Others authors I follow is a few Australian and New Zealand authors such as Glenda Larke, Kim Falconer, Karen Miller, Russell Kirkpatrick and many more. More like Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson, Katherine Kerr and there is too many to add here. Well that it is enough from me. Oh my name is Robert. Cheers.

Danni here, a Swede living in California. I read most everything that comes my way, but I especially like fantasy books with some element of magic in them. I have a very active imagination (or maybe I am just a daydreamer) and I love staying in the fantasy worlds I read about long after I finished the book.

My name is Lisa. This is my first time joining a group for any reason. I love books more than just about anything, and this website/group seems very interesting, so I am giving it a go. I live in Northern Arizona (near Flagstaff), where it is currently freezing cold and snow is falling! I have been reading fantasy books since I can remember. The first series I ever read was the entire Wizard of Oz collection, and later, Lord of the Rings. I am currently reading Lyonesse Suldrun's Garden, Book of Kells, and The Blade Itself. I am also re-reading Mists of Avalon. I tend to read several books at a time, especially since I I bought a Kindle a few years ago. Looking forward to good conversation, and some recommendations for new books...

I'm D.G. and I'm new to the genre. It's all Pat Rothfuss' fault! I read The Name of the Wind last year and fell in love with the genre. However, as I read lots of different things (if it's good, I'll try it), I know I have lots of good fantasy books to discover. I'm really looking forward to some good recs. :)
