Brandon wrote: "I know really! I couldn't do that. I prefer focusing on one book at at time. Maybe even two but ten? No..."
I am not sure how I can do it, but I easily switch between books. Some of them are slower reads for me that I would probably abandon if I didn't read at the same time as my quicker reads (and boy would I miss out on some good books if I did that!). I like finishing books, but I read at different paces depending on what's comfortable and best for retaining what I've read.

I'm currently reading The Lies of Locke Lamora, which is just beginning to get interesting. I recently finished the last of Brandon Sanderson's books, and eagerly looking forward to his newest next week; I really love all of his work and it really opened my eyes to what enjoying a book was about. Now I'm afraid that I'll struggle to find books as interesting as his.
I also enjoy Robin Hood and King Arthur stories, and have begun to make a little progress on those topics.
And when I'm not reading I work as a land surveyor, finishing my civil engineering degree part-time, enjoy geocaching, genealogy, and gaming. I live in New Zealand with my husband and cat.

Hi Jen! Welcome to the group. I wonder if you might be the poster child for what a busy person looks like. :)
Michael

Alloy of Law? it is already out, i saw it in the bookstore.

Just a quick intro because I'm not great at randomly scribbling on threads. I recently came abroad to Miami from South Africa to carry on studying. I have been hooked on reading fantasy since I struggled through Lord of the Rings when I was 13. Still love reading although I have broadened my reading preferences but always come back to fantasy because it is a great escape from everything.
Big Tolkien fan (since he is originally from SA) and always get wrapped up in David Gemmel books. More recently Brent Weeks has had me hooked.
I have tried to write a couple of times but run out of motivation to keep going. Posted some recent unfinished scripts on my profile and inspiring comments would be welcome!
A little longer than I planned but I am trying to put studying for as long as possible.
Cheers

From horses I moved onto anything and everything I can get my hands on. I still enjoy reading a wide range of genres. My first adventure in fantasy was The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne. I loved it. I combed the school libraries for more Jules Verne. Then I moved onto the Dune series by Frank Herbert and then tons of books by Piers Anthony, and I was hooked.
I actually became a writer thanks to reading James Herriot, although at first I wanted to be a writing veterinarian. I settled for journalism and began a sports writer. Currently, I have just released my own fantasy novel and look forward to writing even more.
Some of my favorite fantasy authors in no particular order are:
Robert Jordan
Melanie Rawn
Tad Williams
Morgan Llwelyn
Terry Goodkind
Angus Wells
Mary Stewart
Mercedes Lackey

You listed Terry Goodkind, I have recently read the first three of the Sword of Truth Series. But I am hesitant to continue with the series because, for me at least, the series began to slow down a bit due to the saturation of sub-plots and story lines I felt like the story was struggling to retain organization. How did you feel the rest of the series was? Should I continue?
PS: It has been a long time goal of mine to right a fantasy novel, how long did it take you to write your first one?

I'm an avid reader, and aspiring author, looking forward to getting my first novel out in December, once cover art and last tier edits had completed.
Hm. What else might be said? Professionally, I'm a journalist and photographer. I'm always open to making new acquaintances and getting new recommendations for reading. Plus, I don't bite. Usually. I think.
Cheers.

Chris, congratulations on your first novel! I looked at your website and I must commend you on the map! There is nothing I enjoy more than a good fantasy novel that has a map!!

Hi Gage! You likie many stories I like. I loved the Inheritance Cyle books and am thrilled to read the last one. Those books are my most favorite dragon stories. I thought the best character was his mentor, so sad when he died.

I also loved the Hunger Games too. You would like the Tales of the Otori Book one "Across the Nightingale Floor" Book 2 "Grass for his Pillow" Book 3"Brillance of the Moon" Book 4 " The Harsh Cry of Huron" and Book 5 "Heaven's Net is Wide" (which is actually the beginning ofthe story). These books are rich, elegantly written ,and a tapaastery woven with detailed Japanesse culture and fightling!!!! A must read.

Terry Goodwind is the Boom!!

Thank you! And I'm glad you enjoyed the map - I think it's a good point for any fantasy work to bring into its fold, to help better immerse its readers in the world being crafted.

I really enjoyed the rest of the series. It did get a little bogged down at times in some of the side plots, but the action and the main story line always pulled me through to the end.
Writing my book was a long road actually. I wrote it in about six months and then put it away for years before I finally dusted it off and decided the only way I was ever going to move forward was to just take the leap! Once I was back in the writing mode it took me about three months of editing before I finally sent it out into the big, bad reading world.
Lucky for me I've had a ton of family support (actually more like nagging for me to get it published) but so far it's been a thrilling experience!
I hope you at least give writing a try. Just take it one word at a time.

Thanks for the recommendations! I will be looking them up, although, like you, they will be on the back burner untill I finish the fourth and final Inheritance novel!

I almost NEVER begin a series that I don't see through to the end, so I most likely will be picking up my trail with the Sword of Truth soon enough!
And thank you for the advice!

I know the feeling no matter how hard it gets sometimes, I have to know the end. Sometimes, I wish I could just stop it might make my life easier.

Watched the mini-series of Hogfather the other day, by the way. Have you seen any of the Discworld adaptations?

I'm Anna-Louise and i live in Hampshire in the UK and ive been loving fantasy since i can remember. I've been stuck in my Terry Pratchett ways for years reading the back catalogue and now I'm up to date, so I'm looking to branch out now into other fantasy. I'm glad i found this group and looking forward to finding recommendations here and reading the discussions :-)

Oh yeah, I love those adaptations. They did a really good job! I think Terry Pratchett's work is not only hilarious, it is very well written and logical in an illogical sort of way!

Calvin, I'll admit I've only read two of Pratchett's novels, and it was quite a while ago (they were [Book: Equal Rites] and [Book: Interesting Times]), but I got a huge kick out of the Hogfather mini-series, and it made me want to read more. Too bad my "to read" list is about six miles long at the moment...

I just got started with goodreads groups, though I've been posting my books and book reviews here for a bit over a year now...
Hope to keep on top of the discussion; there's a lot of traffic here!
Anyway, I'm Althea, I'm from NYC, I'm a librarian/archivist, but I work in a photo library, not with books! I read a lot, and fantasy (especially if we go with a liberal definition of 'fantasy') is my favorite genre.

I am a fantasy author living in Brisbane, Queensland and am relatively new to goodreads. I am an avid reader, although have spent most of my time writing my novels rather than reading lately.
My second book is about to be released shortly (next installment in my epic saga), which is exciting news :)
I tend to read fantasy novels, self improvement books, and anything else that takes my fancy.
My biggest influence would be Robin Hobbs and the Liveship Traders series in particular. I know, she's pretty much become a fantasy cliche, but she was my first LOL
I love to make new contacts, so feel free to link up with me.

Hey, cliche or no, it's the substance and the quality that matters, and she's certainly a great example of both in the fantasy world.
Well, from one fantasy lover to another, it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Welcome to the group - and congrats on the upcoming release.
Welcome, Peter. I too like to read fantasy though I enjoy reading in other genres too and ofter rotate them. I haven't read a self-improvement book in a while, but I do like Psychology Today magazine.

A little about myself. I am a wife and mother of five kids. My favorite author since I was a pre teen has always been Stephen King. I have come to really enjoy some books by authors that are listed on here. Some of which I would never have heard about where I live. Most due to this site.

Thanks Chris, This is true... I am quite the fan of Robin Hobb's work. I hope you add me as a friend and I will check out your work :)

Thanks for the warm welcome Maurice :)

I am a HUGE Robert Jordan fan. Like, seriously, I can ace pretty much any WoT trivia. Hence, I'm also a big Brandon Sanderson fan. I'm also really into Tolkien (obviously) Naomi Novik, Susanna Clarke, Neil Gaiman, J.K. Rowling...many others I'm just drawing a blank right now.
Anyway I'm looking to discover new authors because the last three or four fantasy books I've read I've really disliked and I'm starting to get disillusioned with the genre.

It'd be my pleasure, Peter. And again - welcome.

I'm from Kolkata, India.
I'm an Electronics a communication engineering graduate and looking forward to my Master's degree and PHD in my major. Though i'm a technical person, m a writer and poet too.
I love reading novels especially fantasy, Dystopic, Romance, classics and some time non fictions.
My most favorite books are The Alchemist, Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyer, Picture of Dorian Gray, Ivanhoe, Poems of Rabindranath Tagore, Percy Bysshe Shelley and William Wordsworth. From modern day creation i love The Hunger games , The Iron Fey and The Harry Potter series. I'm just into books (of course other than my study books :)) Currently i'm writing my own dystopia novel. wish me luck friends :)

So what are those last books You read, may i know the names?

James, welcome! I also enjoyed Robert Jordan immensely. I do know what you mean as I have also struggled to find fantasy novels that I enjoy reading these days. I am trying very hard not to self-promote, but you can check out my stuff if you want, it may be up your alley. My website (click my name to view my author page if you're interested) has free previews of my published book and of my upcoming book due to be released in the next few weeks.
