Michael McClung (michaelmcclung) Hi Eden! lots of leads on new fantasy titles for you around here!

message 1552: by Eden (new)

Eden Daintree (eden_daintree) Yeah, definitely! I went through the books you guys have already read as a group, and I didn't even recognise most of them! I'm excited to see if my local libraries have any of them. I am a little restricted in what I can read, as I don't make enough money to buy books whenever I feel like it, so I'm pretty much stuck to what the libraries have. But hopefully they'll have some of what you guys have been reading, so I can expand my internal bookshelves.

message 1553: by Michael (new)

Michael McClung (michaelmcclung) Two words: interlibrary loan :D

Eden Daintree (eden_daintree) Hmm, I'm not sure how libraries in the US work, I wonder if it's different to here? In Australia, our suburbs are set into council zones, and there are multiple libraries in those council zones. For example, in the Playford council where I live, there's the Munno Para library and the Elizabeth library. These libraries have one joined catalogue and books can be transferred in between them, but not to libraries in other councils. My city is pretty small so it's not hard for me to get to other libraries outside my council, but from my experience, the collections in the libraries in my state aren't very... eclectic. XD

message 1556: by Michael (new)

Michael McClung (michaelmcclung) Wow, that's really limiting. Maybe you could join a university library near you? In the US at least the general public can become a member of a university library for a small fee, and that really opens up what's available.

message 1557: by Eden (new)

Eden Daintree (eden_daintree) Haha... Our universities don't have their own libraries. There are two universities in the CBD, and the students just use the city public library, which is mostly non-fiction and reference stuff. I dunno, I love my city, but I guess it really isn't great when it comes to libraries. It also doesn't help that Amazon doesn't ship to Australia without charging a jillion dollars for it!

message 1558: by R.L. (new)

R.L. Austin Eden, have you thought of downloading Kindle for PC to your computer? It's free, and there are thousands of free books you can download and read. You probably will not find the books discussed here for free, but there are still lots to choose from. Just a suggestion.

message 1559: by Michael (new)

Michael McClung (michaelmcclung) Oh, my. This is all I got left for ya :D

Eden Daintree (eden_daintree) I have an iPhone and I use Stanza on that, with Calibre on my computer. I am aware that this gives me access to a plethora of torrents for books, however I can't help but feel awful when I do that. There are a lot of classics for free on Stanza, which definitely is awesome (and I do want to work my way through a lot of the classics eventually), but like you said, it doesn't have a lot of awesomely magical fantasy stuff.

Also, eBooks just aren't the same as real books! I know it's silly, but to me, the smell and feel of a book is just as important as the words written in it.

Eden - look up The Galaxy Bookshop - superb SF/Fantasy specialty store down under. ;) They'll ship.

OH MY GOLLY! They ship for free if you buy six books or more! o0o0o0o0o! Now I just have to save up enough money to buy six books, haha. Thanks so much for that though, it's such an awesome looking store and I can't wait to try it out when I have sufficient funds :D

message 1566: by Eden (new)

Eden Daintree (eden_daintree) What exactly is "urban" fantasy? This term is new to me.

message 1567: by Michael (new)

Michael McClung (michaelmcclung) Well, I'm sure the term is open to debate, and there are lots of flavours, but generally speaking I think of urban fantasy simply as fantasy stories set generally in a modern rather than a medieval setting. I'd call Jim Butcher's Dresden Files urban fantasy- most of the action happens in modern day Chicago.

This doesn't cover all the possibilities, but it's a good quick and dirty definition.

Charles (charliewhip) | 223 comments Dear Eden, Michael, Jacki, RL Welcome to the Club. We have lots of fun and explore the joys of fantasy books. I am a "phantom mod" because I'm out of town most of the time, but I do love the club.

Well, that doesn't sound fun at all! Each to their own, I suppose, but that really doesn't sound like it would float my boat. That would probably include stuff like Twilight, then? I burnt my Twilight books after I read them.

Eden, I tend to agree. I am very much into Medieval, including SCA membership and PennsicWars every year. I certainly support everyone's right to read what they like, including Twilight, but it's not my thing, either.

N.r. Searcy My name's Nick, from Alabama, and my favorite authors are: R.A. Salvatore, David Gemmell, Terry Goodkind, and Robert Jordan (at least up until the last few books in Wheel of Time). I generally only read fantasy, but I will venture into Science Fiction or Mystery from time to time.

I'm not sure what else to say other than that I hope to enjoy the conversations in this group.

Celeste Simone (celestesimone) Hello! My name is Celeste, I live in New England, where I enjoy hiking in the green mountains and connecting with nature. I am a self-published fantasy author because I loved reading fantasy so much I started envisioning a fantasy world of my own! My personal favorite books range from classics to currents. But since I think all of them have been mentioned already, I'll just mention one of my ultimate favorites, though lesser known books: The Book of Flying

Feel free to friend me if you like, who doesn't like friends? Thanks!

message 1578: by Scott (new)

Scott Bury (scottbury) | 16 comments Hello. I'm Scott and I've been a reader of fantasy since I read a chapter of The Hobbit in my grade 5 reader—about a century ago! I've read Tolkein and Lewis and a lot of other fantasy and SF, but lately I find it a little repetitive and I'm looking for stuff that's a little different.

I like Guy Gavriel Kay's work, and if you accept his argument that magical realism is the same as fantasy, then I highly recommend Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude.

I realize that I'm a latecomer to this large and very active group, but I look forward to others' comments.

Just for full disclosure, I am also an aspiring novelist—I have finished a novel that would fit into what I like to call "historical fantasy," but I don't want to try to promote it in this forum (rules is rules).

Looking forward to trading comments with you all!

I am new to goodreads (still trying to figure it out)
and I am a published author.
Currently reading the last Harry Potter book (from the library) - because I saw the movie and wanted to fill in parts. It is a very thick book. I have to keep renewing it. Hope to have it finished by Labor day. Don't want to pay a lot of past due fees!

Eli | 20 comments Hello Everyone! My name is Elizabeth and I live in Mexico City.

My first fantasy book was Peter Pan, I read it when I was 5 years old, and since then I've been a big fan of the genre, but sadly, here in Mexico we only get very Popular books, like Harry Potter, J.R.R. Tolkien books and alike, so it happens to me very often that I want to read a book but I can't get it here, or if happen to get it, nobody knows about it.
I've read the past two month readings and I absolutely adore them! I hope to be around here much more and meet a lot of people that like fantasy books!

John Beachem | 373 comments Welcome Travis, Sean and Elizabeth. Geez. I cannot BELIEVE how fast this group grows. Anyway, hope all three of you find some new recommendations here. Let us know if we can point you toward anything in particular.

Hey, all. My name is Elisa and I live in good ol' Texas. Started reading fantasy when I was really young and have been obsessed ever since. My first fantasy novel was The Hobbit, as we read it in middle school. But soon I gobbled up Robin McKinley's The Blue Sword, which was quickly followed up by all of Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern novels, which also got me into science fiction.

I hope to make a lot of good reading buddies here as well as get great insight on what is considered good fantasy -- I feel a little lost sometimes when I just go to Borders (well, Barnes & Noble now, I guess) and there's so many fantasy books that look similar or the same.

message 1588: by Trisha (new)

Trisha Williams Hi. I am Trisha. To say that "I like to read a lot" is an understatement. When I run out of something to read I make up stories. I like fantasy best but I'll read anything. currently reading "The Shack" by Wm. Paul Young. I just finished "Dead Reckoning" by Charlaine Harris. I just made a trip to the Library so I am all set for this next week.

I live in East Texas with all the ghosts of characters from stories that died before they were ever completed or published... They Haunt me and taunt me, because of my inability to turn them loose on the world. I'm sure this may sound crazy to some but if you're a writer and have a story sitting in a very dusty file folder then you know what I mean. My grammar skills are atrocious though, and some book or other story idea comes along before I can get anything finished.

My next reading project is George R R Martin. had no clue who he was until I noticed that he has 3 books on the BestSeller's list. I must have been living under a rock.

BTW; For those who haven't read "Dead Reckoning" yet... There will be another book after this. She's not done yet.

Welcome, Trisha! I feel the same about GRRM. When I finally sat down and read Game of Thrones, I couldn't believe that something this amazing had been hiding from me for so long!

Yeah, my husband just goes off to the photography section until I decide to give up and find him, haha. I'm surprised he even comes along sometimes.

Trisha said: I live in East Texas... My next reading project is George R R Martin. had no clue who he was until I noticed that he has 3 books on the BestSeller's list. I must have been living under a rock.

Hi Trisha! I'm new here, too, and from Southeast Texas. Where are you at? Also, I just started reading Martin's A Game of Thrones. I only knew about it because I saw the HBO series and finally realized that that was the A Song of Ice and Fire series everyone of my fantasy friends always gabbed. So you've got company under that rock, haha.

Also, the library is like heaven for me, though I am still very attached to print books. Amazon is where I buy stuff I know I'll like, but really, I love a physical bookstore.

I live in Cypress, just outside of Houston. The library is my haven. I am on oxygen so its hard for to go out and do but a humongous library is just two miles away and I have a jazzy that can get me there... when I sneak off they always come look for me at the library but its so big that I can hide for hours before they drag me out.

Hi, I'm Helen and I live in North England, although I'm from Wales. I'm a teacher and return to the new school year Monday.

My first foray into Fantasy was Sword of Shannara and I've been hooked for 28 years! I have many favourite authors: Brooks, Eddings, Feist, Wurts, Hobb etc and am always discovering more. I did think I was well-read in the genre until I read the top 100 list!

I look forward to reading with you.

Melissa (lostunicorn) Thought I'd pop in and say hi. Hi. Ummm....there should probably be more to this, right? Well, let's see. I figure you already know I like to read since I am on Goodreads and that I like Fantasy since I joined this group. So what's left to tell?

I recently read The Warded Man and loved it. I am a fan of Terry Brooks, David Eddings, Tolkien, MZB, Anne McCaffrey, Brandon Sanderson, and (yes, I'll admit it) Piers Anthony. Fairly new to my author lists are Robin Hobb, Mercedes Lackey, David Farland, and Kate Forsyth.

I'll leave it there for now. Happy reading to all!

message 1599: by Emelie (new)

Emelie Hi!

I'm Emelie, a 22 year old from Sweden.

My interest for fantasy started when I as a child started to read The Lord of the Rings. I was captivated by the different world, cultures, and wars. I started to read other Tolkien and some Hobb books.

Then I got Harry Potter and my fascination for the genre grew bigger. I started to write fantasy stories and to roleplay.

During my later teens my interested swaggered and it isn't until now I'm getting the fascination back and the wish to jump into this world again and discover all the books I've missed.

Just wondering: did you continue to write after your interest in fantasy went on hiatus?
