Ali (angeluz) Hi everyone!

I'm Ali, just turned 28 and trying my best to stay young still =). I'm from Atlanta, GA / U.S, but ethnically my family is Persian so that's a bit of an odd mix. I'm also a writer--love to read, write, breathe fantasy--and an author the 'Acadia' series.

My first fantasy novel was the Hobbit, which started the whole "ooo I like dragons!!" phase during middle school. But I'm also fond of the classics like Jane Austen or Fitzgerald to Michael Crichton.

Trying now to start the The Game of Thrones while finish the second part to my series (I usually try to avoid any reading while writing but the HBO series has got me hooked!).

Well that's my intro in a nutshell; plus I see that there's some great recommendations already discussed here.

Thanks,

Ali

Eowyn Hi all, I'm fantasy lover from Zagreb, Croatia. I don't have much time for reading, having two small childern, but I do like a good book. Though I prefer fantasy as genre, I hold a special place for Jane Austen and for many other classics.

Ahmad (theluggage) Hi!
I'm Ahmad. I will be 21 on the 21st of this month :) I'm an amateur writer, I write poetry mostly, have been toying with fantasy and meta-fiction for some time now and when I am not reading/writing, I am usually programming :)

I just stumbled upon (notice the difference from stumbledupon) this group while browsing the site. I joined this site recently, have no friends here and am still playing around, acquainting myself with it and all:)

I love reading...to the extent that I rarely go out anymore. I usually manage three to four books per week, so one can probably label me as a fast reader. My attitude towards reading is 'anything goes as long as it's good prose' :)

I don't recall a time when I was not reading. So it is real hard to decide which book was my first. Probably Treasure Island or any of Jules Verne.

Well, thats it about me, mostly :)

message 1457: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 14 comments Hello Everyone! My name is Lisa. Fantasy is my favorite genre, though I also enjoy historical fiction too. The ultimate for me is when both genres are mixed together - what a treat! I began my love of fantasy with Stephen King, J R R Tolkien and Marion Zimmer Bradley to name a few. I've been enjoying finding other great books to read through the posts in this group. Thanks!

message 1458: by Jaya (new)

Jaya Hi! I'm Jaya and I just joined Goodreads. I've always been a huge fan of fantasy books ever since I read the Harry Potter series. Its practically the only genre I read. Up until now, I've been reading most YA novels, but I would really like to find new books and thought this group would be a great place to start!

I don't think it's in very good taste but understandable.

message 1460: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Joel wrote: "Thanks Sandra because even some top authors have rated their books five stars."

Well that's just my personal opinion. I know C.J. Cherryh rates hers 5 stars and mostly I agree with her, so it doesn't bother me in her case. To each his own. Each fan will draw his/her own conclusions, I guess.

message 1461: by Kate (new)

Kate Hi there! I'm Kate and I'm from Pennsylvania. I normally read science fiction and fantasy books. Right now I'm rereading George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire just to get ready for the next book coming out. I also am a fan of Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. I also read a lot of Star Wars books, they were the first science fiction I got into.

I'll also ready murder mysteries and historical fiction and non-fiction. I'm a big fan of Erik Larson's books. I just love the way he writes.

My favorite show is Fringe. Though I really love LOST, Alias, Battlestar Galactica, and Psych as well.

message 1462: by Kate (new)

Kate (milakate) | 2 comments Hi Kate! I'm Kate from Utah. :) I love science fiction and fantasy as well and have not yet gotten to reading the George R. R. Martin books - I really need to get to them though! Welcome to the group. Historical fiction and non-fiction science books are also some of my favorites. :)

message 1463: by Ahmad (new)

Ahmad (theluggage) Hi Kate and Kate :)
And everyone else too..

My younger brother bought some books of A Song of Ice and Fire some time ago. I still haven't brought myself to read 'em...But hopefully I will soon enough.

Elaina Lol, wow, what a big thread XD Anyway, hey there, my name is Elaina *waves* and I am an aspiring author of an epic fantasy book (I'm currently looking for betas and editors for my manuscript so I can send out to agents and publishers). I feel very passionate about the fantasy genre because it can be taken in almost endless directions. I wanted to join this community to interact with people who feel the same way =]

message 1465: by [deleted user] (new)

I just stumbled upon this group while googling information about the newest Wheel of Time book. Awesome! My name is Mary, and I'm from southern California. The Wheel of Time series is my favorite, obviously, and I also love Sanderson's other books, especially the mistborn series. I'm really excited to gush with people over WoT since none of my irl friends have read the whole series. *sigh*

I'm about to start reading A Song of Ice and Fire. I'm jumping on the bandwagon a bit, I know, but I hear it's an awesome series!

I also love everything Terry Pratchett's ever done, and Neil Gaiman ain't too shabby, either.

message 1467: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi! I just joined this group today and wanted to introduce myself! I don't know a single other person in real life who reads fantasy, so I'm very excited to be here! I started reading fantasy when I was a kid, but didn't really recognize it as such and thus didn't make the leap to adult fantasy until much later. So I'm kind of a newbie. I'm also kind of picky, but don't know enough yet to be able to categorize what I like. Some of the authors I very much like include:

George R.R. Martin
Robin Hobbs
Brandon Sanderson
Guy Gavriel Kay
Patrick Rothfuss

I also read a lot of YA fantasy/scifi/paranormal, mainly because I like sharing books with my 12yo daughter!

I'm really looking forward to being a part of this group!

Annette (annie3109) Hi, my name is Annette. I live in reality everyday so I love anything that takes me out of it. I like fast action, page turning, thrillers. Romance or dystopian, adult or young adult. I really like to find a good series that's complete or near complete so I can read a bunch of books in a row. Some of my favs are JR Ward, Kresley Cole, Scott Westerfeld, Karen Marie Moning, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Hunger Games, Maze Runner, PC Cast, you get the picture. I am hoping someone can tell me where I can find cheap ebooks for my nook. B&N gets expensive when you are getting a couple books a week and can't use the coupons. Our library doesn't have ebooks. Any suggestions?

Try inkmesh.com. That site allows you to search for free ebooks by the type of reader you have (Nook, Kindle, etc). It will also try to find the lowest price on non-free books on various sites.

message 1481: by Jefferson (new)

Jefferson Smith (jeffersonsmith) My name is Jefferson Smith. I've been reading both SF and F for what seems like 30 years. (Oh, wait, it HAS been 30 years. :-) I'm a computer scientist who does research into how to help people be more creative when they use software, and I am also a published published fantasy author. (Fun fact: I used to work in Hollywood as a computer graphics special effects consultant.)

I'm joining a few online groups like this for several reasons: First, I live in a relatively small city, and I want to stay in touch with what people are reading elsewhere. Second, I want to find opportunities to engage with people about where fantasy fiction is going, and what kinds of new ground would be worth exploring. And yes, I would like it if people found my contributions interesting enough that they became curious about reading my work, but I'm not here to spam anybody. (I actually wrote a book about the evils of advertising, so it would be hypocritical of me to employ such tactics myself. :-)

Anyway, my favorite SF authors are Heinlein, Bester and Card, but I fear that the SF genre is foundering and lost. It's been a few years now since I've found anything there to excite me.

As for fantasy, my current faves are GRRM, Robin Hobb, and Tamora Pierce. (Although I should warn those who might care that my own writing style is nothing like any of these folks.)

I look forward to mixing it up with all the well-read and opinionated folks I'm seeing around the boards here.

message 1482: by Trever (last edited Jul 08, 2011 11:24AM) (new)

Trever Wise (twise) I just started reading fantasy 5 or 6 years ago. I got hooked on the "Wheel Of Time" series and have never looked back. I have always enjoyed the genre in films and never really had time to read. I read some books, but mostly I am hooked on audio books. I have about two and a half hours of commute time each day and have filled this time with books. Audio books have allowed me to enjoy some wonderful books I would have never found time to read. I will list my 5 favorite authors below and leave it at that for now. Looking forward to some insights and some good reccomendations from all of you here.

1. Robert Jordan - Wheel Of Time
2. Brandon Sanderson - Mistborn, WoT, Way Of Kings
3. George RR Martin - Ice and Fire
4. Terry Goodkind - Sword Of Truth
5. David Eddings - The Belgariad and The Malloreon*

*I have to say Mandorallen is one of my favorite characters of all time...

message 1483: by Roc (new)

Roc (roc1138) | 5 comments Hi, my name is Roc and I've been reading Fantasy and Science Fiction for the past 20 or so years. Currently I'm rereading the Wheel of Time series before the last comes out, on The Dragon Reborn now. It was shortly after the first few books came out when I caught up with the releases and stopped reading. Also just read my first Forgotten Realms book by R A Salvatore and reading Streams of Silver now.
Well, other then that I see many more books in the discussion I need to read so I won't ask for any suggestions yet.

Hi!

I grew up reading fantasy and science fiction, playing RPGs, and basically in love with the language arts. Some of my favorite fantasy novelists are: JRR Tolkien, Ursula K. LeGuin, James Branch Cabell, E.R. Eddison, and Michael Moorcock.

I'm looking forward to discussing some of the books and reading some new material, since I've been a bit disconnected from the fantasy genre for the past 15 years.

G'day all,
I'm Melanie from Aus
Im a book nut as Im sure most of you are.
I started out with fantasy and branched off a bit...now ready to come home:D

I grew up with the Hobbit and my father reading me Michael Moorcock.

I'm sick of vampires, werewolves and fairies.
Give elves, assassins and dragons any day.

I prefer dark fantasy, and am looking forward to talking to you all :D

Find my page on facebook Melanie. I work with a lot of authors and I'm sure I can assist you in finding some good series or novella in any genre. I would post links on here but it may be taken as spam. Look for Kevin C. Davison (Author).

message 1489: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Baxter (smallblondehippy) Hello all!
My name is Liz and I hail from Derbyshire in the UK. I've been reading fantasy since 5 years of age. I can't say what really attracts me to fantasy but it's been a lifelong passion. In fact, I rarely read anything else. Perhaps I find the real world a bit boring. As a child I fell in love with the Chronicles of Narnia and The Wind in the Willows but more recently I've really enjoyed the work of Steven Erikson. I find that a lot of fantasy these days is too formulaic but Erickson's work is refreshingly different whilst still retaining the epic elements that I love. Anyway, that's me. Nice to meet you all.

message 1490: by Lily (new)

Lily (lilsybird) Hello everyone!
My name is Lily, I'm a 23 year old Oregon native, I live with my husband and our three cats on a small country farm. I grew up reading fantasy of all kinds for all ages, and recently I've come to find that there are a lot of fantasy avenues I haven't yet explored.
At the moment I'm very interested in the writing of George Martin, Brandon Sanderson, and Neil Gaiman. At other times, many others. :)
I decided to join this group since Ursula LeGuin and Brent Weeks are both on my "To-read" list already and I loved the idea of being able to discuss them. I look forward to getting to know some of you better!

message 1491: by Jolea (new)

Jolea Harrison (joleamharrison) Hello fellow fantasy lovers. I'm Jolea, I live in Virginia just outside of DC in a 200-year-old farmhouse that takes a lot of work to keep standing! It's fun though. I like the idea that I'm helping to preserve history. I've been reading fantasy since I picked up The Lord of the RIngs back in the 70s. Some of my favorite authors are Tolkien, of course, Terry Brooks, David Eddings, Roger Zelazny, M. K. Wren who wrote The Phoenix Trilogy. I'll be picking up George R. R. Martin's next next time I have a block of time to read that one. Looking forward to finding more great books!

Meera Hi, I'm Meera from MA. I was an avid sci-fi/fantasy readers few years ago but then slowed down but now I seem to be coming back to it. When I was really into it, my favorites were Robin Hobb, Guy Gavriel Kay, Kate Elliot & George R.R. Martin. My current favorite series is the Codex Alexra? by Jim Butcher. Unfortunately, I've read them all and I'm trying to get into his Dresden series.

message 1495: by Clifford (last edited Jul 18, 2011 01:07PM) (new)

Clifford Hi,
My name's Clifford and I live in London. Been reading fantasy and science fiction since I was a lad. I even went to the first World Fantasy Convention in Providence RI back in 1975! Ran around getting autographs from people like John Jakes, Lin Carter and Fritz Leiber. Jeez, that was a long time ago. I'm also a great devotee of good historical fiction, horror and thrillers. Favourites are: Moorcock, Zelazny, Tolkien,Lovecraft, Patick OBrien, Stephen King, a lot of old school. Looking forward to discovering some more contemporary writers here.

I first published in 2007, with a non-fiction work of popular history about a not-so-famous pirate named John Quelch. My first novel, a historical/fantasy set in the 17th century looks like it will be published in February. Hope to preview it here in the authors' folder.

message 1496: by Sam (new)

Sam (aramsamsam) HI!
I love Fantasy books, but as a student of German Literature I often read "the more serious stuff" while fantasy books are piling up in a dusty corner of my book shelf. Now I am trying to read more fantasy; I hope the group will motivate me to reduce the stack!

I'm a Tolkien scholar, love J.K. Rowlings' HP series and Patrick Rothfuss' books, but also everything David Eddings or Terry Pratchett. And not to forget "The last Unicorn"!

Nicholas Kotar (ravenson) | 14 comments Hello everyone! My name is Nick, and I'm brand new to the whole goodreads thing, and still trying to get a feel for it :) I'm a lover of fantasy, but I especially love the kind of fantasy that makes you see "reality" even clearer than before. The stuff that gets deep into you, won't let you go, and stays with you for years. Anything by Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Gene Wolfe, George MacDonald, Ursula LeGuin.
I'm also an aspiring writer interested in the folklore of Russia. Currently editing a novel, Raven Son.
Very excited about discussing stuff with you guys!
