Wendy (shefe) | 5 comments Hello, I was checking out the website and saw this, thought I would check it out! I read about anything that catches my eye since I was a kid. Most books I have owned were about supernatural or fantasy. My dad really added to it by starting me on Raymond E Feist and my sister on anne McCarthy. I continued with the original vampire series, J.L. Stine, Christopher Pike and Nancy Drew. ND is still my favorite and I love a good mystery or a romance or history novel anyday. I am hoping to see new novels to read. I can be very picky:) This will be my first book club outside of the one my friends and I just started. We'll see what happens

Welcome Wendy

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) Hey Wendy,

I was a big Chris Pike fan when I was younger as well. Have you heard that he's written a continuation to the Last Vampire series? I found out recently and was very excited/nervous about it. It's called Thirst now, though.

Jack Navarath (navarath) Hello! I heard about GoodReads on a Rothfuss podcast, and thought it might help me find more books to read. I've been reading Fantasy novels since i was 12ish (just turned 37)-I think the first series I read was the Belgariad. I hail from upstate New York. I've already read the books you have for April and May, but maybe June will be something I've not heard about (fingers crossed) and I can read along. Lately I've been going back and reading all the old stuff I missed growing up.

George R.R. Martin
Robin Hobb
Robert Jordan

Patrick Rothfuss
Steven Erikson
Ian C. Esselmont
Ian Irvine
Joe Abercrombie
Brandon Sanderson

and the list can go on and on.

message 1360: by Alena (new)

Alena Hi John. Yes I'm watching Game of Thrones. I can't get enough of it. And I'm counting the minutes till it comes on. I have a PVR so I'm recording the whole series and will keep it till it comes out on DVD.

message 1362: by Jack (new)

Jack Navarath (navarath) It is must see TV, because the ending is going to air on HBO before the last book ever gets published...

message 1363: by Alena (new)

Alena Let's hope the writing is done before the show is. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they do the entire Song of Ice and Fire series. Right now Season 2 is approved. If they do the whole thing then all I can say is WOW awesome.

Welcome, Robert. Please participate as a reader, not as a writer. I advise reading Goodreads guidelines for authors (a link is in the rules section of the introduction on the group home page).

This group was started as a traditional fantasy group, with the aim of getting away from urban fantasy and paranormal romance, so keep that in mind as you peruse.

Maybe that should be put in the rules? I didn't know this group had such a focus until the recent nominations thread.

Also, do you distinguish between "urban fantasy" as a synonym for paranormal romance and "urban fantasy" as in the genre that started in the eighties with Bordertown, Charles de Lint, Emma Bull, etc.?

Sam | 14 comments Hi all, I am Sam from Orlando, FL and I stumbled on this group after I joined Goodreads and started searching for new Fantasy to read. I am an avid reader of Fantasy, especially Epic and High Fantasy and the fatter the book the happier I seem to be. I began reading the genre in high school when I read The Hobbit and devoured nearly all of the DragonLance and Forgotten Realms series, found my way into the realms of David Eddings and would basically read any story that had dragons, swords, magic, elves, and battles. Now I greatly enjoy the detailed stories like Jordan's with lots of background and have a hard time finishing books that are more predictable. My favorite authors shift with time with honorable mentions (in no particular order) to Robert Jordon, George R.R. Martin, Raymond Feist, Robin Hobb, Tad Williams, and Patrick Rothfuss. I would say my absolute favorite author at this time is Joe Abercrombie, I love his books and can't get enough of his stories.

I've found several new authors to cut my teeth on since lurking in this group and hope to find many more gems I never knew existed. Over the month of May I devoured the first ten books in the Drenai Tales from David Gemmell (even though they are short stories by my current reading preferences) and found them enjoyable. I took a break from Gemmell's series after book nine to polish of The River of Shadows from Robert V.S. Redick and just finished book ten from Gemmell last night.

I'm open to suggestions for new material to read and I've added Michael Sullivan's Riyria Revelations, N.K Jemisin's Inheritance Trilogy, and Sherwood Smith's India series to my "to-read" shelf. I am leaning to starting The Inheritance Trilogy first but not sure which I want. Suggestions?

message 1375: by Maggie (new)

Maggie K | 282 comments Probably the The Night Angel Trilogy or maybe The Warded Man. They both sound up your alley. And if you want a challenge there is always Erikson's Malazan series

Thanks for the suggestions Maggie. I've already read The Night Angel Trilogy and I am a couple books into the Malazan Series but for whatever reason I am having a hard time getting into the story line. I will definitely try again though. I did check out The Warded Man and I think it may be a story I will enjoy.

Elissa (emeraldhorse) Hi, my name is Elissa. I love fantasy but I am slightly picky in what kind. Two of my favorite books are The Deed of Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon and Brightly Burning by Mercedes Lackey. One of my favorite authors is Mercedes lackey.

message 1389: by Michael (new)

Michael Graham Hi I am Michael from Western North Carolina

I enjoy most fantasy books that I have read, but I have just started reading them recently.

Some fantasy books that I have enjoyed in recent years have been by: Robert Jordan, Glen Cook, Brandon Sanderson, George R. R. Martin

It is a goal of mine to go through and read the "canon" of contemporary fantasy, because I would like to write a book one day, but I don't think I am anywhere close.

Cody (codeblu) Hey all! Saw this app for the nook color and decided to use it to help find more to read.
I live in Asheville, N.C.
Most of the athors and books I have read have been listed already and I am in the process of updating my shelves as we speak. If you see something not on my shelf and you think it would be a good read send me to it! Feel free to friend me as well.

message 1393: by Richard (new)

Richard Jackson (rdjack21) Howdy! Just thought I would say Hi. As I sit here and think about what Authors and or books I would like to say I like the list just gets so long that it would fill this page to overflowing. So what I thought I would do is add to the list of what I have seen so far by adding books/Authors I have not seen mentioned yet that I thought were worth a read.

Lynn Abbey : Daughter of the Bright Moon
Gene Wolf : The Wizard Knight series
Patricia A. McKillip : Riddle-Master Trilogy
David Webber : War God series
Janny Wurts : The Cycle of Fire series - NOTE: Love the covers on these books
Tanya Huff : Wizard of the Grove
Mickey Zucker Reichert : Renshai Trilogy

I could go on but I won't

Richard Jackson (rdjack21) John wrote: "Welcome to the group, Cody, Kari and umm... RdJack? :-) Nice to have you here."

My name is so common that I have to use a handle. If you search my name Richard Jackson on google you get back a measly 9 million hits where none of them are really me. One of the biggest problems with this that I can hardly ever use my name as a handle because another Richard has already taken it. So it's rdjack21 the 21 is because I guess other Richards are doing the same as me and I can't even get rdjack most of time so just don't even try any more.

EDIT: Updated my profile so my name should show up now :)
