I was a big Chris Pike fan when I was younger as well. Have you heard that he's written a continuation to the Last Vampire series? I found out recently and was very excited/nervous about it. It's called Thirst now, though.

George R.R. Martin
Robin Hobb
Robert Jordan
Terry Goodkind
Patrick Rothfuss
Steven Erikson
Ian C. Esselmont
Ian Irvine
Joe Abercrombie
Brandon Sanderson
and the list can go on and on.

No I havent I will have to look for it! Thanks.

Patrick Rothfuss (I love intelligent protagonists)
Tolkien
Megan Lindholm (the Windsingers :D)/Robin Hobb
Goodkind
Pratchett (Weatherwax is my hero)
I hope to get many recommendations by joining!

Welcome, Robert. Please participate as a reader, not as a writer. I advise reading Goodreads guidelines for authors (a link is in the rules section of the introduction on the group home page).
This group was started as a traditional fantasy group, with the aim of getting away from urban fantasy and paranormal romance, so keep that in mind as you peruse.

I'm a new bee here but love what i have read so far,I'm from Boise Idaho and own a small carpet cleaning co.I enjoy reading and love all the classics i also enjoy finding new authors it's like mining for gold and can be very rewarding when you find a great new one.

Maybe that should be put in the rules? I didn't know this group had such a focus until the recent nominations thread.
Also, do you distinguish between "urban fantasy" as a synonym for paranormal romance and "urban fantasy" as in the genre that started in the eighties with Bordertown, Charles de Lint, Emma Bull, etc.?

Maybe t..."
I think if you look at our bookshelf you can see what our reading history is.

I've found several new authors to cut my teeth on since lurking in this group and hope to find many more gems I never knew existed. Over the month of May I devoured the first ten books in the Drenai Tales from David Gemmell (even though they are short stories by my current reading preferences) and found them enjoyable. I took a break from Gemmell's series after book nine to polish of The River of Shadows from Robert V.S. Redick and just finished book ten from Gemmell last night.
I'm open to suggestions for new material to read and I've added Michael Sullivan's Riyria Revelations, N.K Jemisin's Inheritance Trilogy, and Sherwood Smith's India series to my "to-read" shelf. I am leaning to starting The Inheritance Trilogy first but not sure which I want. Suggestions?

Try the George R.R. Martin series. It's very good.

Thanks for the suggestions Maggie. I've already read The Night Angel Trilogy and I am a couple books into the Malazan Series but for whatever reason I am having a hard time getting into the story line. I will definitely try again though. I did check out The Warded Man and I think it may be a story I will enjoy.

I enjoy most fantasy books that I have read, but I have just started reading them recently.
Some fantasy books that I have enjoyed in recent years have been by: Robert Jordan, Glen Cook, Brandon Sanderson, George R. R. Martin
It is a goal of mine to go through and read the "canon" of contemporary fantasy, because I would like to write a book one day, but I don't think I am anywhere close.

I live in Asheville, N.C.
Most of the athors and books I have read have been listed already and I am in the process of updating my shelves as we speak. If you see something not on my shelf and you think it would be a good read send me to it! Feel free to friend me as well.

Lynn Abbey : Daughter of the Bright Moon
Gene Wolf : The Wizard Knight series
Patricia A. McKillip : Riddle-Master Trilogy
David Webber : War God series
Janny Wurts : The Cycle of Fire series - NOTE: Love the covers on these books
Tanya Huff : Wizard of the Grove
Mickey Zucker Reichert : Renshai Trilogy
I could go on but I won't

Well that you certainly will! Welcome.

My name is so common that I have to use a handle. If you search my name Richard Jackson on google you get back a measly 9 million hits where none of them are really me. One of the biggest problems with this that I can hardly ever use my name as a handle because another Richard has already taken it. So it's rdjack21 the 21 is because I guess other Richards are doing the same as me and I can't even get rdjack most of time so just don't even try any more.
EDIT: Updated my profile so my name should show up now :)
