Marie Read The Last Stand of the New York Institute (The Bane Chronicles, #9) to get the answer.

Sophieweasley22 EVERYONE GO AND READ THE BANE CHRONICLES AND YOU WILL UNDERSTAND

"Fray" is a combination of Fairchild and Gray so Jocelyn chose that name to hide herself in the mundane world so that is a clear direct connection to Tessa

Ya!
Tessa stood in place as a Iron Sister for Clary's protection spells (Tessa being shadowhunter/warlock) when she was little, since it must be done by a "Sister" and Silent Brother (Brother Zacheriah). Probs why Clary recognized her.

message 256: by ada (new) - rated it 5 stars

ada You know how that all shadowhunters have this shadowhunter children's ritual performed on them when they're born? You'd need an Iron Sister and a Silent Brother. Tessa was the one who took the place of the iron sister while performing the ritual. she performed it with brother zachariah. (view spoiler)

i read somewhere that she was able to give birth to tessa because she had the clockwork angel on

Sydney James tessa is half demon half shadowhunter

message 260: by Indie (new)

Indie Oh, you should read Last Stand of the New York Institute from The Bane Chronicles. At the end, Jocelyn shows up at Magnus' house to have him put a block in Clary's mind, and Tessa is there; Magnus and Tessa watching Pride and Prejudice (and Tessa complaining about how it wasn't like the book and how Jane Austen would be horrified if she saw it.

When you think about it there is a high chance that she will. Remember in the ending of the ID series how Tessa tells Jem about an amazing story about Fairchilds, Morgensterns and Lightwoods. Cassie Clare has brought the two series together for a reason. So Tessa could have an entrance into TMI.

And I think she is going to make the Dark Artifices relate to ID or TMI somehow.

Oh this is so confusing... now you say that Jace and Clary are related somehow? haha i think the logic is so complicated!! i should read through tmi and tid again...

message 264: by Naomi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Naomi Speakman I think Clary recognizes Tessa because she was the female warlock to cast the ceremony upon her when she was young, along with Brother Zachariah (Jem.)

message 265: by Abi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Abi What page is that on?

message 266: by Kyra (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kyra Raven wrote: "What page is that on?"

It's in the Bane Chronicles

message 267: by Naomi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Naomi Speakman In CoLS. I can't remember which page exactly, but Clary asks Jocelyn if the first Marking ceremony was done on her, and Jocelyn said "It was. We got it done through Magnus. He found a Silent Brother willing to keep it secret, and a female warlock to replace the Iron Sister."

Kaleigh I don't remeber reading about Tessa in that book.

Morgan Dallas in the bane chronicles clary meets tessa as a baby, tessa is the one who helps magnus block her memories

her and will did have children

~*bookworm*~ Is it to much to ask people to read the books and post afterwards?!
SPOILER WARNING!!! DON'T READ THIS IF YOU WANT TO FIND OUT THE FACTS YOURSELF-
Alot of people say Tessa is related to the Fairchilds but she isn't. She is only a very close friend to one of Clary's ancestors, Charlotte, so it would make sense for Tessa to watch over her friends' ancestors. Tessa is an immortal because her mother was an unmarked shadowhunter which allowed her to bear the child of a demon. Tessa is technically a warlock, but she is actually a new "species" which is why she can bear children and be immortal. Since Tessa is immortal, it would make sense she watched over her friends' descendants. Tessa is actually Jace's great-great grandmother because she married Will Herondale. She was also brother Zacariah's fiancé before he turned into a silent brother.

SuperWhoLock This is kind of random, but Will is also mentioned in TMI. Camille mentions him to Mangus when she is arrested in... maybe COFA.

Actually, they are the great-great-great grandparents.

message 275: by Naomi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Naomi Speakman Will is mentioned a lot in the second sequel of TMI.
Camille said "Do you remember London? Remember Will Herondale? Your boy ... they look alike."
Magnus gave up a memory of him to Azazal also.
And in CoLS Clary finds a long dedication on the cover of A Tale Of Two Cities with the signature "With hope at last, Will Herondale." That long dedication was his letter to Tessa.
And in CoG Clary dreams of Will, of a prince with a curse promising that all who he loved would die.

message 276: by Megan (new)

Megan Clary recognises Tessa because she was the warlock present when Jocelyn had the protection ritual (necessary to all Nephilim) performed on Clary when she was an infant. This is also the time that Jocelyn chose her mundane name; "Fray" is a mix of "Fairchild" and "Gray"

message 277: by [deleted user] (new)

if you've read cohf its because tessa helped put the protection spells on clary as a child

she is a warlock. they say shes a warlock so she is,get over it.
if cassandra clare said she was one then she is. stop second guessing the books.

you can have a shadowhunter parent. they said it was rare but still posible

message 279: by Naomi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Naomi Speakman Tessa is a warlock. She is part-demon, part-Shadowhunter. She only survived when she was born because her mother didn't know what she was, if I'm correct, thus Tessa being without a warlock's Mark.

ChameleonRose (Jessica) Was I one of the only people to figure this out straight after figuring out that Magnus was talking to Tessa at the end of COG it made sense to me back then. We knew that she was immortal, that she was friends with Magnus in I think it was CFA it's stated that a female warlock stood in for the iron sister so if you read between the lines CC actually gave us all a huge clue to Tessa's race before any of the final books she practically told us. I think Jocelyn came up with Fray because yes it is a combination of Fairchild and Gray but not because they are related to Tessa but to thank her for her help and the protection she is giving Clary. Also before anyone says that it's totally obvious I haven't read the bane chronicles yet and I haven't finished COHF yet either so this is all coming from putting things together from what I've read and other peoples theories.

message 281: by Naomi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Naomi Speakman I actually didn't have a clue it was Tessa Magnus was speaking to in Alicante, because I hadn't read TID then.
I haven't read TBC either.

true

OMG

Alexandra If you read, "City of Heavenly Fire" Cassie's last book in the Mortal Instruments, it actually explains it towards the end of the book.

Victoria It does explain it. People just have to read.

Hello I read city of heavenly fire and I was freaking right. I'm just so proud of that

message 287: by Fallon (new) - rated it 5 stars

Fallon Farmer I think that I need to go through and Read ID and MI all over again they r great books. lol then maybe I will have an idea. It's been a while since I read them and many books later. :)
I really hope that Clary and jace r not related like I seen on one of these comments about great great grandmother for him and great great grandfather for her.

message 288: by Sarah (last edited Jul 16, 2014 03:02PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sarah Tessa was the warlock who replaced the roll of the Iron Sisters in the ritual that protects shadowhunters from demonic possession when Clary was a baby.

message 289: by Claire (new) - rated it 5 stars

Claire I think the reason is because Tessa is related to jace. If they have some similar features Tessa would look familiar to her.

message 290: by Hello (new) - rated it 5 stars

Hello I think because of the ritual. I'm pretty sure either tessa or jocelyn mentioned it.

message 291: by Armin (new)

Armin John ★ Mist ☆ Cassidy ★ wrote: "In CoG, Clary sees Magnus talking to a brown-haired girl who Cassie has revealed as Tessa. Clary at this point says that the girl looks familiar. Why do you think that is?"
because Tessa used to put a protection spell on young Clary which is requested by Jocelyn.

Hrithika Shukla 1. Tessa is not a warlock
2. She is a daughter of a shadowhunter and a demon. It is known, shadowhunters and demons cannot have children. However, Tessa's mother did not know that she was a shadowhunter and there she hasn't any Marks. Therefore, it was possible for an unmarked shadowhunter to have a child with a demon.
3. She is immortal.
4. Jem became the silent brother as he was dying due to the unavailability of the silver drug.
5. Tessa knows Magnus Bane very well as he was the one who helped Will Herondale to find out he wasn't cursed.
6. Tessa marries Will.
7. Tessa IS the ancestor of Jace.
8. Tessa, Will and Jem were the part of a love triangle, where Tessa loved both the boys, both the boys loved Tessa and both the boys were parabatai.
However, Jem in the end had to become a silent brother and therefore couldn't marry Tessa and hence Tessa and Will married <3
9. I ship Tessa and Will more than Jem and Tessa.
10. Read the Infernal Devices. It's a lovely series. I personally love it more than the Mortal Instruments. It's my first favorite series.
11. The Herondale boys are so adorable ^-^

secretvv Megan wrote: "I think its because Clary saw a picture or something of Tessa in Jace's box of his dads old things. (But its probably just wishful thinking for Will)"

Hm... It may be but if you read the clockwork princess book then you would realise that Tessa and Will are together and when Clary looks at Jace (Cuz he is a descendant of the herondales) she most likely saw a trait of tessa on jace.

Justine R Doesn't Tessa have children with Will Herondale ? Because if so, it makes Tessa and Will the ancestors of Jace, and I suppose Clary is pretty familiar with Jace's face so when she saw Tessa, she recognized some features...

Book Lover how do you know that the girl talking with magnus is really tessa? cassandra clare doesn't mention that the girl is tessa, so how do you know?

NothingButBooks AJ wrote: "Very good theory. I'm still holding onto hope that she is Jace's ancestor, and that's why she looks familiar to Clary. And of course if she's his ancestor, she has to be a Herondale :)"

Tessa was married to Will Herondale, Jace's great grandfather, so she technically is a Herondale, if only by marriage.
