She did have the ceremony done. Magnus arranged for a silent brother who was sworn to secrecy (I'm thinking Jem given their history) and a female warlock. I thought Tessa would be the female warlock. It didn't say how old she was when the ceremony was done.

v.v I think that that theory is true. I think she is going t show up a lot more in COHF with Jem.

message 204: by Silly (new) - rated it 5 stars

Silly When do Tessa and Clary meet
can someone explain that in details please!!!!!!!

message 205: by Emily (new) - rated it 5 stars

Emily They don't really meet.

message 206: by Emily (new) - rated it 5 stars

Emily Clary sees Magnus talking to a woman with brown hair and days that she looked familiar but Clary couldn't remember where she'd seen her before.

Jennifer Clary is a descendant of Tessa! Maybe?

Jennifer

Dude... Have you read the books yet? Clary is a Fairchild, and Tessa married a Herondale. Jace is a Herondale."

DUDE... apparently I need a refresh on all the family trees ;)

message 209: by Brenna (new) - added it

Brenna I really don't remember Clary recognizing Tessa in City of Glass..... I mean, I could have just totally missed it. I also read TMI first because I hadn't heard of TID so that could be it too. Shoot, I would really like to remember Tessa being mentioned. Has this happened to anyone else?

message 210: by Ella (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ella *INFERNAL DEVICES SPOILERS*

My theory is that when Clary was young and had the shadowhunter-baby-birth-protection-spells done, that Tessa was the female warlock and Jem (or Bro Z, whatever) was the Silent Brother. In City of Lost Souls (I think) there is a quick exchange between Jocelyn and Jem and Jocelyn says somethings like "Brother Zahcariah! I didn't know that you'd be here..." which makes me assume that they knew each other somehow. And I think in a Cassie Clare book having the Iron Sister switched with a female warlock is just too much to be a coinidence. I think that Clary somehow subconciously remembers Tessa. Or I could be totally wrong and she just thinks that Tessa resembles Jace. :)

message 211: by Brenna (new) - added it

Brenna Good theory! :)

message 212: by Sakshi (new)

Sakshi DO NOT SEE THIS COMMENT IF YOU HAVEN'T READ TID SPOILERS!!
Because Tessa is Jace's great great grandma (not sure how many greats lol) and he's talking to Magnus because he and her were friends and their both warlocks and because of being warlocks they never dies. Oh! And also brother Zacharia (don't know how to spell it) is jem BEACAISE in order to stay alive he became a silent brother that's he says I think in city of lost souls that the herondale are like very close or has given him a favour something like that and best of all in CoHF tessa is going to talk to Jace and Jem is going to be back as a shadow hunter because the light woods are. Going to help him.

message 213: by Brenna (new) - added it

Brenna Awesome!!!!!

message 214: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, Tessa is married to Will Herondale, they also have children. In CoG, it is said that Jace's father is Stephen Herondale, which means that Tessa and Jace are related and resemble each other. So Tessa probably looked familiar to Clary. It would make sense.

message 215: by Rachel (new) - rated it 4 stars

Tessa and Will had two children. That is on the epilogue. Also, I have a family tree in my copy of Clockwork Princess. Tessa is not a warlock-it is the closest thing they can assume of what she is. But she is a shadowhunter-demon hybrid

Katrīna Lydia Isn't it that Tessa is supposedly the Warlock that did the children shadowhunter spell or whatever it's called on Clary.
And on Tessa Grays Shadowhunter Wiki you can read that she might be introduced to Clary by Jocelyn...but who knows ;D

She did have kids! Spoiler alert! She ends up with Will! Therefore causing the Herondale blood line and name to continue! If you don't know what I mean check out The Infernal Devices. Thank GOD! Tessa ended up with Will. God I hated Jem so much.

No! That would make her and Jace related! We had enough of that I think we can all agree!

They do have kids. She did marry Will and stood with him until his death when he was like super old. The only logical explanation would be that somehow they had kids and the bloodline and family name carried on through the years.

Laa di da where does it say that the girl magnus is talking to is tessa?????

message 226: by han (new) - rated it 5 stars

han Stranger wrote: "where does it say that the girl magnus is talking to is tessa?????"

its at the very end of City of Glass. During the party (after Jace and Clary had talked on the stairs I think) Clary sees Magnus talking to a girl with brown hair by the woods. Clary recognizes something familiar with the girl. Cassandra Clare has since confirmed that the brown-haired girl is Tessa Gray. (I don't know page numbers so I did the best I could with that)

message 227: by han (new) - rated it 5 stars

han *TID AND TMI SPOILERS*

After reading a lot of the comments and ideas, my theory is that Tessa was the female "warlock" (warlock is typically used to describe Tessa since it is the closest term for what she it: half shadowhunter, half demon) that preformed the protection ceremony thing on Clary. I don't think it says how old Clary was when it was done, so she could have been old enough to remember it. The ceremony was arranged by Magnus Bane, who, based on the epilogue of Clockwork Princess, has kept in contact with Tessa. It is very possible that Magnus asked Tessa to be the female warlock to take the place of an Iron Sister (Tessa is the only female warlock mentioned in any of Cassandra Clare's works who is still alive, and they needed a warlock because Jocelyn was supposed to be dead and the Clave couldn't know about her or Clary). Brother Zachariah (aka Jem Carstairs) could also have been the Silent Brother needed for the ceremony due to his yearly meetings with Tessa. In one of the Mortal Instruments books, Jocelyn acknowledges her previous acquaintance with Brother Zachariah. And, in the form a snippet from the not-yet-released City of Heavenly Fire, Jocelyn introduces Clary to Tessa in a manor that infers that Jocelyn personally knows Tessa. Jocelyn may have very well met both of these characters through Clary's ceremony, and this seems like a very good way for Cassie to have TMI and TID cross over.

RabidReader Mika wrote: "Christian wrote: "Here's a thought which just occurred to me. What if the reason Tessa looks familiar to Clary is because she has seen her before, speaking with her mother in the past. Perhaps when..."

I agree with your assumption that Tessa might make an appearance in MI6. Probably why Clare wrote ID between books MI5 and MI6. Also, remember that Tessa mothered Will's children. Will was a Herondale. Who knows what blood lines in the current MI series have Tessa's blood (related and part demon). Your talking almost 100 years.

The only thing that stands in the why of Tessa's appearance in MI6, is Jem's comment about dark times for the Shadowhunters (on the bridge - CWP). Jem and Tessa meet up after the events of MI, and Tessa didn't seem to know about the dark times. Also, if Jem was Brother Z, if Tessa is in MI6, then Brother Z would not be. Could be possible, since I think the shock Brother Z received from Jace at the end of MI5 is what cured Jem.
Purely theories.

Laa di da i found a snippet from MI6 where it says "“Okayyyyy,” Isabelle said in a low voice, “When did Brother Zachariah get hot?”" so obviously jem is in MI6, so i think that jem and tessa will play a big part in that book, so i think that it would make sense that it would be tessa and jem who did the protection ceremony, because i think that jocelyn would want those people to stay in her and her daughters life after they did something so important to help jocelyn out. but that's just what i think.

Katrīna Lydia Maybe the part from the epilogue of Clockwork Princess was right before CoHF..and Brother Z aka Jem got hot because he's not a Silent Brother anymore. You know what I mean? If the end of CP is right in the middle or near the end of TMI but not afterwards she could still be in there or Jem could probably ask Tessa for help...but who knows

Melody Midwestocean wrote: "I like the theory that Clary and Tessa are related somehow."

Tessa and Clarry are related- through the Fairchilds.
Tessa's mom didn't know she was a Shadowhunter because she and some mundane baby were switched at birth. The other baby died while receiving her ruins-marks-tats when she later grew up, and Tessa's mom was able to conceive Tessa with the demon because she'd never gotten hers.
This stuff is all clearly explained in the ID in books #1 and 2.

BECAUSE TESSA WAS THE FEMALE WARLOCK WHO HELPED MAGNUS ALTER CLARY'S MEMORIES!!!

Safiyyah i think there is a connection through magnus and maybe clary recognises her from there

RabidReader Grace wrote: "BECAUSE TESSA WAS THE FEMALE WARLOCK WHO HELPED MAGNUS ALTER CLARY'S MEMORIES!!!"

When was there a mention of a second witch helping Magnus with Clary's memory spell? Been awhile since I read the series, but I don't recall that. Why would Tessa be involved? She's a shapeshifter, nothing more. She didn't have any spell abilities.

Jessie Gray Rania wrote: "Tessa is NOT a worlock. we dont know wat she is but she is immortal. that doesnt mean shes a worlock. and we dont know that she cant have children bc shes not a worlock."

she can, she is jace's great great great grandmother and will is her great great great grand father according to the inside of the dust jacket for clockwork princess

Midwestocean wrote: "I like the theory that Clary and Tessa are related somehow."

and that would mean that clary and jace are related… like for real this time

She's a warlock, so she lives forever, remember?

Sophieweasley22 Deondra wrote: "I know Tessa is immortal, but I just don't think she's a Warlock, she doesn't have a Warlock's mark to prove it. I think she's something else entirely."

She's the offspring of a Shadowhunter and demon, Eidolon, which usually results in a stillborn, but since Tessa's mother never bore any Marks,Tessa could be born, a rare, if not unique case.
