Have you heard about SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act)?

Just a friendly reminder to contact your congressman (or woman!) today.

______

In the Senate the bill is called the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA). SOPA has gotten more attention than PIPA because it was moving faster in the legislative process. But PIPA is just as dangerous, and now it is moving faster.

PIPA would give the government new powers to block Americans' access websites that corporations don't like. The bill lets corporations and the US government censor entire websites and cut sites off from advertising, payments and donations.

This legislation will stifle free speech and innovation, and even threaten popular web services like Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook.

The bill is scheduled for a test vote in the Senate on Jan. 24th: We need to act now to let our lawmakers know just how terrible it is. Will you fill out the form above to ask your lawmakers to oppose the legislation and support a filibuster?

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I signed it. It's affecting Wikipedia too. Oh heck no!

Amelia (narknon) The Internet has changed how everything is done, but to regulate free speech, that's ridiculous. I understand why they might be trying to do things about copyright infringement, but this is way overboard.

I signed too.

Lyzzibug ~Still Breathing~ (lyzzibug) | 76 comments I have signed as well. That is just too much.

Sandra (sleo) I've signed everything I've seen. Here's a petition from Google worth signing:

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I think I'll be making some phone calls today...

Wikipedia has a great blackout page, with contacts.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) That's how I found out about it, MrsJ.

Nobody messes with my Wikipedia!

carol. | 2616 comments I didn't hear about it until recently, but a friend just posted an update--seems the co-signers are dropping off the bill in large numbers. Yay!

Sandra (sleo) Not large enough, yet!

Agreed. The founder of the bill put out a notice today saying it was pushed back to Feb in order to deal with congress being on retreat.

Scarlet OMG! I just heard of this today!
I'm not American though, I don't think there is much I can do

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) Obama said there was no way he'd sign that thing, yeah!!!

Bill (kernos) | 350 comments This has been on my mind much lately and I have sent multiple letters to my congresswoman and senators. I also plan to call them. I fear the big money is buying votes. All but a few senators are supporting PIPA. Even my favorite Liberal senator is for PIPA and will definitely hear my rant. I don't forget what's happened to Wikileaks even without these egregious new laws.

@Scarlet— IMO, one doesn't have to be American. I have written to a lot of foreign politicians and regulatory agencies about issues that concern me.

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) NDAA was one big pile of damned if you damned if you don't because it also regulated what costs would be allowed to the military. Lets not forget the language was also changed before it was passed.

Yeah, so it's now so vague it can be interpreted any way at all. But it states that American Citizens can be detained indefinitely.

There's a lawyer's translation of the legalese in it let me see if I can dig it up.

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) From the armed services:

A Pretty good overall that also discusses how the NDAA now declares American Citizens outside the parameters of the bill: http://verdict.justia.com/2012/01/02/...

Also some good news on PIPA:

Well, this is a whole political discussion that's probably out of place here, but I'll just say that a) I'm disappointed in Obama for not closing Guantanamo, and b) the whole detention without habeas corpus is repellent to me, and c) after bin Laden was killed the government said that al Qaeda is essentially dead. Also having the military operating within the boundaries of the United States is strictly off limits, or it has been for years and years. The second article gave a good explanation. And yes, Obama made his signing statement, but what about subsequent presidents? Also, it says 'until the end of hostilities'. Now, pray, tell me when THAT might be? They're going to end 'terror' in the world? Ha. If there was ever an open ended provision, that was it.

I am excited that we seem to have changed Congress' mind regarding SOPA and PIPA.

message 24: by Bill (new)

Bill (kernos) | 350 comments How do you all feel about surveillance of citizens by the government? NYC is going to start using the new machines that "see through your clothes". So now they know who you are and where you're going (all those eyes on the street poles), who you associate with, what you believe and even what you carry in your purses or pockets, your bra and jock strap pouch size and much more...

Who is more likely to cause you harm, your government or police or a 'terrorist'?

message 25: by Terry (new)

Terry Simpson | 261 comments They can use PIPA/SOPA and naything else they want. They can lockdown the internet all they want. They can hide the encroachment on freedom within the disguise of 'halting piracy' all they want. Or try to.
No one has a more staunch grip on their internet than the Chinese government. And where is the a lot, if not the most, piracy happening? China.
SOPA and PIPA will not stop pirates and they know this. So what is a really about? Things that make you go hmmmmm.
