Matthew, since your invite manifesto includes this subject, I thought I start it off with a link to exactly this topic on my website. Other members may read the entire blog about why I write, which is too large to include here.

Thanks to Matthew for the invite. Why I write...

1. Because it's all I know how to do (I am completely unemployable)
2. Because I love love love it!!
3. Because if I didn't, I would die.

I tend to go with what Orwell said on the subject, i.e. all writer's are motivated to some extent by ego. It's true. I write because I want to be known, I want to share, and I want to know that I might teach someone, somewhere, something. In short, I was inspired by the written word and specific genres and would like to do the same for someone else.
