This thread WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS. Please limit the discussion to content from chapters 89 thru 93. No need to mark spoilers, but please don't discuss events beyond chapter 93.

Chapter 93 ends as Valentine collapses in Noirtier's room..

Chapter 89: a tender heart intervenes to derail the plans of the Count.

(I really want to read this book non-stop.)

Kim (kimmr) | 931 comments You are powering along. I'm trying to slow down, but it's a bit pointless. The chapters towards the end are really quite short and I find it very difficult to stop listening!

I'm through chapter 98, and it's hard to put the book down. I want to find out how everything works out. After 900+ pages, I'm rather attached to these people.

I know what you mean. I read this two years ago, but honestly don't remember many of the details at the end here. I have just finished chapter 89... and I can't remember how the duel works out. Will I manage to finish this evening? Probably not, but I'll give it a try.

C 92: Two! I had totally forgotten this part.

Sigh, there are absolutely no duels in my stupid abridged version at all. Or any of the other juicy stuff you guys have been mentioning.

Lol! Two, what, Hayes? Two duels?

I cannot believe that they cut out the good stuff in the abridged version, Lee! They could have cut all of that blather about drugs, and I wouldn't have missed it. And they might have condensed Caderouse's story a bit...

I think you would be shocked at what they cut out. Reading all your comments has me completely lost. I'll definitely have to re-read it some day.

You should!!

Two down... although not from the duel.
When Caderousse died The Count said, enigmatically, "One". He didn't say "Two", so I did.

I read the semi-abridged version a few years ago and I don't remember the bit about the duel (well, the non-duel), but there's a lot I forget these days so that's not surprising either. (What? Who are you again?)

Ah, Fernand! Yes, I did the same thing as you did. :)

And, how utterly depraved and devious to involve Benedetto in the plot, ruining a son who was unaware of the fact.

That is why everyone should not only read the unabridged, but the Buss translation. The others leave a lot out.

I second that!
