I need a name for my books...one without Amara? Which isn't my real name, just a name I really like. But I don't wanna use it.

What I like the sound of is a name that sounds like something else, or is witty. Like the author of the "The Name Of This Book Is Secret" or something. I can't remember who that is, but they had a great name.

message 63: by [deleted user] (new)

XD I can't spell it, but it was a pseudonym. Pseudonymous Bosch, that's it! But not only was it a great name, but it was a parody of another author or something...

message 64: by [deleted user] (new)

I like old fashioned names....this'll probably sound weird, but I love irish/gaelic names, as well as native american names, scandinavian.....just rather obscure. I also like to pick names because of what they mean.

However, I could also go for just a really neat name.^^

message 65: by [deleted user] (new)

How about Evelyn?

message 66: by [deleted user] (new)

XD I sorta liked Taisiya...but I'm not sure that it wound describe me, as a writer. If I'm making ANY sense by now. XD

message 67: by [deleted user] (new)

@Claire: Idunno. It feels a bit....regular to me.

message 88: by Hope (new)

Hope Random question, but: how does one actually come up with an author name?

message 89: by Eve (last edited Sep 01, 2012 09:11AM) (new)

Eve (emusings) Well, there's nothing that says you have to come up with one, but if you feel that you would like a pen name to write under, than there are a couple courses of action you could take.

1. Do you have a name you like? Since aren't any real rules to taking a pseudonym, you have the freedom to pick whatever name you choose. This idea also helps when you're trying to pick a name that rolls off the reader's tongue, because you can craft the name until it sounds the way you like it. I read an article a while ago that went into some specifics about pen names of this sort, and also others (the article) Among these tips was the idea that using a two-syllable first name and a one syllable last name was the tried and tested pen name sweet spot. So again, you can do what you like, choose that name you've always loved, and mess with it until it's music to your ears. Be careful, though. It can be easy to make a name that sounds like a name you'd find on a Disney fairy website, and while Sparkle Pixiebottom is a fabulous name, it might not sell too many books.

2. The way I often prefer to go is choosing a name that is either some form of my own, or one that is meaningful to me. Take J.K. Rowling, for example. She initializes her first and middle names, so that it's ambiguous, (This brings up another selling point, where having a name that could be male or female helps raise the number of buyers.) but also her name stays close enough to her own that it avoids confusion and sounds professional. Using this idea, you can play with different ways to initial things in your real name to come up with a classy pen name. The other branch of this personal perspective is choosing a name that is meaningful to you. I got my name, Eve, from my great-great-grandmother Eveline Cross. I chose her name as my pseudonym, because I can both honor her memory and have a name that is different than my own, but when it comes down to it, my namesake and so myself.

I'd take a look at the article I linked up there for more ideas.

Good luck!

Hey, Alexandar. I'd love to take a look at some of you work some time, and please feel free to do the same for other members of the group.

Cheers!

Hmmm... Well since I'm a little new and I guess have just gotten serious about writing, but I am afraid I am still young and bright and have not yet lost my purpose to live yet, I would like to create an authors name since my 'real' name is simply and plainly boring to the point. Maybe something a little posh and delicate would be nice to make up for my lack of character in those simple letters. If anyone has any ideas please spill :)

message 95: by Eve (new)

Eve (emusings) Hey, Rose! Firstly, don't fear youth, even when it comes to writing. It's great that you've gotten serious about writing early in life. It means you have all the more time to grow as an author. Now, on to the subject of names. I'll give you some first and last names to play around with and maybe a couple of other ideas.

First names:
Adeline
Alexandria
Amelia
Claudia
Esme
Eugenia
Juliet
Lilian
Marianne
Scarlett
Sophia
Vivian
Veronica
Victoria

Last Names
Butler
Carter
Churchill
Clancy
Cohen
Mason
Price
Roberts
Spencer
Taylor
Turner
Williams

You may also want to initialize letters instead of spelling out a while name (Like J.K. Rowling or E.E. Cummings)

Hope this helps!
-Eve

Thank you so much Eve! It did really help the creative juice milling around in my head to spurt out sometime new and elegant. I do really appreciate it! :)

message 97: by [deleted user] (new)

Hahahhahahaha omigosh I was laughing so hard by the end of that post! See Rose isn't my real name c: My real name is Katie, but Rose is my middle name I liked that much better! That is an excellent idea! My grandmother is into Geneology a lot so I can just write a quick e-mail to her! Lololololololol!!!! If I did the pet and street thing then my name would be: Smores' Windosr :D :D :D :D :D

message 98: by Ella (new)

Ella (ellarosewood) | 223 comments If I did that, I would probably go my MC Waterside, which wouldn't actually be that bad.

R.E. wrote: ":-) I'd read a book written by Smores' Windsor...just saying. My first pet was a cat named Tom...so I didn't go that route. LOL"
