The Last Bike Ride question

I've just read this short book which contained details about nuclear weapons and submarines and assumed that artistic license had been used quite liberally as only a nuclear scientist or submarine commander would know the true details. I'm presuming the author is neither.
Does it matter though? It didn't spoil my enjoyment of the story, but I'd be interested to know if others are more keen on accuracy.
