Nothing much, it seems. There's a new Roy Andersson film coming up apparently...And P.T. Anderson's film of INHERENT VICE, too.
When you acknowledge how vast the gap is between people's hopes vs the crushing letdowns which occur when these blockbusters are actually delivered, I can't fathom why anyone 'looks forward' to any film opening anymore. I thought that was all done away with. These years are seeing astounding duds 'Mars Needs Moms'...'John Carter of Mars'..'The Great Gatsby in 3D'.. kaboom! kaboom! kaboom! Staggeringly out-of-scale flops, in comparison to the amount of money spent in the budgets. It kinda suggests that people still allow themselves to be lulled into the trap set by clever previews.
Now with some of these cable-tv series lately; I think 'hoping' and 'looking forward to' is more understandable, and warranted. You're pretty sure the product is going to be consistent and maintained from season to season.

i'm getting tired of waiting for INHERENT VICE. bring it on already!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
saw two trailers that were intriguing. one for the new jim jarmusch film, with tilda swinton and a few other fine actors. apparently it's about vampires. i think it's called ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE.
i saw another for a film called THE DOUBLE, which is a little scary, in that, it's a film based on one dostoevsky's finest novellas. so, yeah, i might have some preconceptions. i saw the preview twice and didn't see a thing stating dostoevsky had anything to do with it. upon further inspection (imdb), yes, they credit him with the basic story.
the preview looks a bit stagey, but wallace shawn and mia wasikowska are in it, so i'll probably see it. jessie eisenberg plays the lead .. not sure if he can pull off the complexity of the content, but ... we'll see.
I want to see the Tilda Swinton film too, which also stars Tom Hiddleston and Mia Wasikowska.I would see THE DOUBLE because I love Wasikowska and the director, Richard Ayoade, also made SUBMARINE, a quirky little film that I really enjoyed.
re Mia Wasikowska ... there should be another out soon. a starring role this time for her, the movie is called Tracks and tells the story -that was featured in National Geographic- of the woman who walks across the Australian outback with camels. i saw it at the Vancouver film festival last fall. it's good - i can't really imagine Mia Wasikowska bad- and the story is good it just isn't really striking the way some of her work -Stoker comes to mind- is. Adam Driver -who i am really starting to respect- has a small role in it as the National Geographic photographer that spends a couple of stretches of the trek with her.
thanks for the words, sooz. i'm up for seeing that aussie sister turns out. i'll keep an eye out for it.
so the summer block buster season is done and it's time to look forward to the fall winter releases of the more introspective movie. yay!i just read that the director of Babel, 21 grams, Biutiful -and my favourite, Amores Perros- has a new one set for release some time this winter. it's called Birdman. if the new one is as good as his previous work it should be a great watch.
and even though i should probably know better, there is also a new one by Christopher Nolan that i can't help but be curious about. i love sci fi and i still believe he has what it takes to be a good director. he has one coming out called Interstellar. i want to believe.
and as has been mentioned the wonderful P.T. Anderson has his film adaptation of Inherent Vice coming out some time this fall/winter.
anyone else have movies they've heard about that strike their fancy?

We should change the title of this folder to 2014/15!
I'm curious about BIRDMAN too. It's with Michael Keaton who hasn't had a decent role in a long time.
I'm looking forward to a new Fatih Akin film, starring Tahar Rahim, called THE CUT.
SERENA, directed by Susanne Bier and starring Jennifer Lawrence.
The Dardenne Brothers' TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT starring Marion Cotillard.
LILTING, directed by Hong Khaou and starring Ben Whishaw.
THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING starring Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne, about Stephen Hawking's relationship with his wife.
I'm getting kind of psyched about INHERENT VICE as pictures are released. We'll see.Roy Andersson has a new film coming out, entitled A PIGEON SAT ON A BRANCH REFLECTING ON EXISTENCE. Yee haw!
want to see both of those, no doubt. i also saw a trailer for a film called THE CONGRESS, featuring robin wright that is directed by the guy that did WALTZ FOR BASHIR, and it looks like a strange science fiction piece ... the trailer was interesting.
imdb says it was released last year, but ... well, we know that isn't true. here is a link:

you can see the casting choices - josh brolin as bigfoot - i kept seeing a younger nick nolte in the role when i read the book - mr brolin could work as a poor man's nick nolte.
owen wilson was born to play coy harlingen.
maya rudolf as petunia leeway ... nice.
reese witherspoon as penny, which is cool, because she'll be in like two scenes.
benicio del toro as sauncho, perhaps reprising his role from FEAR AND LOATHING IN LOS VEGAS ...
Julie wrote: "The Dardenne Brothers' TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT starring Marion Cotillard...."that is most intriguing.
oooooh thanks Julie ..... I didn't know Fatih Akin had a new one coming out. that makes me very excited. Congress did come out last year ...at least I saw it at the 2013 Vancouver film festival last fall. I had really mixed feelings about it ... didn't like it as much as I thought I would.
hmmm. when i was in seattle recently i saw a trailer for it - i never saw it released in the bay area - strange. perhaps i will wait for dvd.
it is quite likely there was a distribution hold up or something. it might well be it is just getting into the theatres now .... regardless of when the actual release date was.

That one. IV.

INTERSTELLAR stars Matthew McConaughey and Jessica Chastain, so that intrigues me. I'm not as big of a sci-fi fan as you, but if it has a good story (and good actors) I'll watch it.
Phillip wrote: "oh, i thought this was the list for films you want to see."we could start another thread for upcoming movies we are looking forward to bashing. :0
on that note I heard that James Cameron had another Avator coming out.
Julie: I know you love Moritz Bleibtreu as much as I do, so I wanted to mention that he has one in post production called The Woman in Gold. It stars Helen Mirren, Tatiana Maslany (of Canada's Orphan Black fame)and Ryan Reynolds. I don't think Bleibtreu's part is big BUT he plays the painter Gustav Klimt, so it should be interesting!

i think the james cameron film alone warrants such a thread.
The Roy Andersson film won Best Picture at the Venice Film Festival, which I hope means it'll get a US release...

I can't really envision Bleibtreu as Klimt, but he's a good enough actor to pull it off.
Speaking of the art world--I want to see Mike Leigh's new one, MR. TURNER, with Timothy Spall playing J.M.W. Turner. I think he won best actor at Cannes.

Love the title! I want to see it too. Loved his films, YOU THE LIVING and SONGS FROM THE SECOND FLOOR.
Does anyone know anything about that Eleanor Rigby movie? I'm quite interested to see that. Supposedly it follows a relationship first from the man's POV, then the woman's, then a more outsider POV? It's supposed to be fairly long, or possibly separate movies.
It is three separate movies. The neutral one, Them, comes out first.http://www.npr.org/2014/09/12/3477284...
my girlfriend mentioned it the other day and i looked it up. has a pretty nice cast - jessica chastain, james mcavoy, viola davis, isabelle huppert ...i didn't realize it was going to be three films - sort of like the notion of RASHOMON, on drawn out a bit more.

Yes, great cast. Definitely want to see it.
