Clickety (clix) | 25 comments Katie - I didn't like Saga as much as I liked Epic, but I still thought it was a wonderful book!

message 53: by [deleted user] (new)

When I first read it I hadn't read any actual fantasy authors so I thought it was good. But when I reread Eragon I had read WoT, LoD, SoS, and a bunch of other fantasy novels. It was horrible compared to the others.

message 54: by Katherine (new)

Katherine (printed_garden) Is Saga more fast paced?

message 55: by Rustyford (new)

Rustyford | 32 comments way back to Olin message 23 (sorry, I went out of town and didn't have internet service much)

It is a cop-out because you have 3(?) people survive and they each have the ability to make anything happen just by thinking about it, and not one of them wants to keep the power and try to learn to harness it? not likely.

i like to think im not a cinic. that 3 people could do the moral thing and not be selfish. i also think that they relized that their unconscince is more powerful the their conscience desires.

think about it, to have the power to make all your dreams come true would be pretty cool, but if all your nightmares came true and terrorize everybody as well...?

Olin | 197 comments Mod
and i dont get the difference between epic and saga

message 58: by Clickety (new)

Clickety (clix) | 25 comments Katie - I didn't have issues with pacing in either book. I found Saga hilarious where most won't, I think, because I've always been a little unsettled about how bloodthirsty PCs are supposed to be in MMORPGs.

Olin - "epic" and "saga" just as words are pretty much synonymous;Epic and Saga are two different books set in the same universe.

message 59: by [deleted user] (new)

Saga is naturally supposed to be six books, and epic... well that one I have no idea.

Hylian Princess (hylianprincess) I did not like Red badge of courage!

oh, and, DO NOT READ A CERTAIN SLANT OF LIGHT! I couldn't even finish it! IT IS A BAD BOOK!!

message 61: by [deleted user] (new)

you posted that twice.

Hylian Princess (hylianprincess) oops...there!

message 63: by Jane (new)

Jane (jane_jones) | 56 comments Oh I have to chime in with Shad - this whole "destined to greatness" thing has got to go I love fantasy but there are so many cliches. They drive me insane.

Even Sanderson who I like - had the street orphan Vin who is mentored by the charsimatic wizard. But there was enough "other" original stuff in there that I could forgive that.

Jane

Hylian Princess (hylianprincess) Also along with Shade: Have you noticed that Eragon was basically a fantasy Star Wars? Eragon is Luke, Mertag is Lea gone evil(creepy...) Morzan is a mix between Darth Mal and Darth Vadar. Bram is Obie One (however you spell that)

message 65: by Olin (new)

Olin | 197 comments Mod
go to youtube and type in: "Star Wars vs Stargate"‏
it is good for a few laughs.

message 66: by [deleted user] (new)

type in... just so you know I was bored out of my mind when I did this. Type in Youtube- Drizzt vs Darth Vadar. I got a pretty good kick out of that.

Hylian Princess (hylianprincess) *sniff* I can't go on YouTube...oh well.

message 68: by [deleted user] (new)

oh... I'm sorry!

message 69: by Olin (new)

Olin | 197 comments Mod
me to!!!

message 70: by [deleted user] (new)

Not being able to go onto YouTube is like not being able to know the news. You can't see the latest funny videos.

message 71: by Jane (new)

Jane (jane_jones) | 56 comments Twilight!!! - Gag there is nothing good in this book - bad writing, unoriginal concept, bad characters, contrived conflict, terrible ending. Not sure what all the fuss is about.

message 72: by [deleted user] (new)

There are more hopeless romantics in the world than one realizes.

message 73: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 19 comments I liked the Twilight series. But the writing is nothing amazing and there is nothing complex about the books. More of an easy romance read.

I recently read Greywalker and was really struggling with it. I was dumb enough to read the second one called poltergeist. I had hoped she would do better w/ the second because the potential is there but, no. I've never struggled to like the lead character so much.

message 74: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 19 comments Oh, also Wicked Lovely. Ugh. Again I was dumb enough to read the next one and it too was bad.

Olin | 197 comments Mod
the book called spellfire and the two that come after it. (i think there are 4 total now) they are horrable!!! in the first book the main charecter starts out on a jorney to silverymoon, after the 3rd book she dies about 100 miles short of the city. you cant get worse then that. oh and every Very Powerful Person in the realms is out to get her. EVERY.

message 76: by [deleted user] (new)

wow.... that sucks. It's like being put on one side of the world and you have to cross all across the country to get to your house, it just happens that like, 20 miles away you get shot. That would suck

message 77: by Olin (new)

Olin | 197 comments Mod
no she killed herself

message 78: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, well that's just stupid! Jeez, you get soo close and all of a sudden you're thinking. Huh... I'm done. And just keel over.

message 79: by Olin (last edited Jan 05, 2009 09:09PM) (new)

Olin | 197 comments Mod
yeah basicly

message 80: by Jane (new)

Jane (jane_jones) | 56 comments I'm also not a fan of "Wicked" - too depressing.

message 81: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 19 comments Wow Olin... that series sounds horrible. The main character kills herself before reaching her goal? Why did the author think someone would enjoy that story? I wonder if there is anyone who has.

message 82: by Brian (new)

Brian (fantasyaddict) | 67 comments Well, Maybe Eragon wasn't the greatest fantsy book, but think about the fact that this KID was only 15 when the book was published. That means he was what, 13, when he started to write it!!! How many 13 or 14 year olds who could even think about tackling a project such as that. Come on, give the kid a break.

message 83: by liz (new)

liz (lizevans) Worst book ever ... Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer

message 84: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 19 comments Are we talking about the same Eragon series they made a movie out of? Wow... the kid was only 13 when he wrote that? I haven't read the book but still... wow.

message 85: by Brian (last edited Jan 07, 2009 07:44PM) (new)

Brian (fantasyaddict) | 67 comments Well, maybe I should read the dust jacket a little closer. He was 15 when he started writing it. But still, I don't think the book was as bad as some are suggesting. Besides, I think I could easily add another 15 to 20 books to my read list, but because they were so forgettably bad I don't remember the titles or the authors names.

message 86: by Erin (new)

Erin | 4 comments I think the worst book i've ever read was "Lord of the Flies". It was the most boring book i've ever read. I mean the title has nothing to do with a bunch of kids trapped on an island trying to see who's top dog. I mean...what do you expect when you get a bunch of guys trapped on an island? Of course they're gonna see who's gonna be in charge and they're gonna fight because its in a males blood for their ego and pride. I just really disliked the book. It was useless to me.

message 87: by Eliza (new)

Eliza (la_miss) | 102 comments I wonder how different the book would have been if it was a bunch of girls instead of boys. Is it just guys that have a tendancy towards violence? I dont remember specifics about the book but I remember liking it.

message 88: by Erin (new)

Erin | 4 comments You know what Eliza, that's a very interesting question. What if the book had been all girls. Do you really think it would have been any different?

message 89: by [deleted user] (new)

Not really, even girls can be a little controlling at times. It would have just been more... feminine.

message 90: by Erin (new)

Erin | 4 comments True...actually i think it would have been worse because girls will start cat fights. Either way, the book didn't catch my attention. haha

message 91: by Emery (new)

Emery (eshier) | 2 comments There is a book about the Rugby team called Miracle in the Andes. I think of it as the Anti-Lord of the Flies. All the true adults die and they are left to their own devices. They could have quickly degenerated, but never really do. I'd recommend it.Miracle in the Andes: 72 Days on the Mountain and My Long Trek Home

message 92: by Erin (new)

Erin | 4 comments Hey thanks Emery. I might just check that one out.

message 93: by Cindy (new)

Cindy This goes along with the Eragon. I thought Brisingr was the worst book I've ever read.

I had read the first two, now when I read Eragon it was so so, the second one was a little bad. But the third was just pure junk. Literally nothing happens in it and it was really a waste of my time to read it.

In "other" books, I would have to say Lipstick Jungle and any book like that was a waste of my time.

message 94: by [deleted user] (new)

lipstick jungle?

message 95: by Cindy (new)

Cindy Yeah, I guess it could be considered Chick Lit but it was just so mind blowingly boring and dull I felt like sticking forks in my eyes.

the greatest line involving a utinsel "I'll cut your heart out with a spoon!!!"

message 98: by Kathy (new)

Kathy | 38 comments Can I please say that Stardust was a huge disappointment???? After I heard so many good things about Neil Gaiman, that book completely shoots the pooch. Not that I was pulled to American Gods to begin with, but now I don't know.

message 99: by Kathy (new)

Kathy | 38 comments Has anyone read Legends II? This was my first intro to a number of the authors, and what I have found is the quality of the work of the short stories/novellas in this collection is not what I found in the respective authors' books/epics. Some I liked better (Gabaldon's Outlander) and some worse (Gaiman--see above).

Agreed, awful and stereotypical.
I love Wot am in the middle now.
Never read twilight, hate love stories.A friend showed me the film, and i found it soppy and dull in the second half.
