Hope everyone who can celebrate Halloween has a good one.
On the flip side - really hope anyone in the way of Hurricane Sandy stays safe and, if possible, is with loved ones. The news over here is looking worrying, my thoughts are with anyone caught up in it!
Please just follow any hurricane survival instructions that have been given - there are already pictures floating around the net of people putting themselves in danger by going out in some awful conditions. Please just stay safe until this blows over and if you can check back in with us lot after to let us know you're safe.
I've heard from other friends over there that they're asking 911 be used for emergencies only, 311 is for anything else. This is put in place to free up the emergency line.
I just hope you're all safe!

April Lyn (aprilallyear) Man, this group has just really fallen off the radar. I can't believe that more than half the topics haven't been updated for a month or more. I thought it was just me but it seems like everyone's gotten kinda lackadaisical. For a long time (like 8 months) this was my favorite group on Goodreads. I hope we snap out of it!

It's just happened that I've been reading things for other groups that are rereads, so I don't consider them dusty (for these purposes, anyway - many of them I have had for years!), or reading books that I haven't had that long. Whenever I do read something I consider fits the category, I add it to my 'dusty shelf', and this month I finally got around to reading one of the books I put on my list way back when I joined. And I haven't had anything that fit the last few themes; funny, how I did for some months running, and then not for a few running. But I keep checking in, and participating wherever I can! I don't do e-books, I wanted to pick my own reads, and I don't think I have any dusty memoirs. Also, in case anybody has been wondering who's doing it, I've been trying to keep the 'currently reading' stuff current. If someone has put in an end date, but didn't change the shelf to read, or if they are showing on their own page that they have finished it, I change it to read. I do this every few months, because I get kind of sick of seeing the same books for most of the year. As far as I can tell, the ones that are there are still being read, no matter how far back the begin dates go. I started doing it when there were a whole bunch, and it looked like some people were putting them on there, and then forgetting to keep them updated on the group bookshelf, or maybe just never came back to the group.

It's true! I haven't been on here much and it's because it's gotten so busy with the holidays and stuff. I'm just trying to survive. My reading and blogging have taken a hit too. I hope everyone else is just busy too at the end of the year.

I hope we snap out of it! I love this group. It helped me read some books that I've been scared to read for years. And I loved reading Life of Pi with you and talking about it!

Do you have any ideas to liven the group up? I'm stumped for ideas and I need a fresh perspective.

Denise - Big thank you for keeping those shelves clean. I get tired of seeing the same books there, too!

Wow Denise, you're brilliant for doing that. I'm afraid I spent this month doing NaNoWriMo and picked up a book for the first time in almost a month yesterday :O
It's almost christmas and I have one, maybe two presents for family so far :S
More importantly, it's getting chilly and my cat is practically suffocating me in my sleep in order to keep warm.... fun times ;D

Okay, so I've been asked if I'd like an ARC from the guy who wrote Bob Moore: No Hero & Bob Moore: Desperate Times as I reviewed the first two and loved them and this will be the third in the series - I am sooo excited, it's just in time for the christmas trip home (something to read on a 7+ hour bus journey)!
This does, however, mean I have a fair few reviews to catch up on on my blog - so I need to get writing (again :S) starting with my Les Mis review :O Fun times!
On the bright side I have now gone up to 3 maybe four christmas pressies for the family!

Hello Nelowfar, that sounds like a lovely idea, I hope your group manage to raise the funds needed.
I'm lucky to live close to Rochester (where Dickens got a lot of his inspiration from for many of his books) and spent a fair bit of time trying to figure out the mystery of Edwin Drood myself ;)

Okay, so... I saw The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey last night and it was AMAZING!! Sow ell cast, well shot and well done with the effects etc. Absolutely loved it!

There were critics who absolutely panned it but I'm not sure they were seeingt he same film? Maybe they accidentally went into screen 4 instead of screen 5 or something?

Anyway, Peter Jackson can have all my money because I WILL be getting this on DVD asap to keep me sane until the second film comes out ;D

I liked the Hobbit too! I have a few nit-picky things about it straying from the book...like the whole Moria battle which gave Thorin this arch enemy hunting him all the time. I didn't like it because I felt like it made Bilbo a secondary character instead of the main character. And I don't know if I'm a fan of Radagast....But other than that, it was an epic movie and i LOVED the music the dwarves sang. More songs in the next movies, please!! Especially if the hot dwarf is singing. :)

message 211: by April (new)

April | 570 comments Saw it this weekend and LOVED it! I didn't really have any qualms with it...I just LOVED it! I'll be getting the dvd also, Hayley...and seeing the next two movies, no doubt!

Now...my bro said that the parts that I was not remembering from the book or that seemed different...were from other poems and books that Tolkien wrote, so I am now on an adventure to read all things Tolkien...I've got a year before I need to be up on my Hobbit lore! ;) But as far as I was concerned it was Perfection! I loved the way they tied everything together for the LotR...and an emphatic YES! bring on more hot dwarf singing! :)

Jessica - there were a few bits missed out, but the stone giant scene made up for some of it in my mind (considering it wasn't an actual scene in the book, just mentioned in passing towards the storm) ;D The dwarves singing was amazing!

Yay April! I'm kind of glad they added in extra from outside The Hobbit.... but this does now mean I may have to take on the challenge of The Silmarillion - tried that once & didn't get far - but I must ask... you two are saying hot dwarf, as in singular, I'm sure I could name THREE hot dwarves so which one are you talking about? ;P

message 213: by April (last edited Dec 20, 2012 04:57AM) (new)

April | 570 comments Ok...In concede! There was more than one hot dwarf...namely I meant Thorin...but he had hot company in Fili and Kili!!! :)

Hayley, Ugh...I hear you on The Silmarillion. I had to put that one back on the shelf on more than one occasion (and still haven't made it through)...but I do, now, have it on hold for the book on CD...maybe that will help!?! (along with about 7 others that JRR wrote that I never read! It'll be a fun, fantasy winter!:)

Yup, the hot uncle & his nephews, gotta love them ;D

I may try at some point... slowly & in small doses may help as I tried to consume it last time (bad for my digestion methinks) and it just had me all confuzzled.

Gotta ask - anyone here from NZ or Aus and if so can you make yourselves known so us lot waiting for tomorrow know there's wifi after the apocalypse, kay thanx!

message 215: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (Books: A true story) (booksatruestory) | 490 comments Mod
I made it through the Silmarillion!! I've actually read it twice. I have lots of notes on who is who (which is the hardest part of the book because everyone has like 3 names). I can share notes if you want. It's an excellent book and really not that hard once you get into it.

Hayley - I don't understand the New Zealand and Australia relation to the apocalypse. Is it because it will hit them first??? :)

Jessica - full respect for managing it not once but twice!! And yes, that was the joke - they'll be the first (I think NZ by an hour or two) to hit apocalypse day ;D Although I'm happy to hear they're still around, obviously the mayans didn't care much for timezones!

As much as I loved Kili in this, and he was hot, I could never choose between him and Thorin.... sorry Fili ;)

Right folks, here comes the sad part of this post... I'm away off to the parents tomorrow and leaving my laptop here ;_; This means chances of me being online between now and the morning of the 29th (back late on 28th) are pretty slim...

So happy holidays to you all, whichever holidays it is you celebrate, and I hope you all have a lovely time :D

message 219: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) | 491 comments Mod
Sshhh but I've snuck onto my little sister's laptop to say I hope you all had a lovely holidays :D (and also that her keyboard is a bit screwed up in that it's further to the left than mine so I'm having to watch what I'm typing!)

I stopped reading Shantaram for the holidays as it was too heavy to lug up on a coach so I took my eReader instead and am rather enjoying A Place of Greater Safety.

Happy New Year to you too, Lilaboti! I had the same issues...I didn't complete my challenge with the dusties...but I did read a ton of books (and did read the "number" challenge I set for myself (and beyond!:)) But...happy to have met so many new bookish friends and chatting with them about reading...whether it was on the dusty list or not!
Looking forward to continuing with the group and some new goals in 2013! :)

Okay, so somehow some user with no pics, no books and who has only been a member since this month has become friends with me without even sending a friend request... how the heck is this possible and has anyone else had this happen to them?

message 225: by Alana (new)

Alana (alanasbooks) Is your account set up to automatically add friends from facebook? Mine did that and confused the heck out of me.

message 226: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) | 491 comments Mod
Nope, definitely not, would get too confusing & I don't actually like all the 'friends' on fb that I was guilt tripped into being friends with (woohoo custom privacy settings!) so giving them that extra ability to annoy me is a big no-no! This was just weird :S

message 227: by Alana (new)

Alana (alanasbooks) Tricked into, lol. Just be a brat like me and go through every few months and delete a bunch of them. If I didn't talk to them in high school, why would I now? Sounds harsh I suppose, but honestly, everyone only has so much time for friendships, they need to make them worthwhile.

Anyway, if that wasn't the cause, then I have no idea. You can always delete them. Just make sure you check all of your settings, it's possible you clicked something you didn't mean to or forgot about.

I'm very tempted.... some are incredibly pestering & keep trying to chat to me when I really don't want to contact them. I hate being seen as 'mean' though so I'm getting myself stuck in a hard spot :S

I've deleted them. no clue who they are, no pic, sorry :P

Alana (alanasbooks) Finally got out to see Les Mis last night. Wow! Anne Hathaway was incredible, the kids were excellently cast and the whole thing flowed together so well that I had to keep reminding myself I wasn't in a Broadway theater and not supposed to clap! I highly recommend it.

Alana wrote: "Finally got out to see Les Mis last night. Wow! Anne Hathaway was incredible, the kids were excellently cast and the whole thing flowed together so well that I had to keep reminding myself I wasn't..."

OMG Alana - I thought it was beautiful. I had only read the book beforehand so had no idea what to expect for the musical. I must confess that my dad & I cried like babies!! The ladies restroom afterwards was just a whole bunch of us at the mirrors trying to sort our faces out! Anne Hathaway was definitely a brilliant singer, but I had a soft spot for Javert from the book and damn Russell Crowe for just playing the character like that (tbh I should probably blame the original musical writers but hey-ho). I think it was the 'Empty Tables' song where I just gave up on trying to stop the tears ;)

message 232: by Alana (new)

Alana (alanasbooks) Funny you should say that about Russel Crowe, actually; I just wanted an interview with him and he said he didn't want to play it at first because he'd never seen on film, play, musical or anything any actor play that role and make his decisions make sense to him. He didn't understand or like the character. So he decided not to use any previous influences and make it his own because he wanted to actually understand what made him make his choices at the end of the story. One thing he said was in researching it, he went to Victor Hugo's house in Paris and learned that the characters for Javier and ValJean were actually inspired by the same man, who was a convict earlier in life but eventually became a policeman and was influential in starting undercover police work. Hugo split the character into two people to show different sides of humanity. Was fascinating.

Bringing back the chat here folks :D

I love talking about books and reading but my goodness, sometimes I need the opportunity to chat about something else too :D

My cat has taken to being polite when waking me up... little paw on the arm or face and a brief meow if needed. I've become such a light sleeper though that it's rarely needed nowadays (I remember when I could sleep for Britain if required) I just wish she coudl tell the time (it's a digital clock, how hard can that be ;D) before waking me up!
Although, on the plus side, I forgot to turn my alarm on for work and she woke me up before I would've been running late... she got extra cuddles for that one :P

message 238: by Alana (new)

Alana (alanasbooks) Lol, Hayley, I got the creepy image of your cat whispering into your ear, "It's 6:15, time to wake up," in a creepy, purring voice.

My dog was waking me up before my alarm, but she's actually waited until after I hear the alarm and start moving around. Unless, of course, I sleep in too long and she gets impatient to go outside.

I can proudly say that, thanks to youtube and vague memories of my grandma attempting to teach me, I have learnt the basics of knitting :D I am now getting started on a lovely red scarf... I started with 45 stitches across and now have 50 :O To think I was worried about dropping stitches and instead I'm gaining them??

Stefani - SpelingExpirt (speling_expirt) I've just started to learn to knit, I can't do it as much as I'd like because my wrists have never recovered from a sprain and they get strained really easily. I pick up stitches all the time.

message 242: by Alana (new)

Alana (alanasbooks) When I was in Mexico a few years back, my friend there taught me how to use this loom type thing, so now I don't so much knit or crochet as cheat... but I never gain or drop a stitch and all the stitches are even and I can whip out tons of scarves very quickly, which is great for Christmas presents :)

I haven't been doing a lot of knitting recently, now that the semester is over I'm trying to give my wrists a break so my tunnel carpal can heal. Does anyone spin yarn? The Tour de Fleece just started. My goal is to spin a little every day for it so I can finally really learn how to do it.

Alana (alanasbooks) I don't think I'm going to make my goal of ten books this year (which is sad, considering I'm on track to make my overall goal of 100 books) because there have just been so many recent books to read! But that's ok, at least I'm reading. I'll get to them eventually, right? Maybe? Beuhler?
