I'm away from the 22nd to the 26th November. "Frankenstein" is showing on 23 and 24th.

message 4752: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I can't believe you're going to the Opera house and not seeing an opera!

Hmmm. Good point. Though apart from Bizet, I am not a fan of opera.

message 4754: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) They're having a La Bohème Gala on New Years Eve. I love Puccini, I wanna go! :)

I still haven't seen Carmen live. But I really need to see it somewhere fabulous, it's such a great opera.

For shame! :)

message 4756: by [deleted user] (new)

I do not want to read Patricia Cornwell's dust! Leave me alone Goodreads! Ads are driving me crazy.

message 4757: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I know what you mean, I have an ad blocker at home but when I get to work I get all those annoying ads too. I especially hate the videos, so obnoxious!

message 4758: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah...I'm at work right now(not getting much work done obviously) & can't escape them.

message 4759: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments I just try to ignore them.

message 4761: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I'm glad I'm not the only one on here while at work! :)

message 4762: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments If I were not retired now, I'm sure I would be, too.

message 4763: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) When I'm retired I'm gonna read as much as you Jane. Over 200 books every year!!

message 4764: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments Reading is my main 'entertainment'. Movies and tv on the whole leave pretty much to be desired. And it's great, like today, we had the first snowfall of the season overnight so I've been hunkered down reading today.

message 4765: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) We were discussing how my sister is always interrupting me when I'm reading and she said that in her defense, I was always reading so she had no option. :)

I hope we get some snow this year, I have an offer of a ride from someone with a bigger car whenever it does so I won't mind getting to work. Or maybe preferably not getting to work!

How does one break an addiction with libraries and bookstores around? Plus, now with kindle, they are always open!

Pretty darned difficult!

message 4769: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments There is no cure for such an addiction. Give up.

(I sound like an enabler) :)

message 4770: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments no you aren't.

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments I don't know what this means exactly for Australians, but -- Amazon opens a Kindle store in Australia. http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2013/11/...

message 4773: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Not really a threat to Australian online book stores yet is it? Seeing as Australian Kindle owners can already download ebooks from the Amazon US site..can't they?

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Terri wrote: "Not really a threat to Australian online book stores yet is it? Seeing as Australian Kindle owners can already download ebooks from the Amazon US site..can't they?"
Yes...but not all books. Some authors don't have agreements that allow for Kindle books to be sold outside of the USA and Canada.

message 4775: by Bryn (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments Yes, seems limited, at first glance. I'll read more in The Australian tomorrow (they said).

message 4776: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) And sometimes Canada doesn't get them either. I've had quite a few not available here. Not that I have a Kindle but I notice every once in awhile when I'm looking books up.

message 4777: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments So those agreements would stick though. Even though it is .au?? Bryn is on the job. She'll get the answers.

BA - Book-a-Holics Anonymous?

We could put it after our name and pretend we have a qualification.

The BA would be a BA of literature. :)

Lol, or BA of history. Or BA of ancient military battles (that actually sounds like it would be a cool degree program).

message 4783: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments That's the beauty of it. We can make it whatever we want since it is a self appointed qualification.

It's genius.

Do we ever do challenges in this group? That could be fun...

message 4785: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I could look real important then. RBO and BA behind my name. As long as no one asks what they mean. :)

message 4786: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Nah. No challenges. Only the challenge to read the book of the month. ;)

Basically challenges are hard work to run and people can't seem to follow directions. lol. I ran a challenge once in another group and it nearly did my head in.

If they do just say "oh it means stuff you wouldn't understand"

I would say so. The problem is mostly with older books that were published before the ebook revolution.

I don't follow the hockey, I didn't even know he was that good. hahah

Yep. No escape from age when that happens. :)

I always find an indicator of people getting old is when they say their kids just finished highschool.
How can this be? We are all too young to have kids that age.
Since I don't have kids I don't notice people's kids are that age until I bump into people I went to school with.

Terri | 19576 comments Dawn wrote: "Yeah, thanks! ..."

You are welcome. You did follow some directions okay I suppose. :)

(NB: I'm not in the group anymore where we were doing the challenge. Wasn't the challenge that chased me away though. lol. But I still hate running them).

I find that groups that have challenges, it becomes their identity. To members, it becomes the only reason they post in the group after a while.
They lose interest in other aspects of groups and where they used to steal some time every day to chat in other threads, they come to use up their time reporting points and what not in a challenge and then have no time nor interest in posting in non challenge related conversations.

I would hate A&M to lose its identity has a HF group and become just another challenge group to members. :(

Who was is it, Darcy? As a sports fiend, I'm curious.

message 4795: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments It was that Brendan Shanahan.

Like Terri, I've no children, nor to any of my closest mates, so it's things like this that make me slam on the brakes and reflect on age.

lol. We swan around thinking we are still 25. So rude of people to age around us and make us realise our true age. :D

message 4799: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments So frustrating.
I downloaded the new Windows 8.1 yesterday (I was running Windows 8). It lost all the wireless drivers and I had to get Acer to give us the new drivers to make the wireless work.

Still, it has not been quite right since the update. Today it is awful.
POP server is dropping out and internet is really slow.

WHY! How long have these companies been at the computer and software game. This sort of thing shouldn't be happening. Especially with an upgrade from Win 8 to Win 8.1. That should be fairly simple for them to make happen without major glitches.

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments How can a search function possibly be so useless? I type in James C. Scott, click author, and I get Romeo & Juliet, followed by Little Women, Huck Finn, Macbeth and Treasure Island. I'm trying to find an anthropologist.

It's my main Goodreads gripe.
