That's odd. They need to differentiate it from the UK and say something like 'US Edition first published 2013'.

Hey guys, do you have problems receiving notifications on GR? I have realized that I do not get notified when someone comments for example on my status... Perhaps my account setting is somehow wrong?
Terri wrote: "They fixed hawk Quest. I voted for it successfully."I also voted for Hawk Quest successfully
mixal wrote: "Hey guys, do you have problems receiving notifications on GR? I have realized that I do not get notified when someone comments for example on my status... Double check your profile email settings.
I am fairly sure that I am getting all my notifications. As we all know from experience however, just because one person isn't having the problem, that doesn't mean the next person isn't.
Most bugs on GR are not blanket bugs. Where every member suffers from the bug.
For example...I have had a bug all day. A harmless one where my written comment stays in the comment box after I have posted it.
The comment posts properly, it is just that the words from that comment stay in the comment box instead of refreshing and leaving the comment box blank.

I think sometimes it must look rude when I do not respond while appearing somewhere else on GR...the problem is that perhaps I am just not getting notifications... :(
This is unrelated, but I find it quite interesting as a trend:http://www.theguardian.com/culture/20...
The 200 year misinterpretation of the first line of Beowulfhttp://www.independent.co.uk/arts-ent...
I'd read the actual academic paper yesterday, but am glad someone was able to write a concise less wordy explanation.
mixal wrote: "This is unrelated, but I find it quite interesting as a trend:http://www.theguardian.com/culture/20..."
That was a pretty good article. I've never thought that we should put out those blanket predictions or assume a whole generation is going to be a certain way.
There are always the unique or unusual groups of people that keep interesting trends alive.
I never thought the long book would die out with smaller attention spans. When you're a fantasy fan and you read 14 book series where every book is over 800 pages, you know that there is still an audience for epics.
I found that the length of the article was interesting. News(papers) generally put a cap on articles, but clearly this one was meant for the large book reader ;)
mixal wrote: "This is unrelated, but I find it quite interesting as a trend:http://www.theguardian.com/culture/20..."Thank you for posting this article; it was fascinating. The term "cowellized rihannisation" was only one of the many insightful observations. It is reassuring to know that the printed word is not only still alive, but that it is being celebrated by younger generations.

After much deliberation, I decided to vote for
Rome: The Art of War for historical fiction. I'd original entered a different one, but I hadn't read it, this one I had.
Oh that's better. It took me a while to seperate what was me speaking and what was you speaking when it was all over the place. ;D

Man, they just went through an earthquake and now this.
Terri wrote: "My thoughts are with those in the Philippines.http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/wo..."
Oh, that is awful! Hopefully they will be able to ride out the storm well.
You'd suspect they were written just to get into the comp. Yes, I thought the pimple, but then I thought the "quarks and atomic nuclei."
This is completely random, but it is a bid sad that GR does not use it's potential. It has such valuable data! It seems that it uses our ratings only to promote Amazone books. And even the algorithm it uses is completely off! It could identify people from all over the world that have similar taste, or recommend groups with the same interest. These are really easy things to do, but there doesn't seem to be the will to do it. I do not say that it should be in some intrusive way, but damn, I am sure this platform is a source of quite a bit of income for them so they should take a better care of it. For example, I have found out about this group by directly searching for it. It might be a good question for the polls - how do people find out about this group...
I suppose they figure we, the hoi polloi, set up thegroups, so it's up to us to search them out. I'd say making money for themselves is their driving force...
mixal wrote: "For example, I have found out about this group by directly searching for it. It might be a good question for the polls - how do people find out about this group......"
I find some people find this group via me. :D
That sounds egomaniacal, but hear me out. It really isn't.
The more reviews we all leave on HF books, the more people who read those reviews and then check out our profiles. Do the 'Compare Books' thing.
Then they scroll down and see what groups you are in. I am only in one book group. This one. (the other two groups I am in a Goodreads Feedback and Librarians).
If they don't see I am in this group. The other way they find it is by the above steps, only they then send me a friend request or 'follow me'.
Once they do either of those, they see me posting in A&M in my updates and find it that way.
I see it happen quite often. It is another positive to leaving reviews. You can make friends and meet new people when they discover a mutual interest in this genre or a book.

About to log off though. Shall check later. I still laugh about last years.
Dawn wrote: "Did you see last years winner?? Because we're an all ages group I'll put it in here [spoilers removed]"Oh God, Dawn...I just spat tea on my screen!
Remember I said I was going to see the National Theatre's filmed version of "Frankenstein"? Well, apparently, the first one is screening at the Sydney Opera House. *squeals and runs around excitedly* Seeing something at the Opera House has been on my Bucket List for YEARS!!!

I second that, happy.
Thank you to all the brave men & women who have served.

Thank you to all the brave men & women who have served.
Thank you to the veterans! This is a day that I especially my father and uncles who served during WWII and the men I corresponded with during Viet Nam. You are all in my heart--still.KILLING KENNEDY was a disappointment, except for Rob Lowe's performance as President Kennedy.
I know this is off the Remembrance day theme we have going on but this video of the Albuquerque Hot Air Balloon Fiesta is gorgeous http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8YaMK...
I'm mentioning this for those who haven't noticed yet. The semi finals are open to vote for in the Goodreads Choice Awards. Not that there are any books that we would put on our shelves here but still fun.
Margaret wrote: "Remember I said I was going to see the National Theatre's filmed version of "Frankenstein"? Well, apparently, the first one is screening at the Sydney Opera House. *squeals and runs around excite..."Excited for you, Margaret! :D
Oh for heavens sake. Those Hist Fic semi finals nominees are mostly a joke. Pretty much all romance books and shouldn't be in the HF category. one is even fantasy!I don't think I can vote in the darn category.
Phew. I am caught up in all the threads. :)Three days away from the book group doing lots of farm work and I missed out on a bunch of fun conversations.

Goodness knows what I'll have to catch up on after 5 days in Sydney.

I voted for Burial Rites--best of the bunch -- and I only gave it a 3***.
Semper Fidelis was my write-in on Round One and of course was knocked out.
I agree w/ your assessment, Terri!
I thought about voting for
Paris as it is probably the only one of those I would read...but then I don't like Rutherfurd so I decided maybe I shouldn't.I feel quite disgusted that a fan of the genre (me in this case) can only see one book to read out of that bunch.
It is the HF category and we all read HF. Surely we should be swimming in choices...:(
Terri wrote: "I thought about voting for

Who chooses these books, anyway? Pretty much all look pretty miserable to me. I had to scrounge on the ones I did choose.
The Girl Who Loved Camellias: The Life and Legend of Marie Duplessis I did write-in for the bio category and that got knocked out after Round One.
Bryn wrote: "As with last year, I can spot a few I'd vote against."HAHA! Yes, me too! It is a shame we can't vote against. take votes off books. ;)
Jane wrote: "Who chooses these books, anyway? Pretty much all look pretty miserable to me. I had to scrounge on the ones I did choose. ..."They go off the books that are most added to shelves and rated.
I don't think they understand the genre enough to make sure the right books are going into it. :\
There are some books written by women for women there that I would still class as HF even though they are not something I would read, but there are definitely books there that should be in included in the romance genre or the fantasy genre.
Makes me feel like throwing my toys out of the cot.
