The bog people poems: had to do them in class, but they were groovy. Very... northern tribal. Also known for his translation of Beowulf. I wished it were more like his bog people poems.
Bryn wrote: "Oh, Seamus Heaney died. Sorry, obits again. Damn -- I wanted him to re-translate Beowulf. Liked his bog-people poems."@Bryn, Which of his books contains the 'bog-people poems'? I'm checking the library right now.
Right. This is my old school book: Poems, 1965-1975. Boggy poems taken from collections A Northern Hoard and North. Thinking of 'Strange Fruit', 'The Tolland Man', 'The Grauballe Man','Punishment', 'Bog Queen'. Other titles like 'Viking Dublin' might drag Terri in.
The library has tons of his books, but most are poetry collections and you can't tell. I did put his rendering of Antigone, The Burial at Thebes: A Version of Sophocles' Antigone on hold. I've always liked that play.
Terri wrote: "our Target is not your Target and I would be very surprised if an ad campaign from that long ago in the US for a store that we don't have would end up influencing our slang. :)"That is very interesting (and a very good point, of course).
Fascinating that both countries came to the same conclusion!

Oh Terri I have another: crook as rookwood. This one may not be national though, not sure. But you must be sick if you are as crook as rookwood. Rookwood is possibly the largest cemetery in the country. Huge. Fascinating place, where they actually do tours. They use to have a beautiful old section at Sydney's central station just for the trip to rookwood when they would take the coffins out for funerals. Great bit of history actually.
Crook as rookwood--I like that. It sounds like an interesting place for a day trip. I am crook and have dog's disease, ligury, la grippe, dropsy and possibly milk leg. I am sick as a dog from coughing my head off. What do cows get when they eat bitter weeds , other than bitter milk?
Nick wrote: "We have the expression 'sick as a dog' if that helps?"haha. :D..We have that one too!...although we say 'crook as a dog'.

I don't know what cows get when they eat bitter weeds..

Mark wrote: "http://www.ayrshirepost.net/ayrshire-... could lead to a lot of new discoveries and better understanding of all our history."If this becomes the premise for a future James Bond flick I think I'm going to lose my head. lol
Terri wrote: "Yes, Linda is American. She forgot to mention cooties in her line up. :)"I tried to ignore the cootie comment, but I brought it upon myself. For the record, I do not have cooties. Cooties are a STD. In fact, I am completely cured of all maladies today and promise not to complain and whine ever again. It's amazing what healing powers the mere mention of cooties have. Lol
Now, I never knew that. I've always thought of them as just some mysterious disease, not specifying anything. Do you remember the folded paper items we'd make as kids--I guess you could call them a form of origami, "cootie catchers"? Do kids still do that?I'm pretty much cured today--I guess the mention of cooties did that to me, too. :)
Yes, I know what you are talking about--we called them paper airplanes. I am so pleased that you are cured.

(only they were four beaks that came together).
If that's what we're talking about.....we never called them cootie catchers. Not that I remember what we did call them. And since when did cootie have anything to do with STD's. Is that a new thing? Did the word evolve while I wasn't paying attention??
We have never had the word cooties over here, we only ever saw it used on tv and I guess some Australians may use it from that, but I have never heard them.I got the idea from tv that cooties were nits (head lice), but I guess that could mean the other kind of lice too. ;) The 'down there' lice. Which are a STD of sorts.

Cooties in New Zealand is head lice only. Specifically the eggs or nits.
I never equated cooties with lice, cooties were just germs. Like in grade school, all the boys had cooties, like they were icky. Though the word is a bit old-fashioned now.

Those were simply Boy Germs to us.
I see the Goodreads Brownheads have changed.Anyone who hasn't uploaded an image to their profile avatar, who has the standard brown head, now has a much nicer brown head on their profile picture.

They've got different hairstyles. Guys & girls I think. What if they're indeterminate?

I was thinking they had hairstyles before. Were they not boy and girl? Hard to notice for the ugly brown colour. :)
OMG. I saw these pictures and laughed so hard my eyes were watering and I couldn't stop them.(NB* Some of them look very rude, but they aren't. It is all the photo angle. They are all clean photos. Some are hard to work out at first, but when you stare long enough you spot the optical illusion)

I burst out laughing at "What is that thing coming out of your dress"
Funny stuff. :D That 'Just a Beautiful landscape photo' (the lady standing in front of the view with the dress and an unfortunate knee shadow) just makes my eyes water.
Bryn wrote: "They've got different hairstyles. Guys & girls I think. What if they're indeterminate? "There seems to be three different profiles. Boy's, Girl's and unisex. I saw a short messy haired one today.
huh. I never realised how conservative the old brown heads were until you mentioned the unisex one. Good to see this option for members.
I prefer you get a picture of any kind so we can identify you from the crowd of brown heads. lol. :D
Well, I don't know how to add one, so someday when my son is visiting, he can put one on. I can see if I can figure it out, but I don't promise anything.
For Jane or anybody wanting to change their brown head to an image (any image on your computer. Doesn't have to be a photo of yourself, just anything, your garden, a landscape..anything)..here's how to do it.*Go to your Profile Page. (the page where your bookshelves are etc)
*Next to your name at the top of screen on the left hand side of the Page click on small words - EDIT PROFILE
* On the page it takes you to. On right hand side. Click on - DELETE/CHANGE IMAGE (or words to that affect. They are underneath your brown head image on that page).
* After clicking on that. Click on - BROWSE
* Your can now select from any pictures you have in 'PICTURES' on your computer. Choose one. Click on - OPEN (or ADD or OK..whatever it says on your computer)
* This will send you back to the GR page. Now click on - UPLOAD.
Your picture will now appear as a profile avatar and replace your brown head.
