Terri | 19576 comments You're welcome, Jane.
I remember when Win8 first came out. In my country there were barely any computers for quite a while that had the touchscreens to work it.
Then Touchscreens starting arriving in stores and it was advised for people not to buy these early models as many were not designed (internally) to work the program properly. I think there was even a recall on some models because the system simply could not run Win8.
It is just now that Desktops and Laptops are appearing that are designed to run Win8.

I advise anybody looking at a new computer with touchscreen and Win8 installed to make sure they are getting the very latest release models.

I did some exhaustive research before I bought my new laptop on the weekend. :)

The worse he gets, the more I think it must have something to do with being a Canadian. ;D

At least Miley Cyrus isn't Canadian! Thank your lucky stars for that.

For the moment [I'll cross finger & toes] all seems to be working! :) I do wish they had an alternate to the green bookcase for status & shelves.

Terri | 19576 comments My status (on my profile) doesn't seem to be working.
As in, my comments in Group are not showing up on my profile today.

I have also not been receiving all my email notifications over the last couple days.

I am thinking perhaps GR did an update again and certain things in certain browsers went haywire.
I have sent them an email with my issues.

I was just trying to figure out how come you weren't showing up on my Home page. I hope they fix it, it's quite annoying not to see what you've been saying!

Thank you very much, Terri. I think that pretty much answers all the questions I had, so I appreciate it. I'm usually the last person I know to switch over to new technology. Stubborn I guess. I'm starting to think I'm the last person on earth without an iphone.:)

Terri | 19576 comments I don't have an iPhone. I have an LG. Hubby has a Blackberry, but that came with his job.
You will be pleased to know that outside of the US the iPhone isn't as big. :) Samsung and Nokia are bigger than Apple worldwide.

message 3813: by [deleted user] (last edited Aug 27, 2013 05:40PM) (new)

Well it's certainly good to know I'm not the only one without one. My friends laugh at me when I pull out my old school flip phone.
I have no idea what that VMA performance was about, but I'm embarrassed for her. She's been acting like an arse for awhile now, though. But still...*shakes head*

Terri | 19576 comments They are handy for emergencies.
Well..take today for example..I was really angry at my husband for yet again forgetting to do something. Do I have to wait until he's home? No. I go into a flurry of angry texting until he feels he needs to ring to apologise and then I bend his ear for a while.
Imagine if I were not able to release that pent up rage so easily? I'd have high blood pressure. :D

Terri | 19576 comments Still don't have any comments showing up on my profile.
I got a reply form GR hours ago saying that they knew of the problem but they thought they had fixed it. They asked me to check again. I replied hours ago that nope, still nothing.
I have not heard back. I guess they have finished work for the day in the US.

I even tried commenting on my profile (down the bottom where you can comment on your own profile). That did not show up on my updates either.

Amazon must frown upon Australians. They've got their special ops out. Run to the hills Margaret!

Nick Smith (RoguesNest) | 90 comments On the subject of Windows 8, I have it on my desktop with classic shell installed on top: http://www.classicshell.net/

It gives you back your start menu and all familiar Windows tools, and is fully customisable. Very useful if you don't have a touch screen.

That Classic Shell does look interesting.

I see they are coming out with Windows Blue soon. I wonder if we who have Win8 get the 8.1 as an update. I certainly hope it isn't an upgrade you only get if it comes installed on a new buy computer.

message 3832: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Aug 28, 2013 01:33AM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Looking into it. I think it comes as an update. That's good. i would hate the idea of spending big on a new laptop only to have the Windows program become outdated within months.
The update comes in October.
http://www.theverge.com/2013/8/27/466...

That article says Windows 8.1 allows to boot to desktop. That's strange, because the Windows on my laptop allows me to boot to desktop.
When i turn my laptop on, it is the desktop that it logs into. It doesn't log straight to the Tile Windows screen.

Nor do I. I don't have a lot of techie things, but I do have Windows 8 with a touchscreen, and so far it's okay, but I haven't had to play too much with it. The Microsoft Office applications are testing my resolve to not defenestrate inanimate objects though.

I don't even have ANY kind of cell phone.

Nor do I, Jane. The money is a factor but my landline serves my purpose.

message 3836: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments Absolutely! And, I don't whether it's true or not--if the power goes out, landlines work and cellphones don't.

message 3837: by Lia (new)

Lia (lia_mb) | 638 comments Yes, the old rotary and touchtone phones will work even when the powers goes out. "The older" phones meaning the one without separate AC transformer. For example (in US) is AT&T 210W Corded Telephone.

message 3838: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Cellphones still work when the power goes out. They run seperate to the power grid.
I have to keep an old 'non powered' landline phone in the cupboard for power outages, because, as Lia says, if one has a powered landline phone ie a cordless, you can't use them in a black out.

With just a hint of irony, I have a propane generator that powers my house during outages, but no cell phone service – ever.

Now let's see if my comments update.

message 3844: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Aug 28, 2013 06:05PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Since I live in a rural environment, and blackouts are common, we'd be lost without access to a good generator.
Our house is run by electric pressure pumps (since we are in the bush and not on town water supply) and without power to those pumps we have no showers, toilets or water.
Luckily we don't have to buy a generator. My parents have two good ones and their farm is not far from ours. So if there's a prolonged power outage we knock on their door. :)
Our first priority in time of blackout..save the meat!!!

message 3846: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I don't even think they are working on it. Or they would have it fixed by now.

How annoying, it is just your book updates.

message 3849: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments Are you sure it's not The Thief's Tale? Also, his official Goodreads page is S.J.A. Turney. I'm not sure why there are two.

message 3850: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) There are actually a couple extra profiles for that author. They are just spelt wrong. Neither have any books or fans so they will eventually be deleted in the sweeps GR's does of the system.
