If you use an imap email account (I use Mac mail) you keep the email on a server, just download a copy to your computer. Then if the computer dies you just synch the new one to the "cloud" mail.
Or you can use gmail or equivalent which is all web based.
Apparently the NSA stores all your emails anyway, so no worries about "security." Ha!

Terri | 19576 comments Pah! the NSA can have my stuff. I have nothing to hide...except for the...oh..no..they can have that..;)

I use Gmail for some stuff (and I was relieved when I lost all of my emails off my dead computer that I had a lot of important contacts still safe and sound on my Gmail), but I use Windows Live Mail for most personal and business emails. I hate having Win' Live connected and backed up to Microsoft, so I don't have a Windows Live account connected to my PC email accounts.

I used to save emails a long time ago. I will have to try and recall how I did it.

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Tell me what you do working the college games.

Thank you for the good luck you wished for my son. His training is very strict. He has four children, no wife, a maid with a broken leg, and a house dog that is not potty trained. I have been at his house keeping the children, washing, cooking, cleaning and shoveling **** since Friday. I am wiped out. No pun intended.

I feel for you, Bobby. But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't completely stoked that college football & the NFL are about to begin. I'm football starved.:)

Are you liking Windows 8? I'm going to start saving for a new computer. Mine is getting slower & slower...so it's only a matter of time. If I disappear for awhile, that will probably be the reason.

message 3769: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) From what I hear, as long as you have a touch screen...Windows 8 is great.

Yeah...it's lousy on lap tops and just plain doesn't work on desk tops.

message 3771: by [deleted user] (new)

Rat nuts!(I learned that one from you Margaret.lol) I've never had anything but a desktop & technological leaps scare me. I like my mouse. I guess I'll just have to accept the touch screen thing.

Only too happy to help expand your vocabulary, Derek. :D

Windows 8 isn't too bad on lap tops. Mine is okay. But I have heard from our IT tech at work that it flat out does not work on desk tops.

message 3773: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) It didn't work all that well on the laptop either. But there are a few programs you can download to make it work better with non-touchscreens. So you can keep working with a mouse. :)

message 3775: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah...that's why I was curious about it. I'm technologically challenged, so many of these things are over my head, but I've heard a lot of negative things about #8. The guy who installed the new desk tops where I work told us to avoid Windows 8, for now anyways.
I thank you for your expansion of my vocabulary. I've been wearing that one out ever since I saw you post that around here somewhere.:)

Windows 8 is okay on my lap tap...just not sure if the quirks my lap top has is Windows or the lap top itself. I always seem to get idiosyncratic appliances. :p

I went to that when I was little. Step dad is an Irish musician and used to drag us all over Brittany after those pipes...

I currently live in the Channel Islands, so manage a trip to Saint Malo and the surrounding area a few times a year. I love Breton food, music and people.

Oh yes. I'm trying to find alternate ways of doing things. I did find no substitute for the green bookcase to change status or put on shelves--oh well...
I guess this wonderful 6 year old computer's trying to tell me something...

message 3795: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Hi Derek,
For me Windows 8 is cool so far. I am not experiencing the problems others have spoken of. I think you just have to have a computer that is designed for the new technology.
I would hate to have Windows without a touchscreen. When I was out there shopping for a new computer on the weekend I was amazed at how many computers still don't have a touchscreen...or if they have a touchscreen they don't have the capacity yet to be running Win 8 properly.
I know a lot of people would buy these computers that have Win 8 installed and then uninstall it and install their current Windows 7 instead. If a person has their Windows 7 license number that should be easy to do..

I love the interface. It is fun. There are some things I cannot do..or have not worked out how to do. That may come in time. While I learn though, it still has the regular Desktop that you are used to with all previous Windows.
You don't have to use the Touchscreen element of Win8 at all. You can just opt for the regular desktop (The same as Windows 7 and all previous Windows) and use the computer from that.
Windows 8 still works with a mouse. Although, I don't use one. I haven't used a mouse for about 6 years. Since i swapped from desktops to Laptops I only use the laptop's touchpad.

For now. I am definitely a Win8 convert. It is pretty and quick and easy to access (for me on the pc I have bought).
Having been using a Tablet for a couple years I love having the touchscreen. I hate screens I can't touch. :)

When my husband and I were at Epcot Center years ago, at the Canadian Pavilion we had a stew that was out of this world. I still remember it to this day. I still don't know what it was.

Terri | 19576 comments Jane,
Your problem might have a quick answer.
I would highly recommend going to the Goodreads feedback Group; http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/1 and posting about your problem in the 'Bugs' section.
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_...

You seem to have a serious issue there that may not be your computer and the techies in Feedback may be able to help you straight away work out what is going on.

You don't have to stay a member of the Feedback group. Many GR members join to post their problem and then when it is solved they leave. Then rejoin if they have another problem..and so on and so forth.

message 3800: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Okay, first things first here.......I completely deny that anything so annoying as Justin Beiber ever came from Canada. Especially now that he's turned into such a nasty, miserable, selfish little twat!!

I don't have a clue what kind of stew they would serve as Canadian, unless it was something Native Indian. Though that makes no sense.....I'd expect salmon, poutine and bannock to define us.
