I guess.
I live in Italy, where the weather is better, usually..

That's part of it. In Italy there's a stricter policy concerning firearms, but still these days they're working on a law against violence on women. It's happening a lot.

Apparently so.

Lia (lia_mb) | 638 comments One article I read said the shooters did it because they were bored... .

message 3706: by Linda (new)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Just heard the same.

message 3707: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah...apparently they were bored & wanted to see how it felt to kill someone. We're talking about small town teenagers. It's beyond understanding. Such a waste of life & so very sad. They're going to be prosecuted as adults, which is justifiable in this case in my opinion.

message 3708: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Yeah it is pretty shocking stuff over here in Australia right now. Since we don't have a gun culture it is frightening and foreign to us that one of our young athletes could go to a country (not a war torn or third world country) on a Baseball Scholarship and then just be gunned down like that for no reason.

But we don't judge you all by events like this. You, as Americans, should know that. Not fair to judge you all because of some rotten apples.

message 3709: by Steven (new)

Steven Malone | 65 comments Thanks Terri and Derek.

Not all of us are like that. Most don't raise our children to make those kinds of decisions. And, not all gun owners here are like that. And I agree this was an adult crime and these thugs were near enough to adulthood in every way but 'law'. They should be tried as adults.

What a tragedy for all concerned.

message 3710: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I am glad they will be tried as adults. This wasn't some stupid little kids playing with Daddy's gun and doing a stupid thing. This was an adult crime.

message 3711: by Bobby (new)

Bobby (bobbej) | 1375 comments The big deal here is how the press is going to handle this "hate" crime so soon after the Trayvon Martin fiasco. Heard the Australian government has asked for a boycott of U.S. goods until there is justice. This should be quite a ride. The kids were "bored" so they shot a jogger in the back. Unbelievable.

message 3712: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I haven't heard anything about a boycott backed by our government. I'll look into that. That isn't an appropriate response.

message 3713: by [deleted user] (new)

People around here are shocked too. Random murders are very uncommon in small town Oklahoma. Usually it's domestic dispute murders or drug deals gone wrong & things like that. Unfortunately, I don't think there is any doubt that our gun culture played a role. No doubt in my mind anyway.
And yes, anyone, regardless of age, who is capable of driving around randomly shooting at people needs to be dealt with like a grown adult.

message 3714: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Aug 21, 2013 05:10PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I looked into it. It isn't the Australian Government who has said to boycott the U.S. It is one politician. He was Deputy Prime Minister back when our country banned auto and semi auto guns. So this gun crime against one of our citizens has him very p#ssed off.
I seriously doubt our Australian Government would ever promote a boycott as a result of this crime. Don't worry guys. :-) We have excellent trade relations with the US. It would be stupid to damage that.

I have seen world maps on ostrich eggs before (possibly it was Antiques Roadshow). Obviously not as old as this one. It is incredible. The 'Here Be Dragons' bit is cool.

I have always thought it awful that historically significant pieces can find their way into private ownership. So it is wonderful to see that here is an owner who wanted to do the right thing. Research the item and share it with the world.

message 3718: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 728 comments I agree with Terri. It is highly unlikely our government would boycott that. Even if it was appropriate, which I don't believe it is, our government is fairly spineless when it comes to that sort of thing. While the Indonesian government uses Australian Taxpayers money to build their defence forces, they in turn do little to curb terrorism. So no stress, it won't happen. Wow that was a bit of an outburst! So done on politicians at the moment while this election goes on.

Dawn (caveatlector) Holla people. No more talk on guns if you don't mind.
I have seen exactly this conversation ruin a friendship and pretty much break up a group I really loved.

So any conversation on gun control will be immediately deleted as of now. As well as several of the comments already posted!

I'm sorry but it's just too much of a hot button topic.

Hahaha!! Oh mate. Thanks for the morning laugh. :D
I'm over these bloody pollies at the moment too. If I see the word (?) K'Rudd one more time I'm going to spew. I am trying to switch off from the election. Since we don't vote for a Prime Minister, we vote for our local, and I will be voting for the person who best represents our area, I don't give a crap about Abbott or Rudd.

Terri | 19576 comments Can't believe it. I think I caught Darcy's computer disease.
My laptop would not let me log on. Not wrong username, but User Profile not recognised. Sent it to the techies this morning and they will be able to get passed the password issue. They said though, that this issue usually means your hard drive is packing it in.
I have suspected this lately. Laptop has been freezing under load these last few months.

So they will open my laptop so I can get my data off and I am about to ring around for quotes on a new laptop. Damn it. I hate these nasty expensive surprises.

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Eggcept for the bad news, this group has had me in stitches. Maybe the news as I understand it will take your minds off contagious computer crap and shark attacks: The bears are coming out of the forest because they are out of Charmin. Our president is color blind. The accidental tourist's ship left without him. The prison will not provide the shooter a sex change operation, but they may relent and call him 'Chelsea.' The best news is that universities may soon be graded for student loan purposes. The IRS will do the grading, doling, and oversight. What a world! I am sorry about Terri's computer.

Terri because my husband and I are now considered : " of no fixed address " or " homeless ", we have been removed from the electoral roll. No point in voting where we used to live. But fair dinkum, I wouldn't feed them let alone vote for any of this lot.

Hope you all have a great weekend. Mine will involve food, reading and food. These are a few of my favourite things, hahaha.

Ah! I was confused for a second there. I haven't seen this psychiatrist story but given the generally grim tone of the news I'm assuming it's an unhappy and/or disturbing one?

I usually like to vote. have a voice and all that, but this election is the first one for a long, long time that I would not vote in if I were given a choice. :)

I hope you had some nice food this weekend. I am about to partake of a nice lamb roast with roast veg and mint sauce...yum..*rubs tummy*.
Even better. Hubby is making it and i don't have to do anything. :D

Terri | 19576 comments Well turns out my hard drive is cactus. No good. Dead. Gone.
Buying a new computer and saying goodbye to the last four years of data on my old laptop was the outcome.

I hate having lost all my emails and email addresses.

New laptop is nice though. :) Nice to finally be on Windows 8 and touchscreen. Since I use my Tablet all the time I am used to touchscreen and I hated using the laptop because it was not.
I am all 'future girl' now with my fancy space age laptop.

Just for saying the obvious: a nice back up on an external hard disk from time to time, since you're so girl-of-the-future and all...? ;)

message 3744: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 728 comments Ouch Terri, I would hate to lose lose all that. We are contemplating a change, by getting rid of the laptop altogether and both of us having tablets, but buying a large apple screen and using that for tv as well in the van. They have great screens, which would be great for my husbands photography as well. My god, I love baked dinners. Baked everything actually. Yum, enjoy.

Now Happy.....about them donuts!!!!!! Yuuuuuuuuuum, hahaha.

My food Terri has been mushed up broccoli, with chilli, garlic and ricotta cheese wrapped in flaky pastry. Then curried beef in the same. I now have a freezer full, more yum. Now the broccoli mush gets cream and poured over my pasta, so that's me for food tonight. Enjoy

Don't worry. I have a 2Tb External Hard Drive now. I just never back up my emails (can one even back up emails to a hard drive easily?) or write down my email addresses. Just something I never think to do.
