No freakin Way! For reals?

Terri | 19576 comments Oh wait. Panic over.
It is a friendly.
http://www.news.com.au/sport/football...

I thought they had drawn the World Cup Pools already and we were in the pool with Brazil AGAIN!

message 3606: by [deleted user] (new)

I thought the Aussies must have played them to a draw in a friendly. Should have known better:)

message 3607: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Hey. We have beaten Brazil before. :-) In a friendly. I just can't find it online.

message 3608: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey, I can't talk. If we've ever beaten Brazil, I'm not aware of it.

message 3609: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Results from friendlies are harder to find online. It s entirely possible you may have beaten or had a draw with them too.
(They usually field their second tier team for friendlies. Lol!)

message 3610: by [deleted user] (last edited Aug 07, 2013 09:51PM) (new)

Yeah...we might have beaten their 18 & under C-Team. Maybe....one day

message 3611: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments They are beatable. If only they stopped acting like little girls and stopped falling over with fake pushes and injuries. Trying to milk penalties.
I'm proud my team doesn't play like that. We play like men. :-)

message 3612: by [deleted user] (new)

Hahaha! Lol. That gets on my nerves too. Our Yanks play like men who are clumsy instead of injured :)

Terri | 19576 comments Falling over and holding an ankle or shin like they've just been shot makes me want to walk from the room. I hate that about soccer.

message 3614: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah..it gets to the point of being pathetic. They'll carry a guy off on a stretcher & the next thing you know, he's doing sprints on the sidelines.

message 3615: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Yep. Soccer should do something about that kind of crap.

message 3616: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments I'm looking out my window thinking:
'Oh kitty, chasing after that wee pest is going to bring nothing but disaster and pain, not to mention toxic tears to your eyes.'

Very happy to say that so far, cat's been far back enough while stalking a little (not baby though) skunk around the common area. If skunk is smart, it will go to ground before the sun rises any higher.

message 3617: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Do cats really make it a habit of stalking and harassing skunks?
Does one let their cat back into the house for a week if it has been 'skunked'?

message 3618: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments Yes, cats think its either a new friend or figure it's a rodent and fair game. Most people buy a de-scenting product to remove the stench. I had a skunk just up and die in a shed once. The exterminator (the smell was so bad we thought it must be a nest - never thought about deceased) just poured ammonia on the spot (after carcass removal).

It isn t a giveaway over here as it doesn't show up when I click on the book.

I will mention it in the freebies thread - paperback and hardback

Terri | 19576 comments A Message from Goodreads. Posted in their Feedback area.

We will be down for maintenance tonight starting at 9 PM PST for a large database migration. The outage will be about 2.5 hours, but we'll be getting a lot of work done! We really apologize for any inconvenience.

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments A good story: an elderly crippled gentleman walking with a cane opened and held the exit door for me yesterday at the Health Plex. I said, "You don't have to hold the door for me." He replied, "Yes I do." I recognize a gentleman when I see one!

It's all about equality now. You should have held the door for the poor crippled old gentleman. Hahaha! :D

Terri | 19576 comments Has anyone noticed any changes on GR yet? After all, in their notification for the site down for maintenance they said but we'll be getting a lot of work done! ."

Is it anything we can see? I haven't had a chance to look anywhere but in group yet.

message 3632: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I've checked around and I can't see any changes.
I am wondering if they have now implemented the change to 'other editions' and 'People also read' that we were talking abut the other day.
When only members of the Goodreads Feedback Group could see this new layout on a book's profile page.
For members of the GR Feedback Group the 'other editions' had been moved from top right corner to small covers under the books blurb (in the books details) and 'readers also enjoyed' moved up into the top right hand corner where 'other editions' used to be.
Non members of the GR Feedback Group could not see that change.

message 3633: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) The other editions/recommended stuff changed earlier this week for me. I don't see any changes from yesterday to today though.

You know me better than that. Of course I was trying to get the door for him. There are people there who need someone to listen. Some need to change swimming lanes . Some want the radio turned off (or on). Some need help with life belts. I try to do these little courtesies for them necause it makes me feel good.

The recommended books and the alternate editions sections switched places the other day. Today they were back in their original positions.

Guns of the South

Has anyone read this?

Wow! I see it's a favorite amongst alternate history lovers. Maybe Mark can shed some light on it for us.

message 3638: by Nate (new)

Not read it no, but I think nearly all Harry Turtledove books are alternate history.
Except for his latest Roman one.

Interesting. I'm sure Teutoburg Forest and what happened to the legions there would be a great setting for a historical fiction, but the reviews seem kinda shaky :/ I can't turn away from that one I posted, though. I'll probably buy it.

message 3642: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments It was ok; not worth buying, but you could check it out from your library, Nate.

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments So, since laptops are, as it turns out, much less expensive than they used to be, I was able to upgrade my life. Probably it helped that it's back to school time and they've lowered the prices a bit more too.

Who knew there were touch screen laptops? Not I...I've played with it for 10 minutes, but so far, I'm loving it.

Not so much a thought as a commentary that.

message 3648: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Much, much less than before. I noticed the prices of external hard drives are very low too. You can get 1 TB for $70. So low compared to a couple years ago.
