David Bowie's early stuff is definitely classic. He's one of a kind.

Hey Nate. Are you familiar with Kurt Vile? I saw him at SXSW a couple of years ago & have been hooked ever since. Smoke Ring For My Halo is one of my favorite albums of the last few years.

@Jane Hah. I love 'Salome' too. Handel's Julius Caesar, and much else by Handel.
Russians. Prince Igor by Borodin.
Benjamin Britten, Gustav Mahler.

@Derek kind words on my David Bowie craze.

Favourite Mongolian group: Yat-Kha, album tuva.rock.

Terri | 19576 comments next question.

Daggiest most uncool album you will admit to ever having owned?

To answer myself...I don't think I have ever owned/bought an uncool album, but if there is one, it would be Whitesnake.
I bought it for this song.

In the still of the night!!!!!. Yes, I must admit I owned that one too. The 80's were a strange time.

In the Whitesnake vid? Yeah, that is a classic scene of the 80's pop music revolution.

No Terri. I never stooped so low as to buy any Milli Vanilli. I had those frauds sniffed out from the get go. And let me add that I crushed that Vanilla Ice cassette into a million pieces within a week of buying it.:)

I never heard of him and looked him up. I thought his name was a corny pseudonym until I read his dad gave him that punny name--Kurt Vile = Kurt Weill,[ pronounced the same as Vile], the German-born Broadway composer. I like "September Song" (Broadway), "Mack the Knife", "Alabama Song" and others of his Berlin Theater songs (Weimar Republic-era). Weill left Germany and came to the U.S. when Hitler came to power.

message 3574: by [deleted user] (new)

I thought the same thing, Jane. I didn't think Kurt Vile could possibly be his real name. When I first heard it, I instantly thought of Johnny Rotten.

message 3575: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments Johnny Rotten = John Lydon, wasn't it?

Yep. Sex Pistols.

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments My younger son took me on a Jeep ride and had one song he wanted me to hear: HAPPY TRAILS TO YOU. I don't know the hard rock group who slipped that one mellow song into that album, but it was beautiful.

I am glad to see I am not the only classical music lover here. Classical is my love and the main genre for my listening. I also like Musicals, some film music(mostly from the swashbuckling older movies) and Exotica- Les Baxter, Martin Denny, etc.

Jane | 3480 comments I just looked it up; Dale Evans wrote it. As far as what I could make out, Van Halen was the name of that rock group you heard.

So do I. I have about 3 different versions of Korngold's Violin Concerto.

message 3590: by Anne (new)

Anne (spartandax) | 797 comments I have the Heifetz one. I also have him doing the Brahms and another of my favorites, the Mario Castelnuevo-Tedesco violin concerto called "Il Profete" GORGEOUS!!!
And Bryn, I too love "Tristan."

message 3591: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments Another favorite is the Barber Violin Concerto -- beautiful!! I'll have to search out the Castelnuevo-Tedesco; I thought of him as mainly classical guitar.

Have you ever heard Katchaturian's Violin Concerto? Another of my favorites. Even though I majored in Piano in college I have a very soft spot for the violin.

message 3596: by Jane (last edited Aug 04, 2013 05:21PM) (new)

Jane | 3480 comments No, I'll have to investigate that one too.

I love the Schoenberg 'Verklärte Nacht' sextet. It's been arranged for string orchestra. It was written pre-atonalism. It always reminds me so much of the "Tristan" music.

I have season tickets to our local symphony. I would say my favorite is composers are Beethoven, with Mahler or Mendelson coming next

I also really enjoy late '50s - early '60s folk - Limeliters, Kingston Trio, Weavers, PP&M etc

Another beautiful one, Jane. I wish Schoenberg had stuck to that type of music.
And Happy, as a youngster, I had season tickets to the Cincinnati Symphony for many years back in the 50's and early 60's.

message 3600: by Jane (last edited Aug 05, 2013 10:54AM) (new)

Jane | 3480 comments So do I!! The only one of his atonal stuff I like is Erwartung. That's fairly short; I'd get a headache if it went on and on like Wagner.

Another pre-atonal one I love is Gürrelieder.

We used to have tickets to the Binghamton Philharmonic, but since they changed venues to one less convenient, we'll wait until the local public radio station rebroadcasts it about a week or two later, even though it's not the same as a live concert.
