It will have to be a 9x12 walnut at least.:)

message 3502: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Definitely walnut. To go with my writing desk. :)

message 3503: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments We'll have to get someone who can make a miniature Viking ship for 500 000 posts and get them to inscribe a rune message along the rail. No better yet, on the sail. Having it on the rail would be useless since the mini shields would just cover it up.

message 3504: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments That would be so cool!! :D
I like the way you think.

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments That's me - a thinker. What you really need is a doer ;)

Terri | 19576 comments And a rich person to pay for it. :-)

message 3507: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments Yes, that would definitely be handy.

Hey Simona, Did you witness that tornado in Milan? I saw some video of it online today. Those things can be scary. I hope you & your property are safe.

message 3509: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Haven't seen any news on this yet.
Hope the damage was not too severe.

message 3510: by Simona (last edited Jul 31, 2013 04:01AM) (new)

Simona | 1453 comments Italian tornadoes are babies confronted with the US ones. I guess it made the news because we're not used to this kind of weather.
I live in a small town 20km from Milan, so I've just seen it on TV (luckily;)where I live it has been less violent, I just had a window broken, thank you.
Milan was famous for its fog until WW II - a much quieter manifestation. I'd rather have it back that one, thank you very much!

message 3511: by happy (new)

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments Kind of sounds like the one that hit Salt Lake City a few years ago. Big news around here, because we NEVER have them. Some friends I know in the Midwest were a little baffled because it was so small.

message 3512: by [deleted user] (new)

I remember seeing footage of that one, happy. That was a pretty good looking tornado. Uh..I don't mean there's anything good about buildings being torn up. It was one of those white, photogenic tornadoes.

message 3513: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments Derek wrote: "It was one of those white, photogenic tor..."

I'd never thought to call them that, but those are the kinds we get my area too. Though, they're attitude can be quite acerbic.

message 3514: by [deleted user] (new)

They're all brown & ugly looking around here because of all the dust.

message 3515: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Some of those tornadoes can be destructively beautiful. Like images of Hurricanes (cyclones/typhoons) from space. Nature at her most powerful.

message 3516: by [deleted user] (new)

I think so to, Terri. I've seen quite a few & it is awe inspiring. I like to watch them from a safe distance. Sometimes the aftermath sucks, though.

message 3517: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Yeah. The aftermath is a real shame of those beasts.

Have you ever seen a water spout? I have seen them in the ocean off my nearest coastline. They are pretty cool. And can drop fish in your boat. :-)

Only on TV or online. Never seen one in person, but they are cool looking. Fishing doesn't get any easier than that.:)

message 3519: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Yep. :-)

message 3520: by happy (last edited Jul 31, 2013 06:37PM) (new)

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments I was able to see the one in SLC. I was about 10 miles away and coming back from lunch. When it hit the transformer - the explosion was spectacular. Made it a b**** to get home that night though. All the north-south routes to get home were closed. I ended up making a 60 mile detour.

The damage pattern was interesting also. It really skipped around. It went up by the State Capitol - made tooth picks out of some 100 yr old/ 100 ft blue spruce trees 15 yds from the Capitol bldg, but the bldg itself wasn't touched. One house would be leveled, but its next door neighbor wouldn't be touched. Weird

message 3521: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah.. They tend to hop & skip around a bit. It is weird, because when you see them on video or in person, it looks like they are on the ground the whole time. We had one here a few years back that hit a trailer park & it was one of the most bizarre things I've ever seen. The mobile homes were lined up in a straight north/south position & it was literally like every other one was totally destroyed & the ones in between were not damaged at all. The storm chasers & meteorologists around here are still trying to wrap their brains around that one.

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Or it could be a fish tale. I have news. Today is our 37th wedding anniversary. Wedding mass was said at two in the afternoon. We used to do really special things on our anniversary. (Returning to the honeymoon place, dressing to the nines, going to the theater.) This year we decided to go to Outback next Monday for the Monday night special. Time does change things. We tend to make excuses for those changes. This year, Spaz, the cat, is at the vet's being neutered(sp.) Somehow that put a damper our celebration.

Congrats from me too Linda: Do Outback still do that Onion Bloomer appetizer?

message 3527: by Linda (new)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Yes, Tim, they do! I know you are aware that Americans are either willingly or unwillingly on a health kick. I heard on news yesterday that the 'Onion Bloomer' has enough calories to fill out your bloomers more than is healthy. I will worry about that the day after I eat it. Thank you, Jane!

message 3528: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments Oh goodness -- once in awhile... moderation...

message 3529: by Linda (new)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments I agree. Now the question is whether one results in a binge, whether it be the onion, shrimp on the barbie, desserts, etc.

message 3536: by [deleted user] (new)

Man I'm bored. OK..um...Who are your favorite musicians and/or music groups? Favorite album? Don't worry, I'm not a music snob.
Favorite musician: This one's easy for me. Neil Young hands down.
Favorite bands: This one's changed many times over the years. Old school Metallica(pre black album), Led Zeppelin, Dinosaur Jr., Rage Against The Machine, The Pixies, Sonic Youth, Radiohead, NWA, Public Enemy, Arcade Fire. I could keep going.
Favorite Album: Probably Radiohead's OK Computer.

message 3537: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments My favourites vary in favouritism. Meaning, some of my favourites from month to month are lessor faves, but always stay as faves in some capacity.
My favourites that are always my favourites though? And have been all my adult life?
Dead Kennedys, Sex Pistols, Pantera, Prodigy, The Clash.

message 3538: by [deleted user] (new)

You're hardcore Terri! Very cool. Also love Pantera & the DK's. I must admit that as I get older, I listen to less & less of the loud, fast stuff. Geez...I sound like my dad now. "You little hoodlums turn that noise down!"

message 3539: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I'm a bit the same. I have a big list of others that are second tier faves, but I do put them in the 'only if I am really in the mood' folder nowadays because I don't listen to the more hardcore punk, metal or techno as much any more.
But I never get sick of any of the Pistols albums, any of the early Clash albums, a couple Prodigy albums, and I will never, ever get sick of DKs Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables or Pantera's Vulgar Display of Power.

message 3540: by Nate (new)

Nate | 416 comments Oh man I could talk about music until the world blows up but I'll try to limit myself for the sake of everyone's eyes. Some of my all-time favorite records:

Miles Davis Bitches Brew
Buzzcocks Singles Going Steady
The Kinks Village Green Preservation Society
The Jesus Lizard Goat
Sonic Youth Daydream Nation
Genesis The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
Pixies Doolittle
Any Steely Dan record (To literally everyone I know's disgust)

Also a big fan of the Dead Kennedys as well. I love that demented surf-rock sound and that bizarre sense of humor. I probably played Fresh Fruit over a thousand times on my walkman in high school.

message 3541: by [deleted user] (new)

Cool Nate! I was waiting for the young, hip guy around here to speak up. On second thought, Daydream Nation might be my favorite album. No, make it Doolittle! I can never decide on favorite albums.
Steely Dan! WTF! You're no longer hip. :)

message 3542: by Lia (new)

Lia (lia_mb) | 638 comments My Fav; Led Zep, Iron Maiden, The Doors, Nazareth. Sometimes I also listen to The Carpenter, The Moody Blues and some AC/DC.

message 3543: by [deleted user] (new)

Nice Lia! I like all of those bands. My brother used to scare me with Number Of The Beast by Maiden, & then I ended up liking it. As far as pure musical talent goes, it's hard to beat LZ.

message 3544: by Bobby (new)

Bobby (bobbej) | 1375 comments Stones forever then the Doors and Kinks...even some old Eric Burdon. But nowadays love Passenger and Damian Rice. With a dash of Fleet Foxes.

message 3545: by Nate (new)

Nate | 416 comments Of course the Stones have to be given their just due. I've been irritating the hell out of my girlfriend with disco-era Stones records lately :D they're so bad but I can't help myself.

message 3546: by Bryn (last edited Aug 03, 2013 07:52PM) (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments Um, David Bowie (early). Favourite album, Diamond Dogs.

Nate | 416 comments Derek wrote: "Cool Nate! I was waiting for the young, hip guy around here to speak up. On second thought, Daydream Nation might be my favorite album. No, make it Doolittle! I can never decide on favorite albums...."

LOL, first time I've ever been called "hip". And I only held the title until I mentioned Steely Dan...but for that shining moment, I was cool.

message 3548: by Bryn (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments My other favourite is Wagner: Parsifal, Tristan & Isolde (I have three each of them) and chiefly The Ring (I have six).

Also have stacks of baroque opera. Monteverdi my favourite there.

message 3549: by Jane (last edited Aug 04, 2013 07:43AM) (new)

Jane | 3480 comments Wagner--yes, yes, yes! I don't have as many versions as you, Bryn, but I do have two Tristans, three Götterdämmerungs [my favorite of the Ring Cycle], and single versions of many of his other operas. DVD--the old Met Ring Cycle.
Richard Strauss: Elektra (2), Salome, Frau ohne Schatten (2).
Erich Wolfgang Korngold: Tote Stadt, Wunder der Heliane, Violante. He's probably more famous for his movie music, which I also like.
Debussy: Pelleas and Melisande--CD (2) & DVD.
Handel Julius Caesar.
Mussorgsky's Khovantshchina.

As far as popular music: Squeeze, Madness.

No denying the greatness of the Stones, Doors & Kinks. Fleet Foxes are so melodic. When I first got Helplessness Blues, I was hooked.
