Terri | 19576 comments Yeah, that's one of the reasons I don't have some people as top friends. We just don't have much contact and they may read and move in circles I don't..ie..romance, supernatural YA, modern contemporary. I'm never going to read any books that show up on their updates and any conversations they have are with people I don't know and I feel voyeuristic. :-)

Terri | 19576 comments Duchess of Cambridge (Kate) has gone into labour. Omg. I am so excited. I still can't believe that I saw Diana and Charles get married, then have William and Harry, and now William's having a baby of his own. That makes me feel old. :-)

Jane | 3480 comments I've bought her book and will probably read this Fall.

I hope she is not in labour as long as I was with my first.24 hours.

message 3357: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments I was long with my first [not as long as you, though] but 1/2 hour with my second.

It's a boy. 8 pounds 6oz

message 3359: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Oh gosh, just woke up and saw the news myself. A future King. So exciting. (A future Queen would have been just as exciting of course!)
The Royal couple must be so overjoyed that their child is safely delivered. :-)
They are such a lovely couple and seem madly in love.

Congratulations Will & Kate!

I'm gonna go check out my cousins, Kings Of Leon(yes, they've gotten too big for their own good, but they are family), My old friends The Flaming Lips, & Jackson Browne(who I've yet to see live) tomorrow night in Oklahoma City. It's another tornado benefit concert. Thankfully, this one doesn't involve country music. No offense to country music lovers, but it's not my thing. I'm excited!

Are Kings of Leon really your cousins? :-) I'm not a fan, but that's kinda cool.

message 3364: by [deleted user] (new)

Not first cousins. Our grandfathers were brothers. My Mom & Nathan, Caleb, Jared's Dad are first cousins. I'm not really a fan either. I thought their first two albums were decent, but the music went downhill after that. I haven't been around them since they were kids, so I don't know them very well. That side of my family is huge. I have been to a couple of the Followill family reunions. It's hillbilly heaven.

message 3365: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm just going to the concert to support the cause & to have something to do. I'm not a big fan of any of the bands playing. I like The Flaming Lips, but I've seen them live countless times. Ben Kweller is OK. He's playing tonight too.

Huh? I can't hear anything & my head hurts. Seriously, thanks Terri. It was pretty awesome. Even the cheesy Kings of Leon rocked it out tonight & the Lips were on top of their game. Can't avoid hillbillies around here. Most of them are nice though:)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments How could the Duchess even walk so soon after delivering a large baby? And she walked holding the baby! And she was dressed! And she had clean hair and had on her makeup! I am amazed!

message 3375: by David (new)

David Alkek (davidalkek) Women can deliver a baby and go out and work in the fields. Haven't you read "The Good Earth"?

message 3376: by Anne (new)

Anne (spartandax) | 797 comments It depends on the difficulty of the birth. My son was born at 11:04PM and the next morning I walked down to see him.

Anne (spartandax) | 797 comments The baby's name is George Alexander Louis. I wish the had put Alexander first, one of my favorite boy names-George is meh.

message 3378: by Jane (last edited Jul 25, 2013 10:20AM) (new)

Jane | 3480 comments Well, they had to keep something traditional. That's the name of the Queen's dad, George VI.

message 3379: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments So much history with the George name. I personally would not call my kid George, but I was reading that in England and Wales George is the 15th most popular name for a baby. Go figure.

George for the Queen's Dad (and all the other King George's). Alexander after the Queen who's middle name is Alexandra. Louis is one of daddy William's middle names.

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments I know about the Chinese women in the fields, but Chinese women bind their feet. Anne, you are one of the strongest women I know. Your endurance is amazing. From my experience of having a big baby, I marvel that the Dutchess could fix up and walk. Her fortitude was the subject of most interest at the pool plex today. We took a little poll: 100% of the women said they could not have done what the Dutchess did; 100% of the men said they could have made even better time than the Dutchess; of the men polled, 100% were field workers and farmers. Lol

Terri | 19576 comments Did everyone see the Site Announcement at the top of your home page (the page that displays your groups).
Goodreads is now 20 million users.

Where the heck are they all??

I don't find their figure very credible. There must be millions of inactive users. Hundred of thousands of individuals with multiple profiles . Fake profiles of members. People who have lost their profile or passwords and have had to start a new profile.

Millions who join, maybe add a book and never come back.

I would like to know what the real figure is for people who actually 'use' the site. Surely it is about half as many as they boast.

message 3383: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) They must be able to get stats like that.
I know I read once that Twitter says they have a big user number but the actual active users is pretty small.

message 3384: by [deleted user] (new)

I saw that & was thinking 'no freaking way'.

At least Twitter admits it. Goodreads like to make out that every one of those 20 million is an active user. They boast about it in interviews and conventions.

message 3388: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I think it would be nice if it was.....20 million accounts, 10 million of whom log in at least once a month and 1 million users who log in every day. But that's probably not as catchy. :)

message 3389: by Tim (new)

Tim Hodkinson (timhodkinson) | 577 comments Anne wrote: "The baby's name is George Alexander Louis. I wish the had put Alexander first, one of my favorite boy names-George is meh."

Alexander is interesting. You can see the reason for the other 2: Louis after great uncle Mountbatten, George to annoy the Americans, but where did Alexander come from?

message 3390: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Jul 24, 2013 06:28PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Check out my message 3409.
Alexandra, or maybe it is Alexandria, is one of the Queen's middle names.
Louis is one of William's middle names and they got Louis from there.

I also read in the newspaper today that Prince George may never be called King George if he gains the throne because Prince Charles may take the name King George when he takes the throne.
I don't know why that would be, and I can't imagine Charlie would do it.

message 3391: by Bobby (new)

Bobby (bobbej) | 1375 comments I got a message from Goodreads saying I was in the 1% of book reviews. I find that hard to believe with all the members that have read 1000 books or more.

message 3392: by Geoffrey (new)

Geoffrey (newprestonhill) | 53 comments Perhaps the "Alexander" is in memory of the deeply-felt but sadly short-lived love affair between Queen Victoria and the (soon to be Czar) Alexander of Russia.
Probably not. But a romantic thought perhaps.

Geoffrey (newprestonhill) | 53 comments Prince Charles = King George? What are they now, Popes?
So glad I left when I did.
No offense to any Englishpersons present.

message 3394: by Jane (last edited Jul 24, 2013 07:07PM) (new)

Jane | 3480 comments I don't think it was to annoy anyone. George was the name Queen Elizabeth's dad used upon his accession to the throne. If I remember right, his name had been Albert, called Bertie. Didn't Queen Victoria stipulate she never wanted a British king to have the name Albert? I think William & Kate were just being diplomatic.

message 3395: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Jul 24, 2013 07:11PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I'm not sure why Charles would change to George. I am curious. But the damn newspaper just stated that this was on the cards and never explained.
I can't imagine Charles being anybody but King Charles.
Changing his name to George when he ascends the throne would be very weird.

Terri | 19576 comments Bobby wrote: "I got a message from Goodreads saying I was in the 1% of book reviews. I find that hard to believe with all the members that have read 1000 books or more."

Huh? Is this something different to the usual stats that appear under our name?
How on earth did you get in the top 1%. No offense but the people who 'try' to be in the top percentiles claim to be reading and reviewing two or three books a day.

message 3397: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments That's ridiculous. Who are they trying to impress?

message 3398: by Geoffrey (new)

Geoffrey (newprestonhill) | 53 comments Although George VI was only named George last (of four names) he took the throne during the whole Edward/Wallis Simpson brouhaha and supposedly wanted to keep the royal continuity with his father, and presumably placate his restive subjects (according to my limited efforts at research).
But that still leaves the question: where's the brouhaha?
Why cannot Charles be Charles?
Perhaps the Royals are still out of sorts about the whole Civil War/execution thing.
But Charles II was monarch for all those rip-roaring Restoration Comedies. Huzzah!
Long Live King Charles III and not King George – yet again.
