Terri | 19576 comments When I dropped by to reacquaint myself with one of my old reviews of a Bernard Cornwell book, I noticed this: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12...

'other editions' seems to be now displayed in the book's info and 'readers also enjoyed' are now up where 'other editions' used to be in the top right corner.

I preferred it the previous way. With the 'other readers enjoyed' further down on the right.

message 3302: by Bryn (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments I noticed that today and didn't know where I was. I don't give such priority to 'also enjoyeds' ... I think I'd rather see 'books by' staring at me.

message 3303: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments All these little creeping up from behind changes are all adding up to one thing - this is turning into an advert site. Not pleased at all by the continued forced marketing.

message 3304: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Jul 12, 2013 04:22PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I don't like it either.
Those 'Other Editions' displayed prominently have saved me many times from buying books I already have or have read. Since Commonwealth books get a differnt title so often in the US.

I look at Readers Also Enjoyed, but it has less interest to me than the editions.

I looked in the Goodreads Feedback Group and it turns out only members of The feedback group get to see this feature in beta. So they can get feedback on it.

So if anyone doesn't like it and you are in the Feedback Group, I would advise expressing your opinion here: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

Ah, that's why I don't like it. It's marketing. -- I knew I didn't like it.

Terri | 19576 comments marketing phobes. :D

message 3308: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I still have the old version for awhile. Whoever belongs to the feedback group is getting a preview, the rest of us have to wait.

message 3309: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments I wondered if I'm missing something; I saw no changes. I'm glad you feedback people are alerting us to what is coming along the pike.

message 3310: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I was wondering what was going on too, thought I would mention it in case others were confused too. :)

I should get a T-shirt and wear it proudly. :D

Jane | 3480 comments Rats!!! we suspected that when Amazon became involved, things would change and perhaps not always for the better...

I mentioned the Feedback group thing in post..um..3334 or something like that.

Terri | 19576 comments For those not in the Feedback Group and who are also curious to see what some of us are seeing..it looks like this.

That Elizabeth(Alaska) is something else.

Terri | 19576 comments lol :)

message 3317: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments This is miserable! I've gotten used to the way it is now; why "fix" it if it ain't broke? It's too cluttered and you're overwhelmed with stuff the new way. "Improvements"?--wrong choice of noun!

message 3318: by Anne (new)

Anne (spartandax) | 797 comments George Zimmerman has been acquitted. Thank God!

I find it cluttered too. I think they think people NEED lots of images and they don't. Maybe those who will join from Amazon may be used to lots of images. But there are people already here and who join everyday because of the text rich interface.

message 3320: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments They have plenty of images as it is right now. And--don't make them all the same size; vary them the way it is now. Curiosity:I wonder what the percentage of people who join from Amazon will be. And how many present GR members have joined because of Amazon?

message 3321: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments There was, apparently, a huge influx after the Amazon purchase announcement.
I imagine it will go through the roof if Amazon start adding a click button on its book pages for Goodreads.

I know how they will promote Amazon here (by having it so you can log in with your Amazon account) but I don't know yet how it works the other way. Or even if Amazon will promote GR on their site at all.

message 3322: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments Oh, good grief, I don't even have an Amazon account. I guess I'll worry about that if/when it happens. "Sufficient unto the day..."

message 3323: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Don't worry. It will be like Facebook now. You won't need an Amazon account.
Anyone who does have an Amazon account will be able to log in through it.
Anyone without one, or who does not want to log in with Amazon, will be able to log in like we do now. Just a normal log in.

message 3324: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments Great!! Good to hear!!

message 3325: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments If GR is "down for maintenance" I wish they had a set schedule and would tell us, so we could plan accordingly. Yes, I know, sometimes emergencies do come up...

I discovered this by accident: tap/click on the cover image, and "Other editions" appears.

What, you didn't intuit that? You lack ESP or something? ;-)

I know. Crazy. Haha. Who is going to ever find that unless by accident!

message 3328: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments The only way I would have found it was to enlarge the cover for a better look at it. Will we even be able to do that anymore? I mean sometimes I want to be able to tell if the abs are real or painted on, or sometimes I can't even tell what the cover really is until its larger. This change gives me agita.

message 3329: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments The only reason I knew it was there was because I saw it in the image GR posted in Feedback.
The image I then posted in message 3344.

message 3330: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Saw this announcement in Goodreads Feedback and thought I would share it so members can expect the site to go out for an hour.

Hey all,

We just wanted to let you know that there will be a planned site outage tonight for some necessary database maintenance. The outage will begin at 10 PM Pacific Time and will last about an hour. We apologize for any inconvenience, and appreciate your patience.

message 3331: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments Thanks, Terri, I appreciate the warning.
An online game I used to play [and has been defunct for a couple of years], used to warn us as your note above.

message 3332: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments You are welcome. It is such a pain when they don't announce outages.
On the rare occasion that they do, and I chance upon the announcement, I will let you all know.

message 3338: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments Whew!!! I see no changes to the site--yet!

message 3339: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Me neither. I hunted for changes straight away. But we have come away unscathed.....I think....

message 3340: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments So far...

message 3341: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Haha. Yep!

message 3342: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments The one notable change that I've seen is that my update list is now as long as it was prior to the previous downtime when they made the changes to the book page. In between, I only had 5 or so updates until I got that more updates button.

message 3343: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Hmm..mine looks the same. I always remember a lot of updates. Maybe your top friends weren't leaving many updates. :-)

Oh, mine too. That short updates list was annoying. You only got about an hour's worth without asking to 'see more'.

message 3345: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments That's odd. I wonder why mine seemed longer even before the outage...

message 3346: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments I've never listed anyone as a top friend. All my friends' updates are equally important to me :D

(that and I read early on in my membership that top friend updates includes their friends' updates and I thought that could get out of control and chose not to test the theory)

message 3347: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Ha. No, Top Friends don't include their friends' updates.
I can't have everyone's updates. If I had everyone as a top friend I wouldn't see the updates of the people I interact with regularly. :-)

message 3348: by Bryn (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments All my friends are top friends...
er, except one or two; I like them; but they 'like' massive picture-posts daily and put the screeching brakes on my updates feed. We can still be friends, I just resort to 'untopping' them.

message 3349: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Jul 18, 2013 08:19PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I hate those damn moving gifs and big pictures. That is one reason some of the folks on my friends list aren't top friends.

I also take off the people that are nice to talk to, but are constantly adding dozens of books to their tbrs. Sometimes my entire updates will be taken up with a long list of random books that person has added. If I add a massive amount of books to my tbr I always unclick the 'add to updates' box so I don't fill up peoples updates page with all my adds.

message 3350: by Bryn (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments I unclick that 'add to updates' quite often. Even too often, it's a habit.

Began when a friend unfriended me, early on -- we didn't fall out, I assume I was too active. He was from my Shakespeare group and had no earthly interest in histfic. So, trivial posts or whenever I feel I talk too much, unclick.
