Bobby (bobbej) | 1375 comments The Charlton Hester version was entitled "The Omega Man". Thought it was cool in its day but watched it again a couple of years ago and was not impressed.

message 3152: by Nate (new)

Nate | 416 comments It's incredibly cheesy but I still have a great time with it. The part where Heston is quoting along with the Woodstock film...so hokey, especially considering the actor probably considered it "hippie garbage" or something along those lines.

message 3153: by Nate (new)

Nate | 416 comments It's funny you bring up Reacher Terri, my dad was disgusted at Hollywood's choice of actors for the part. I'm not a Reacher fan but I definitely know that Cruise is just...no.

message 3154: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) It's not like Hollywood cares about that sort of thing. If the big name actor is only 5 foot and the character 6 foot 2........oh well. They did the same with Clive Cussler, I mean Matthew McConaughey and Steve Zahn??

message 3155: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments At least Zahn'a character, though visually nothing like in the books was pretty well done. So was William H. Macy's.
Sometimes it works. James Ransone looks nothing like P.J. Person, but none of the marines felt he was the wrong guy. I agree though, that I often question director choices.

message 3156: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I objected to Zahn's character the most. They made him an idiot when he most definitely is not. And he doesn't look even a little bit like Giordino is supposed to. I still liked the movie but I didn't really feel it was much like the books.

message 3157: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) We should make a list of the best and worst adaptations. :)

message 3158: by Bobby (new)

Bobby (bobbej) | 1375 comments One of the worst castings , from a book view had to be Jack Nicholson in the "Shining". Don't get me wrong, Nicholson was fantastic, but in the book his character was very quiet and reserved. The horror was watching this gentle man lose it but Nicholson had earlier played in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo Nest" as a bit of a loon and he's always been an in your face charcter. At the time I thought Jon Voight would have worked.

I have never read a Reacher, but my hubby has listened to a few of the audiobooks in the car....and inflicted them on me when I travelled with him. Cruise was not what I had pictured either.
We actually watched the Reacher movie on the weekend. Thought it might be a decent thriller. It was positively one of the worst movies I have watched for years. It was like a b grade 90's flick. Everything about it was awful.

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments Because teenagers are, well teenagers, and are busy busy with their general bad selves, I have been "gifted" a 2.5 year old hamster.
If this keeps up, I'm going to have a managerie. I moved to my current place to secure more space for books not beasties. They still have a puppy... I am feart.

message 3161: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Uh oh...what happens when the puppy grows up? Or starts chewing stuff because the teen won't play with it?
Off to darcy's menagerie.. :(

message 3162: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments What's the Hamster's name? :)

message 3163: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments Well, I'd gladly take the puppy. It would crimp my book budget, but for it's mental health, no problem. However, my brother is likely to want some of the purchase price back and I can't afford that.

Awww..that's so cute. Not the name (that is a cute name too I suppose..) but that he was sleepy. :)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments Crap! I've just seen some footage of the flooding in one of our western provinces here. I hope our Albertan (Calgary and environs) who are affected are well and found safety, warmth and dry underthings.

message 3167: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Jun 27, 2013 05:53PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I had not seen any news on it. Sounds really bad. :(

Hope the Cash Cowboys are okay. :)

message 3168: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Ahhh, they'll be fine. Alberta is rich and the federal government is pitching in with the disaster fund. They've already started the clean up. There are some crazy pictures of the once calm river taking out 50' of back yards though. At least people will stop arguing with me about creek setbacks and flood construction levels for awhile. :)

The hockey rink (for the Calgary Flames) was flooded up to Tier 11
The Calgary Stampede grounds were all under water and so is all of Downtown
Before Flood

After Flood

Wow. it looks like the flooding reched downtown. Is that common? Common as in once in ten years type of common?

message 3170: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Not common as far as I remember. Western Canada does flood a lot but this one in Alberta is pretty massive. It usually just reaches the suburbs or smaller cities, never the Stampede Grounds or the Saddledome.

So you brother would rather see the dog wind up at a shelter?

I dunno. Look at it as having two stories for the price of one. :)

No. He's one of those people who knows tons of people, most with a much larger income and one of them would likely take the dog. They never end up on a shelter. He'd give it to me before he'd do that.

I recently read Jaws for the first time and have to say that in this instance, I much preferred the movie.

Can't think how this applies to books though. This is sort of relevant:

Well it is Random Thoughts so it doesn't need to apply to books. :)

How on earth is your body going to handle playing Rugby at 42!? I pity your poor body.

Oh...and hopefully the Lions will get their arses kicked on Saturday. :D

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Happy Fourth of July to all of you.
I thought about my books last night. Conn IgguldenThe Blood of GodsTopazLeon Uris both became available on the same day! It doesn't get much better than that!
Well, I would love to go to the Oklahoma Tornado relief concert Saturday, but that won't happen. I cannot find any information about the concert being televised. If anyone has info, please pass it to me. Thanks.

message 3184: by [deleted user] (new)

@Linda. As of right now, the concert is not going to be televised. Happy Fourth!

message 3185: by Linda (last edited Jul 04, 2013 01:58PM) (new)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Thanks for the info. If something changes, please let me know. Seems like they could collect more money if they televised it, especially if Miss Yearwood and Mr. Brooks do "HONEY CAN YOU SQUEEZE ME IN"!

Happy Fourth to you. Do you grill, make homemade ice cream and watch fireworks? That is usually our party, but not this year. We stay away from the lakes on the 4th. Too crowded.

message 3186: by [deleted user] (new)

I too stay away from lakes & state parks on holiday weekends. I'm having some friends & family over to grill out & watch fireworks. I live just 2 blocks from where they do the fireworks in my town, so I always end up hosting on the 4th. We're getting started soon. There may be some kind of pay per view on that concert. I just know that it's not being televised nationally.

message 3187: by Linda (new)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments You have a good time with family and friends. Mine went elsewhere this year because Husband did not open the pool (I'm miffed). Our town is small so we can see the fireworks from our house. If you happen upon any pay per view info, will you let me know?

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Weather reports! Seeing those flood pictures above reminded me about the southern hemisphere weather. July is a hot month in Dixie. Lakewaters are like bathwater. We water ski on week days when the water is as smooth as glass. Tempers tend to be a little hot. Lake Sydney Lanier in Georgia is probably a cooler lake. The Tennessee Valley Authority series of lakes and dams on the Tennessee River are glorious! How many books have been written about the TVA Project? Farms, homes, graveyards covered in water to provide cheaper electrical power to several southern states. Smith Lake in Alabama is deep and clear. Skinny dipping is not a good idea on Smith Lake. It is a finger lake so you may put in (boat ramp) in northern part of the state or at Birminham. Lake Patrol rescued us one dark summer night on that lake. Men just won't admit they are lost or don't know the direction whether they drive a car by land or a boat by lake. Arkansas has beautiful lakes, especially at Hot Springs. They have excellent food service stations along the shores or on rafts on the lake. California has Lake Berryessa in Napa County. That lake is beautiful but cold in summer. Cold must be a relative quality. We were on that lake in the summer, and people were skiing without wet suits. I couldn't get in the water because it was so cold. People who jumped in and jumped back into the boat like a cat were from warmer climates. There is a beautiful lake in Texas, not far from the Louisianna state line. Don't recall the name, but Husband and brother-in-law hauled off to Texas pulling an empty trailer. They bought a Skeeter boat in Texas and tried it out on that lake. Sister and I went along for the ride. Of course that boat, which we couldn't afford, was for quality family outings, the men said. They said they bought the boat so that my sister and I and all our children could water ski on Pickwick Lake (a TVA lake) every summer weekend. Well, sister and I weren't fooled. It was a bass fishing boat, not bought for anyone's pleasure except that of my husband and brother-in-law. You should have seen us that summer on Pickwick . We were a glorious sight--two sulled up men driving

Skeeter Bass Fishing boatload of kids on the river pulling two happy skiers, my sister and me.

Caddo Lake

message 3192: by Linda (new)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Describe Caddo Lake, please, and only if you want to.

message 3193: by [deleted user] (new)

It's been awhile since I've been there. It's a very beautiful lake, surrounded by cypress forest. Parts of the lake give you the feeling of being in a primordial swamp. It sits right on the Texas/Louisiana border. There are gators & many supposed Bigfoot sightings in that area. I loved going there as a kid because it made me feel like I was stepping back in time.
