A certain Naval officer is called a REAR Admiral -- could it be the usage goes back to translation of the Latin Posterior? Now I'll chuckle every time I see THAT term!

I'm not opposed to being excused from latrine duties. ;)

*sigh and picks up bucket* looks like I'm still stuck cleaning up everyone's mess.:-)
Linda wrote: "Simona, did you mean Steven Pressfield as author ofGates of Fire ? Am I missing something here?"Yes, I meant Pressfield - as Terri, and Anne, and Linda noticed - I just entusiastically clicked the wrong button.
Thanks for your answers, I'll start from Last of the Amazons - I trust Bryn good taste :)
You know the tech crews that fix your power lines and power poles etc? Maintain the lines?I just had two of their big trucks drive down the paddock to work on poles. Never knocked on the door to ask if they could. They are supposed to ask.
One then gets out and urinates on the ground a few metres from the truck. Within clear sight of me and the house....
I went out to 'greet' them when they came back passed the house.
I think it is possible I used too many eff words in the 'conversation' that followed. Ooops.
They are probably bitching about me as they drive down the road saying, how can she be so offended that I p#ssed on the ground in front of the house when she's got a mouth like a trucker. :-)

LoL! You tell em Terri. They probably deserved it.

Haha :) I had similar incident a few years back but I didn't have to say a word - one of the guys put his football cap down right beside the fence of my dogs' run. One of my dogs, outraged by workmen on our land without me being there to sanction it, ate the cap :) The man then came to find me and I suggested that finding me first would have saved his cap and anyway he supported the wrong team :)
Lol. Perfect. :-) Your dog did good. Punishing that guy for not bothering to speak to you first. In my opinion my guys today did deserve to be told what is and isn't acceptable behaviour....although yes, a few less eff words would have made me look less crazy. :-)
I was a bit embarrassed when I went back in the house. I do believe at one stage I actually said (and I know I said this as it is emblazoned on my brain)
"Yeah mate, I am pretty f#cking p#ssed off. It is not too f#cking much to ask you to come to my f#cking door and f#cking knock on it, is it? To tell me that you will be entering my f#cking property. And then to have your f#cking mate p#ssing right there where I can f#cking see it? He's an adult. Can't he manage his toilet breaks better so he doesn't have to f#cking do that out the front of my f#cking house?"
I wanted to say. I am not usually this crazy sounding...but I don't think they would have believed me. I was just so gobsmacked that they had the audacity and the eff words were easier to get out than intelligent ones.

I think you made your point with a degree of brevity. It's what we call good communication... and possibly something to be mentioned to the jury in mitigation ...
Lol. Yeah, brevity and spice. Good words for it. Although the dude that urinated didn't seem shamed. He just smirked at me. Admittedly...I did smirk first.
I learned that watching Heartbreak High ages ago, and they pronounced it yute.ETA: I think the best way to explain it is that it's really the first bit of the word 'utility'.

You can't grease your centurion's palm to get out of latrine duty??? :)
Leslie wrote: "I love learning international slang. :)Would ute be pronounced like ooot or yute?"
It's pronounced yute.

OMG! My hubby and I had the biggest laugh!! (I just told him) That's hysterical. Heartbreak High...I guess that was in an exchange for Degrassi Junior High (which was great first time around...but not the new Degrassi, even th. :-)
Yeah it comes from utility. Jute. Although we have a couple different kinds of traybacks that we call utes that would not be called a utility overseas.

Heartbreak High...I guess that was in an exchange for Degrassi Junior High (which was great first time around...but not the new Degrassi, even th. :-)"That's how I equated it, though I have never seen a Degrassi episode at any stage. Mostly, it was my introduction to Australian culture, so for that it was useful. The story lines...meh. Although, I will admit to always wanting an open wharehouse type space to live in, but that started with some dance film, HH just made me realise what all could be done with one (even if it was just a garage).
Heartbreak High, the series not the movie (as the series was based off of the movie..movie came first), is actually a pretty good example of Aussie culture. Unlike Home and Away or Neighbours. Blerk.

Before you throw a spear in my general direction, I do have an Akubra, and I'm not scared to use it!
Hurrah for people travelling or researching UNESCO sites (some we've talked about in this group)http://www.unesco.org/new/en/media-se...
Perhaps other institutions will follow suit.
Hey Bobby. This is definitely random..so I guess this is the appropriate thread. Do you like that gig with ESPN? I imagine you have to travel alot & I have no idea what it pays, but that has always been one of my dream jobs. I love sports of all kinds & to be up close & personal sounds awesome too me. I know it's work for you, but do you enjoy it?
My introduction to Aussie culture and life was watching skippy the bush kangaroo in the 70/80sOops also country practice and the sulivans I think it was.
It still amazes me that the UK and Canada got so many shows from us. I thought it had been a one way street. I thought we just got all your shows. It is such a surprise. :)
I wish we got more from you and Canada. American tv is really poor as a whole and most of what the UK sends is not that good either.
We don't get a lot of Canadian made tv, we get USA tv which is made in Canada. The only one I can think of is the Murdoch mysteries.
Mark wrote: "We don't get a lot of Canadian made tv, we get USA tv which is made in Canada."There are a lot of those about.
Derek wrote: "Hey Bobby. This is definitely random..so I guess this is the appropriate thread. Do you like that gig with ESPN? The traveling, the weather, the poorly designed stadiums and venues are all big downsides but I've got to work so many great events like the Olympics (6 times) Super Bowl, etc. As I type this I am in L.A. airport waiting to go home after 1 1/2 weeks of Stanley Cup with NBC. Both of my sons are in the business as cameramen as well. I was a tire builder and Air Traffic Controller (Reagan fired everyone) as a young man so TV Sports was a good career change. Its a lot of work setting up cams, cabling and then tearing it all down again, sometimes all in the same day. But its been good.
Wow, the Olympics six times? That's so awesome. I'm not a big sports guy and even I can see that's seriously cool.
Yeah man. The Olympics & the Super Bowl...that's incredibly cool too me. Thanks Bobby.
Derek wrote: "Yeah man. The Olympics & the Super Bowl...that's incredibly cool too me. Thanks Bobby."That's amazing. The Superbowl alone must be an increadable experience never mind the Olympix
Now I can say that I kind of know someone who covered the Olympics, Super Bowl & Stanley Cup. I kind of know someone who works for ESPN...that might make me a minor celebrity around here.
Derek wrote: "Now I can say that I kind of know someone who covered the Olympics, Super Bowl & Stanley Cup. Or fake a signature...I am sure nobody will notice. :-)

That's odd - I made a comment about this last night (or I thought I made a comment) but it seems to have disappeared into the ether. I'll try again; Looked this site up - it's got 250km of perfect white sandy beaches! Looks like the Maldives. Certainly beats the Thames estuary.
that is weird, mate. I never saw a post from you about it.Fraser Island is a beautiful place. We used to always go there fishing and camping. The beach is a highway all the way around the island.
You catch a barge over there. It takes your vehicle.
I never go anymore as the barge prices are pretty high now.
