My mum's mind is starting to go. It's hard for us all to deal with.

Terri | 19576 comments Five great books about libraries
Bob Minzesheimer, USA TODAY7 p.m. EDT May 8, 2013
For original artcile go here: http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/bo...

USA TODAY's Bob Minzesheimer asked Josh Hanagarne, author of the memoir, The World's Strongest Librarian (Gotham), to name his five favorite books about libraries.

Hanagarne's selections and his reasons:

-- The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco: "I've always wanted to visit the labyrinthine library in The Name Of The Rose, if only to see if I could find my way out. I'd probably forget I was in a maze and just sit down and start reading."

-- A Gentle Madness: Bibliophiles, Bibliomanes, And The Eternal Passion For Books by Nicholas Basbanes: "My favorite book about books, the people who collect them, and libraries of all kinds."

-- The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss: "The scenes where Kvothe is poking around the Archives are some of my favorites in the series to date."

-- Matilda by Roald Dahl: " 'So Matilda's strong young mind continued to grow, nurtured by the voices of all those authors who had sent their books out into the world like ships on the sea. These books gave Matilda a hopeful and comforting message: You are not alone.' " Enough said."

-- The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova: "I'm a sucker for anyone chasing forbidden knowledge around the stacks of an old library, and if it means you get chased by vampires, so be it."

Josh Hanagarne's book: The World's Strongest Librarian A Memoir of Tourette's, Faith, Strength, and the Power of Family by Josh Hanagarne

Terri | 19576 comments I have an announcement to make.

Dawn and I were discussing (before she went away on holidays) whether we should add another mod now that we are nearing 2000 members. We agreed we would.

We decided to put the hard word on Darcy (who you have all known in the past as just 'D'). And see if Darcy would like to join the mod team.

There were a couple reasons why Darcy.

*Darcy does nearly all the group reads with us every month and so I can get some help leading those two group reads. In many cases it will mean there will be a mod in BOTH group reads instead of me split between the two group read books.

*Darcy is nice. :-)

*Darcy has been an active member for a year.

*and Darcy is a master of the Twitter.

In regards to that last one....I have put Darcy in charge of our NEW TWITTER page. Which is being launched today along with Darcy's Mod crowning. :D

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Thank you, Derek. I will add my wish for a happy Mothers' Day to all our mothers. Children, if you can, visit your mother today. If you cannot, give her a telephone call.

Terri | 19576 comments Ours was Mother's Day yesterday. I got to Mum's the day before and gave her a big heart shaped cookie with 'I love mum' written on it in icing.
Told her she couldn't touch it until Mother's Day. Then yesterday for Mother's Day, I rang her.

Bobby (bobbej) | 1375 comments So hard to make choices for our parents as they get older. My mom just moved into a new condo but its about 25 miles away. We tried to guide a bit but she was determined to go here. 83 years old or not! No assisted living yet but I dread that day....it will not make her happy.

Simona | 1453 comments Has anybody read a HF book by Steven Pressman, other than the wonderful Gates of Fire?
I've "discovered" several of them, here on GR.
Since I can't find them at the library, I'll have to buy them and I would appreciate some suggestions from other readers.
Thank you!

message 2690: by Anne (new)

Anne (spartandax) | 797 comments It's Pressfield and we read The Virtues of War: A Novel of Alexander the Great as a group read a while back.

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments Simona wrote: "Has anybody read a HF book by Steven Pressman, other than the wonderful Gates of Fire?"

My other fave has been the wonderful Last of the Amazons -- maybe if the subject suits you. It mightn't live up to Gates of Fire, but how much can we expect? Yet to try Tides of War which I have.

message 2692: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited May 13, 2013 03:04PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I think it is promising that Bryn liked Last of the Amazons.
I have heard that Tides of War is boring, but it is also on the US Navy's required reading list, so sailors must like it. :-)

message 2693: by Bryn (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments Oh dear. I found 'Virtues of War' boring, so I'm afraid he can, for me, go there.

message 2694: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I found Virtues of War as dull as dishwater too.

message 2695: by Linda (new)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Simona, did you mean Steven Pressfield as author ofGates of Fire ? Am I missing something here?

message 2696: by Bryn (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments Linda wrote: "Simona, did you mean Steven Pressfield?"

I didn't even notice that, Linda. I'd say she did, and not the author of Fifty Major Economists. A book I cannot recommend.

message 2697: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Haha. Yes, she meant Pressfield. :-)

message 2698: by Linda (new)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments I guess I liked KILLING ROMMEL because I gave it four stars. It was a desert chase, but there was something special about the book. Something similar to enemies calling a truce on Christmas and sharing the feast.

Yeah for Darcy!! :)

And I love the mod handle, I am a sucker for Latin.

message 2700: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I know you are. Lol. You love that latin translator.

I googled Roman Officer titles to come up with Darcy's Mod Title. :D

As I told her, I nearly opted for Pilus Posterior, but despite the laugh it gave me, it would not have looked any good.

The other one I looked at was:

Immunis
longer serving soldier or army member holding special skills, who are excused from chores such as latrine duties, etc..
