Dawn (caveatlector) Yep, it was out here last night. I couldn't get on at all until this morning.

And I haven't been getting any pop ups of any kind. Not even this new 'recommend to friends' one.

message 2402: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments I wasn't able to get on last night either. I'm also not getting the pop-ups, but I have a pop-up blocker thingy.

Terri | 19576 comments Got to love pop up blockers and Ad blockers.

message 2404: by Bobby (new)

Bobby (bobbej) | 1375 comments Always had pop-up blockers but got a new computer last week and when transferring my old hard drive this must have been disabled. Have to download a new one.

message 2405: by [deleted user] (new)

GR was out for at least a few hours here, last night. I thought it might have been my ISP, but I guess not. Have not encountered the pop-ups yet, thankfully.

Terri | 19576 comments Oh my, Marina. You might have to reassess all your ratings by the sounds of it.

message 2407: by [deleted user] (new)

How about Adam Scott! Do any of my Aussie friends care for golf?

message 2408: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I don't care for golf much, but I do keep an eye on our Aussies achieving well in their chosen sports overseas. I was reading about his performance in the newspaper this morning.

message 2409: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Oh..and it is interesting to note that Adam Scott coming first, and Aussies Jason Day and Marc Leishman came 3rd and 4th
Was the Aussies year this year. :-)

message 2410: by [deleted user] (new)

It was exciting. I'm a fanatic. Sports are about the only TV I watch anymore. I like Adam Scott, but I was pulling for Jason Day. I did not get any reading done this afternoon/evening.

message 2411: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments haha. You got it bad for sports. :)

message 2412: by [deleted user] (new)

I got it real bad for sports. Books, sports & food..that's all I need. Oh yeah...& beer.

message 2413: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Lol. :-)

message 2414: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments It is ridiculous how much sportspeople get paid in some parts if the world.
We lose a lot of our top level sportspeople overseas because Australian sporting clubs just cannot afford to pay the same amount of money that overseas (especially America and Europe) are willing to pay.
Our Soccer suffers form that. We lose a lot of our soccer stars overseas. The upside is that they get a lot of high level experience overseas and so when International Compeitions come along (Olympics, World Cup) those guys come back and play for us. But our national league suffers.

One of our most popular Aussie sports is Rugby League. http://www.nrl.com/ They get paid good ,money, and the good thing is it is mostly a Australian sport so we don't lose our top tier players overseas.

I had forgotten about this video, thanks for posting it Margaret. For those reading Conspiracies of Rome it helps to visualise a bit what the main character goes through went explained how books are made - though in his day it was parchment and papyrus rather than mixed source paper.

message 2418: by Leland (new)

Leland (lelandhw) That was neat. One of my first jobs right out of high school was in a printing office. So with the exception of the actual printing and the paper cutting, I've done everything in that video. (because you love a show off right? LOL) Of course all we did were cookbooks. Blergh!!! And mostly local ones at that. You know, fundraising stuff for the ladies auxiliary or junior league.

But still - REAL books - long may they last.

Leland (lelandhw) It was a fun job. :)

Terri | 19576 comments Just woke up and saw the news.

My thoughts are with America, most especially Boston and the families of those killed or injured in the bomb blasts.

Anne (spartandax) | 797 comments I know a lot of you will not agree with me, may diss me, or laugh at me, but I have to say this. We as a nation have gone down the slippery slope. we have turned our backs on decency and morality, the Churches are mostly empty on Sunday, and many have turned their backs on God. But He will not be mocked. As I watch on the Blaze right now the story of Dr. baby killer on trial and see actual pictures of babies he slaughtered that were full term, I say forgive them, Lord, for they know not what they do,

message 2425: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Apr 15, 2013 02:41PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments It is just so stupid. And what do they achieve exactly? I get their sinister plans with 9/11 was to inflict mass tolls, but also send the world economies into disarray through the stock market etc...and the Pentagon was an effort to take out a major political and military artery. Horrible though those attacks were, they were not stupid attacks. There was evil brilliance behind them. But these kinds of acts show that they no longer have a terror mastermind behind them. It was just opportunistic. Idiots.

It doesn't matter if we I, or others, don't agree with you Anne. You are as entitled to that opinion as I am to mine. :-)

message 2427: by Crystal (new)

Crystal Bryan | 305 comments Terri, which is why I wonder if it was a domestic group or individual. Very sad no matter the origin. Killing innocents is not the way to make "statements."

Terri | 19576 comments Crystal wrote: "Terri, which is why I wonder if it was a domestic group or individual. Very sad no matter the origin. Killing innocents is not the way to make "statements.""

I agree. I am wondering that too. I will be surprised if they can link these bombs back to an organised terror leader in the Middle East or Asia (Pakistan).

Whatever the case. I will be thinking of the victims, their families and the Bostonians (is that the right term) today. I am sorry they have to go through this. No country should have to deal with this kind of act.

message 2429: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) We were a little worried here at work as one of our co-workers had gone down to run the Boston marathon but she and her husband are fine, thank goodness. :)

message 2430: by [deleted user] (new)

Terri wrote: "You shouldn't have deleted your comment, Derek. :-) I was answering.."

Sorry. Sometimes I start ranting about things & I kind of forget I'm in a public forum. Then I go back & read what I wrote & think it sounds ridiculous. That's why I deleted that comment. Also, my thoughts go out to those killed & injured in Boston & their families. It's just very sad.

message 2432: by Bobby (new)

Bobby (bobbej) | 1375 comments Some of my TV camera brothers were striking all the cable and had just finished that area about 20 minutes earlier. There were several cameras there because it was the finish line. All workers accounted for. Unbelievably cowardly.

message 2433: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Unbelievably cowardly. Completely. By the sounds of it, they didn't even martyr themselves. Which makes them an even bigger coward if that is possible.

Hopefully all the footage and phones from the time before the explosions will pick these guys up and they will get arrests.

message 2434: by Nate (new)

Nate | 416 comments Anne, I don't understand why you think it's appropriate to use the violent and terrifying deaths of human beings as a cue for your opinions on how pious the average American is or isn't.

message 2435: by Nate (new)

Nate | 416 comments Also let me add that I would never want to tell someone they can't express their opinion, regardless of whether or not I agree with it. But it just seems kinda tasteless.

message 2436: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Hmmm, religious conversations just never seem to turn out well. It's even harder online than in person to keep it from getting ugly.
Not that I want to stop anyone from expressing their opinions, I happen to have quite strong opinions on the subject myself, but I think we should keep this conversation on the tragedy itself....

message 2437: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Apr 15, 2013 07:38PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I'm with Dawn. We have to stay off the religion topic. It is a quagmyre and people will only get their feelings hurt.
People of all different religions have different outlooks on things that happen in the world. Sometimes it is difficult to know where people are coming from when their views are based on a faith. Whether that Faith be Christian, Muslim, Hindu..whatever..
So we have to give opinions based on religious Faith, if one does not agree with that opinion, a wide berth when it comes to a hot button issue.

:) Okay?

message 2438: by [deleted user] (new)

Okay. Although this is not a bar, the first lesson my father taught me, after I reached legal age...Never discuss religion or politics in a bar. It will only lead to trouble. I tried it out when I was young & dumb, and it turns out he was right.

message 2439: by Crystal (new)

Crystal Bryan | 305 comments I was so heartened to see the runners who ran over to the injured instead of finishing, once they realized what was happening. Same with other bystanders, they just ran over to help. There are more good people than bad in the world. Seeing it in action was a wonderful reminder.

message 2440: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I read this on Facebook today:

When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.

~ Fred Rogers

Nice to know it's true. :)

message 2441: by Nate (new)

Nate | 416 comments It really has nothing to do with Anne's religious ideas it's that she chose an utterly tasteless time and place to voice them. I'm sorry if I'm coming off as rude, but honestly that's ridiculous. I'm not even sure where the abortion thing even came from.

We have a similar upbringing in Australia. In australia you are taught not to discuss, politics, religion or money. :-)

Of course now that I have been mixing it up for years with people from all around the world on Goodreads I do tend to discuss all three more than I ever did....but I try not to because I always get myself in trouble.

Hi mate,
Yeah, I see what you are saying. But I think the shock of the bombings combined with her seeing something on tv that deeply offended her Faith may have prompted her to want express a Random Thought (the thread title). :-)
Sometimes the thoughts people post here are genuinely random. Usually there's a catalyst (in this case the bombings) but I think Anne just wanted to express how she felt in that moment.

Terri wrote: "Derek wrote: "Okay. Although this is not a bar, the first lesson my father taught me, after I reached legal age...Never discuss religion or politics in a bar. It will only lead to trouble. I tried ..."

I hear you Terri. That is the main reason I deleted that comment last night. I was speaking from the heart, but then realized that many people would probably misunderstand what I was trying to express.

message 2445: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I am a 'heart speaker' too and it gets me in so much sh#t. Hahaha. Just ask Dawn. She's seen me dig many a hole for myself.
I always make the mistake of thinking that other people are as respectful of opposing opinion as I try to be. But this is not always the case. :-)
Then of course on Goodreads there are different cultures at play. Different things mean different things to different people and cultures. What is okay for me to say, may not be accepted as okay in, for example, America.

message 2446: by Dawn (new)

LOL. Good for you Terri, for having the guts to speak your mind freely. I'm all for discussing opposing views respectfully. Unfortunately, many people take that sort of thing to seriously. That's why I only lasted a total of 10 days on facebook. Dawn, I'm seriously trying to learn to keep my mouth shut, but it's really hard.
