Terri | 19576 comments Hi David.
I rang him ten minutes ago. He has you to thank for me remembering. :D

Good that you are back in the rhythm with your writing, David.

David Krae (davidkrae) Thanks, Terri. :)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Byzantium I just started this book. The blurb mentioned historical fantasy so I did not read it with the group read. I had just finished a historical fantasy book and wasn't ready to jump into another. The only fantasy I have read in BYZANTIUM so far has been the dream variety.

Thanks Linda. Just checked the description on this one and added it to my list of "to-read".

Monica Davis I'm not sure what to make of this news article...fantasy meets fiction meets reality?

Reviving the Woolly Mammoth: Will De-Extinction Become Reality?

Biologists briefly brought the extinct Pyrenean ibex back to life in 2003 by creating a clone from a frozen tissue sample harvested before the goat's entire population vanished in 2000. The clone survived just seven minutes after birth, but it gave scientists hope that "de-extinction," once a pipedream, could become a reality.
Ten years later...

David Krae (davidkrae) Pretty neat. Now if only someone could find some Unicorn DNA! Or maybe a Pegasus. I suspect Unicorns would probably stab themselves into extinction and Pegases...Pegasi...Pegasuses..? were just a cool idea a la 'I wish my horse could fly', but who knows. ;)

Hi Linda,
There is no fantasy in Byzantium.
I don't know why anyone would shelve it as fantasy. Maybe because most of his other books are fantasy?

Hmmm, that's possibly our first? group read. Thread is here http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/7... if anyone is curious. I definitely didn't see any fantasy to this book when I read it.

Terri | 19576 comments I think it was our first. Our very, very first. Aww how cute. :]

Terri | 19576 comments I can't even remember anything that someone might call fantasy. Such as mythology. I often see people putting anything that includes a myth or legend onto a fantasy or mythology shelf. eg King Arthur, Robin Hood.

Perhaps, taking that into account, maybe some people might class Aidan as 'fantasy', I think the Aidan in Byzantium was supposed to be THE Aidan of Lindisfarne.

Eileen Iciek | 554 comments Yes, I agree, Byzantium by Stephen R. Lawhead is just good ole historical fiction. And fairly accurate, as novels that involve the Byzantine empire go.

Margaret Skea | 136 comments Am I allowed to share my excitement at finding I'm the featured writer today on the Federation of Writers (Scotland) blog, with a mini extract of my book? Hope this isn't against the rules - http://www.writersfederation.org.uk/b...

message 2065: by Linda (last edited Mar 16, 2013 10:11AM) (new)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Mea culpa. No mention of historical fantasy in the BYZANTIUM blurb. How did I get so confused? That is a rhetorical question since I was born that way.

I found where I got the fantasy info--PUBLISHERS WEEKLY. Its blurb states,
"Marketed as fantasy, the novel contains little overt supernatural content, although prayer is vital and dreams can be seen as omens."
And that is the end of this discussion.

Monica Davis Linda wrote: I found where I got the fantasy info--PUBLISHERS WEEKLY.

Linda, that's understandable. Lots of people shelved Byzantium as "fantasy" on Goodreads. Some also put it under "Christian fiction".

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments As I closed the door upon being handed A Morbid Taste for Bones and Silk Road I realised that this was the last time I will see my postman. I wonder if he will succumb to parcel delivery withdrawals.

message 2079: by Bobby (new)

Bobby (bobbej) | 1375 comments Doesn't your postman always ring twice?

message 2080: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments Hahah. He actually walks up to my flat's door and knocks. Alas, never twice.

But the replacement (holidays etc) post-people don't deliver to the door in a building, they just leave the parcels scattered on the foyer floor (currently in an old Vic house conversion).

She had me worried there for a second too. I thought she was swearing off book buying.

Terri | 19576 comments I know! That is why I was so surprised. :)

message 2084: by Leland (new)

Leland (lelandhw) I was already calculating the number of additional books that Terri and I would have to buy to make up for the publishers loss. :)

message 2085: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Aw man, I couldn't handle the financial burden. So I am glad D is still in the book buying game. :D

Still haven't quite sorted by Trojan computer issue out. The tech guys can't find it. It seems to have disappeared again. Confusing.
Trying to be online for limited periods until my computer gets the all clear.
