Mark | 1885 comments Well both my mum and my brother have had the vaccine, I am still waiting to be contacted.

May (mayzie) | 968 comments The vaccination process is speeding up in the US. It is being coordinated by the states; each with their own protocols & age groups. Many of our 65+ friends have received their 1st shot; 2nd being scheduled 3 - 4 weeks out depending on manufacturer. Bill & I are scheduled for Feb 26th. I’m just glad to have an appointment. Feels like a light at the end of the tunnel!! Be well. Stay safe!!

Soon be there fellah, its the over 65's from this Monday. They put a shout out this week for all over 70's & clinically extremely vulnerable who haven't been contacted yet to get in contact with the NHS so that nobody falls through the net.

I know, Adrian is younger than me, but since he has more medical issues than me plus he’s mum’s carer that’s why he got his first.

Terri | 19576 comments Vaccines have only just landed on our shores. I expect my parents will be in the first drop of vaccinations. Being over 70.
I think its Zeneca that will roll out. But, maybe I read that the Pfizer is here too.

Gosh, I am 80 but unable to get an appointment to have vaccinations. I hope your folks have better luck than I.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments I'm getting close to the cut off line for the vaccine (63). The state just announced that everyone over 65 is now eligible. I plan on getting it, in spite of the fact that I tested positive a couple of months ago.

I hope everyone in the US and esp Texas is coping with our winter storms this last couple of weeks. When Houston is colder than Salt Lake, you know something weird is going on!

That said, winter has FINALLY arrived. We have had a series of storms in the last week that has put 5+ feet of snow in the mountains. the snow pack has gone from 60% of normal to 85%. We just be able to drink this summer (and water the lawns) For the first time this winter I had to shovel the driveway/sidewalk :)

Terri | 19576 comments Poor old Texas. They're really doing it rough aren't they. What a disaster. I feel so bad for those suffering and without power or heat.

May (mayzie) | 968 comments And, those incredibly high electric Bill for 2 - 3 days of electricity!!! Insane. Unacceptable price gouging, in my opinion.

message 17166: by Marilyn (new)

Marilyn (mbk1857) | 415 comments In San Angelo (Wesr Texas) they got 11 inches, lost power for 1 hour at 3 different intervals but all is okay now. Having lived before, I was dumbfounded by the tv pictures.

message 17167: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments good to hear there are some parts of Texas that may have not been hit so hard ... or should I say, were able to recover quicker.

Andy | 1511 comments America doesn't seem to do well with natural disasters, I still recollect New Orleans and her people's in dire straits months after their brush with mother nature

message 17169: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments I think it's terrible of the utility company to gouge the price!! And those folks went without for so many days!

Eileen Iciek | 553 comments Andy wrote: "America doesn't seem to do well with natural disasters, I still recollect New Orleans and her people's in dire straits months after their brush with mother nature"

I wouldn't take the news stories too seriously. On TV, what bleeds, leads. TV does tend to make it sound the absolute worst possible. I have family in Texas, I've been to New Orleans since Katrina, I have family in the eye of the hurricane (Florida). There's insurance. People recover. It costs money, yes. Utility bills go up because the cost of power goes up, then they go back down when the cost of power goes down. People manage. If it was all that terrible, people wouldn't be living there.

Eileen, that was a voice of reason. Thank you for your sensible thoughts.

message 17173: by May (new)

May (mayzie) | 968 comments Eileen, you have said it well. However, I would add that the time between the Disaster and Recovery can be years and financially devastating. It does not help if the electric company is price gouging!! Even worse if they are able to automatically withdraw these outrageous payments from a bank account and drain your finances.

message 17174: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments Gosh, that is why I still pay bills the old-fashioned way: checks. Maybe I deceive myself that I have more control... You're right, there is usually a long time lag between what happened and final recovery.

message 17175: by Marilyn (new)

Marilyn (mbk1857) | 415 comments I heard that all seven members of the power board (all of whom lived out of state - figure that one out) have resigned and that the power company filed for bankruptcy. All of us (in the US at least) will be paying for the winter storm because of all the ruined farm produce.

message 17176: by Adrian (new)

Adrian Deans (adriandeans) | 293 comments In reference to the Custer comments on the previous page... fascinating chap. My favourite account of him is in one of the Flashman books. Those won't be everyone's cup of tea and would never even get published in these more enlightened times (even the title wouldn't make it past the editor), but they're so well researched. Astonishing detail.

No, but I figured out another way, which seems to work.

Help is a good idea in future for stuff, anyway. I hadn't thought of them.

Terri | 19576 comments How is everyone. Sorry I vanish from time to time for a month or two. My problem is that when I'm reading I'm active, but when I have a spell with no reading, I just don't get here because I have nothing to talk about!
I have had a couple months with very little reading interest (which happens when I get mentally busy with life) but last week I got back to a book I had been reading and I have the reading bug again.

message 17188: by Michaela (new)

Michaela | 98 comments Welcome back Terri and no worries about not talking about books! We all have other things to do or a slump from time to time.

Strict lockdown here, so not much going out, also because the weather is more like winter atm. Our libraries did click & collect though, so I ordered some books that I have to pick up this week. :)

Same here as far as library. I did have J&J shot but still only go out when I have to; I'm 80, after all. Now I read there are problems with J&J shot--oh well...

message 17191: by Michaela (new)

Michaela | 98 comments I heard about the J&J shot too Jane, so hope all will go well with you! At least they know how to treat the (very rare) thrombosis. I understand that many people are now anxious about the vaccination.

So it's open again?? It is so hard to keep track of what is and isn't allowed around here. There is no way I can keep up with other countries. :)

Still on the Aussie author kick??

message 17194: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I have been listening to a whole lot of super short audible books myself. I like the sense of accomplishment I get from finishing a story.

Also, super happy that the nicer weather has finally showed up, I get to go kayaking again. Going in the rain is doable but definitely not enjoyable, much better in the sun!

You know, I don't know a single bit of news on how Austria is going with the pandemic. I hope the lockdown does its job and minimizes the latest outbreak there, Michaela.

Terri | 19576 comments Heading into winter soon here in Australia. I usually look forward to winter as I don't like the heat. I love getting rugged up (and winter is the best time of year for my fashion style to flourish, with all my favourite coats coming out to play, and my boots and closed in shoes, lol). But this year, I wish the warm months would stick around for a little while longer.

message 17199: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Over here they are calling off the AstraZeneca jab for people under 50 because it is causing blood clots in that age group.
They've ordered more Pfizer, but it isn't due to arrive until the end of the year. So, we're not going to be a vaccinated nation any time soon.

message 17200: by Bobby (new)

Bobby (bobbej) | 1375 comments Most all in my town are vaccinated and last week he State rescinded the mask mandate. Normalizing slowly but surely.
