And more good news. My massage place has reopened. I haven't had a massage for over two months and I have got so stiff and sore.

May (mayzie) | 968 comments Margaret, I have a haircut tomorrow & a massage on Thursday!! I am sooo excited!!! Getting back to normal. Now, if I could meet friends for coffee ☕️

Simple things we took for granted are now so exciting, aren't they? I'm not sure I will ever take anything for granted again.

Marilyn (mbk1857) | 415 comments 1) Two weeks ago I got a pedicure on the QT. There were 3 operators plus their customers plus my husband waiting for me. All is us were desperate. After listening to us all talking about the secrecy of getting things done, my husband commented that the shop was like a Speak-Easy. You had to know the secret password in order to get in. Question: How many young people know what a Speak-Easy is these days. Of course, it was before my time, but I remember my parents talking about it
2) I just got a Emergency Alert on my cell phone: Riverside County is declaring a curfew tonight from 6pm to 6am. Ok. Wasn’t planning to go out anyway.

message 16806: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I have mostly figured out how to live without all the things I would routinely do or buy, but....the spa....for waxing. That is not something that is simple to do at home on your own and I am super excited to be going for an appointment.

And the parks have reopened!! So I can go kayaking again, that is the second most exciting thing.

Haha, the simple pleasures in life.

May (mayzie) | 968 comments I think we can agree that we all have a new appreciation for those simple thinks in our lives: a haircut, a walk in a park, lunch w my sister!! Enjoy the day!!

Allison | 1704 comments My eyebrows, man....

And at this point I’d let someone buzz cut all my hair off. Obviously not for vanity reasons but my hair is so thick and heavy, I get headaches and my neck hurts if it’s long enough to be near my shoulders. Salons are absolutely essential lol.

Tim Hodkinson (timhodkinson) | 577 comments I just did that - Number 2 all over. I couldn't stand my lockdown bouffant hair style any more. The downside is that it's revealed I've horrendous male pattern balding. I thought I'd die before I got old. :-/

Terri | 19576 comments So libraries are opening all over the place by the sounds, or at least, in Australia, the UK and US, by comments here. Great news.

Don't go overloading yourself. lol. 'panic lending'.
But at least you know what to do next time a pandemic hits. Book your full quota of books before the libraries shut. :-)

Bwahahahahahahha. Not possible at my library. There are NO limits on books. On CDs, games, and DVDs, but not on books.

message 16814: by happy (last edited Jun 08, 2020 07:52PM) (new)

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments we still have a 15 book limit on check outs, but in the last year or so, the powers that be did away with late fees.

The barbershops are also open - I went and had my ears lowered quite a bit a week ago. It was almost worth the price :D

As I've mentioned before - my hairline has receded all the way to the crown of my head :)

Clare O'Beara | 139 comments I am currently reading a library book The Fens: Discovering England's Ancient Depths
The Fens Discovering England's Ancient Depths by Francis Pryor
This would be fantastic research for anyone wishing to write ancient and Roman history. An archaeologist describes digs in the east of England from 1960s to now, discovering Bronze Age stock farming, Iron Age roundhouses, Roman roads and more.

Adrian Deans (adriandeans) | 293 comments One of the coolest things I ever saw was when I visited a (Australian) mate and his English wife in Oxford back in the 90s.

Her parents lived nearby in Didcot and the father had the quintessential Boy's Own life. He was an astrophysicist for British Aerospace, but in his spare time was running a proper archaeological dig in his own backyard (about half an acre). It was really professionally done - all properly layered and sculpted - and one of the rooms in the house was turned into a museum for what he'd found. He'd only, at the time, gone back as far as about 1800, but the stuff he'd unearthed was fascinating.

Poor chap's dead now so I've no idea what happened to his dig. Maybe Tony Robinson could take it over...

Yes, May, there is. I am about half way through the first draft. This one is set back in London during the Great Dock Strike of 1889.

Andy | 1511 comments Jus to report back that I really enjoyed the above storytelling by Mary-Ann Ochota & Jason Buck who mixed actual historical artefacts (Deer antler headress found at Star Carr C 11,000BC - The Lewis Chessman C 1100AD - Skull Bowls C 12,500BC found at Cheddar Gorge - Death Mask/Helmet from Sutton Hoo C600AD) giving around 10mins on each's historical context, then telling a "story" of their meaning or perhaps origins by ways of introducing characters...... for instance the Skull Bowls involved a Shamen & a hunt of Aurachs along with a ritual honouring of a fallen hunter.... hence the skull bowl.

All done through "zoom" when you purchase a ticket through Eventbrite then join the storytellers in their studies. The hour of storytelling is value alone I thought but the duo were great fun, very knowledgeable & spent half an hour before the show started & half an hour afterwards conversing with us the audience about all sorts of historical stuff... really enjoyable & recommend if anyone was slightly peaked by it. You dont need a webcam to join Zoom, you jus access & watch for those not familiar & can join in through chat.

They have another one about "Romans" on 22nd August but Jason Buck does "storytelling" as a profession & very good he is too.

https://www.facebook.com/events/72626...

https://www.facebook.com/pg/JasonBuck...

Not something I would normally watch or follow but in these times when getting to events live is tricksy...... well :)

We've started the second wave of infection and it is worse than the first wave was.

Change Trump for Bolsonaro and this same comment could be written by me, Although his problem is not lack of courage, it's lack of humanity.

Mark, I'm pretty sure Peter Ackroyd discusses it in his book Thames: The Biography. I remember reading about it. I no longer have the book so I can't look it up to confirm.

That is fascinating. The book I am currently working on is set around the London Docks in Wapping. I am now wondering if I can fit that information in somewhere. I love popping bits of history into my books as asides.

Yeah, Melbourne is in all sorts of strife down there. The rest of the country are opening borders and going back to normal life, but poor old Victoria is in big trouble with Covid. All because people weren't being responsible in certain suburbs. Not fair for all those who did the right thing.

Andy | 1511 comments For those in the UK, how are your library's reopening?

Dorset says "we're open" but you can't actually go in & browse/select books.... you have to book a "collection slot" which I jus did.... its not until 20th July @ 16:20 & dont be late!! :) by choosing some categories they then select books for you & put them in a "bundle" for you to pick-up.... I ticked H/F amongst others..... wonder how many "romance" books I will end up with lols

We choose online from the library system: libraries in four counties, then put holds. [I've been doing this for years, already.] We then call for appointments and the books are brought out to us when we show up for the appointment. I hope the library will eventually allow a limited number of people to come in--10 to 25? Of course, mask wearing is mandatory.

Thats how ours used to work with Dorset being part of counties West so you could order from across the region giving a great selection. Currently NO books are being swapped between libraries, only returned to point of origin as they are returned (we're allowed to now return/drop them thro letterboxes) so my "bundle" will be whats on the library shelves at my local.... think it'll be a while before we can reserve books from across the region like we used too be able too.... all part of the new "normal" :)
