I thought some of you might be interested in this. More artifacts discovered in the Thames.https://www.flickr.com/photos/thamesd...
Very interesting. Thank you for sharing. I’m not sure of all of the items but I did recognize King Henry VIII, Queen Victoria and, I think the Portcullis emblem of the Beaufort family who were cousins of Henry IV and V through John of Gaunt and Kathryn Swynford.
Just read about the passing of Robert Massey, the writer of the excellent “Nicholas and Alexandra” that shed light on the Russian Revolution. He was 90.
To simply chime in here... I have to ask “who votes for these choices”. I am so glad that I read for my own enjoyment because none of these are on my lists. IMHO

Nice one, absolute treasure trove of finds spanning hundreds of years

Some really interesting items, thanks for sharing.
May wrote: "Incredible, Tamara. I find this fascinating! Thank you so very much for sharing!!"I grew up in Surrey, England. We had a tributary of the River Thames flowing at the bottom of the garden. I used to love canoeing down the river. I love the Thames because it reminds me of my childhood. I'm fascinated by anything to do with it. So much history buried in its mud.
I recently read Peter Ackroyd's Thames: The Biography which was an enjoyable read. One of my favorite reads this year was the novel Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield. She did a wonderful job of capturing the mystery and magic and majesty of the river.

Do you like fantasy, Tamara? Ben Aaronvitch has a wonderful series called "Rivers of London" where the goddesses of the rivers are major characters.

The goddess of the river Tyburn is my favourite. She's a complete cow!

As Margaret says they are very good.
I gave up on GR Choice a couple years ago. I always struggle to find books I know and would even read. once upon a time you could at least find Bernard's new Uhtred books on the list, but not anymore.
Actually, strike that, I just had a look at this hist fic selections and there were some there that I knew of. None I'd read but at least I recognised a few this year.
Only ones I cared for were the Mark Lawrence. Different Genre from this list, but he’s wonderful. Worth checking out!
Renata wrote: "Only ones I cared for were the Mark Lawrence. Different Genre from this list, but he’s wonderful. Worth checking out!"I voted for him in both fantasy and science fiction categories.
woohoo. Completed my Goodreads Reading Challenge. After a tough six months where I was reading nothing and lost complete interest in reading, I thought I would never make it. :)
I'm definitely out of my slump now. I had to change genres for a bit to get out of it though. In fiction, I've read hist fic nearly exclusively for ten years, so a change in genre is what I needed to reboot. I can feel myself wanting to get back to hist fic again, now that I have had a year of reading mostly literary and crime/thriller.

Right now I'm reading one in the "Golden Age of British mysteries": no, not Agatha Christie.
I hear you @Terri with the need to change genres some times. Psychological thrillers have served me well when I needed something easy and absorbing. For some reason I'm going through a spell of reading chick-lit romances *gasp!!* I think I'm having an end of year mental breakdown. Hopefully the holidays will help cure me!😂 whatever works...
My Christmas starts today and runs through the Super Bowl! Let me say an early Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and may your team win!
Thank you all for your many reviews, comments and suggestions. I recently joined the group because I'm hoping to drawn down on the mysteries and ramp up the historical fiction next year. In the past few weeks I have used the boards here to research Christmas presents for my husband who loves the Ancient and Middle Ages periods. I found quite a few and he was a happy camper this morning.

Not to smug or anything, but I've actually lost a couple of lbs. It has taken a whole lot of will power and wife who is willing to slap my hands as they reach for something tasty :)
We actually had a White Christmas - at least in the morning. All the snow we got over Thanksgiving has melted, but we had an inch or less (just enough to cover the grass) after we went to bed Christmas Eve and before we got up the next morning. It was gone by noon though :)

Did anybody else watch The Witcher? If I was going to star rate it...I'd say a 3 1/2. The love story element was corny. Not enough cool fight scenes like the one at the end of episode one.(although I'll give Cavill 5 stars all day long for whatever he does!!!!!)

I’ve been wanting to binge it since it came out but something or other has kept me away so far. Maybe right after New Years when the chaos settles down.
I’m with you on Cavill! All the stars!!!!!
I just noticed on my profile that in the beginning of January 2020, I'll have been a member of GR for 11 years. I want to say "that's half my life!" But that would be wishful thinking...by a couple decades. Lol.

The only list I voted on was the very first one and skipped the finals.
