I highly recommend this one."

I thought #3 outstanding of the Rome series.
Got confused there for a sec. :)So that's what I was saying.
Manda in her female author form wrote about a real woman. Boudica.
But Manda in her male/unisex persona wrote about a fictional character. Pantera and whats his face..the Roman in the last two in that series.
She included some real people on the peripheral, but her main characters were fictional under M.C.
#3 and #4 I own, but have not read yet. I started #3, but then had to put it aside for some reason..forget what now.
In #3 it was Demalion of Macedonia--I guess a Greek. I don't remember a Roman. I didn't read #4, or if I did, it made no impression on me.

If something is crap, I'll tell you, don't worry about that.
Terri wrote: "Haha. You offering, Mark? Maybe when I have finally dried the ink on my completed copy I'll tap a few of the old stalwarts on the shoulder and see if they want to read some."Tap me.....still lurking!
You are definitely an old (young though) stalwart. You've been here since the beginning pretty much. :)
Terri wrote: "haha. How come people get to use emoticons on GR now. :)Must be able to on my tablet. I haven't checked. Can't on my laptop."
I have an iPad 3/4, well an iPad anyway due to my Samsung galaxy getting the black screen of death after having it for over 5 years.
I only found out I could post emojis after pressing the wrong button and they appeared in the keyboard section.
Ace wrote: "All the best Terri (secretly that is). You'll be the Elena Ferrante of Ancient and Medieval Fiction."
Thanks. :) Now I need to go look at who Elena Ferrante is. Lol

So far so good for me and Samsung Note 10.1. On my second one. First one I 've had a four years and it still works, but crashes a fair bit on busy websites.
I use it still for browsing when my new one is flat and for my gmail.
I am going to try the emoticons on my Android keyboard.
😂🤣🤗
I had a look at Elena Ferrante. So nobody knows who Elena is? Don't even know if she's a man or woman? That's very mysterious.
It is indeed very mysterious but there was a journalist who tracked increasing "wealth" of Italian author Domenico Starnone and made some assumptions about his wife Anita Raja, a translator of novels being behind the gains due to her income, as the writer of the Elena Ferrante novels. It has not yet been confirmed either way if she is Elena, or that the author is actually a woman.
I've read a couple of Elena Ferrante's novels. They were quite good. I thought the best one was The Days of Abandonment.
Now Terri, how can I buy the book if I don't know what one you wrote? Don't be shy!Just sign it Terri-the-Fearless-Leader. Very subtle.

Simona-the-Subtle 😎
Andy wrote: "Doing another on "The European discovery of China" which is great as its taking us through all the dynasties from the Zhou to the Ming which is a completely alien history for me - all we ever learnt was about Marco Polo & the Opium Wars!"Now, now, Andy, isn't "alien" a hostile word? Sometimes I feel so disheartened at trying to arouse Westerners' interest in Chinese history. I hope the course you're taking is going to at least instill a little more curiosity...

Haha. :-) I'm not sure how well that would go down with an agent. Sounds like an author of a self help book.

I often wonder why Robyn Young hides her real name. I get why she wants her books published under a pseudonym. But her face is out there. Why not her real name?
Alice wrote: "Andy wrote: "Doing another on "The European discovery of China" which is great as its taking us through all the dynasties from the Zhou to the Ming which is a completely alien history for me - all ..."Only if you perceive aliens as being hostile.....Klingon's or Romulans perhaps??? :) me I term it as the unknown which i used in this context.
I took the course as I know next to nothing about Chinese history, it's not on our syllabus in schools bar what I related to earlier & as an adult Ive only read about Genghis Khan as his clash with the Song dynasty, been really good so far & its from a European perspective (Spanish University is running the course) & not British..... even more incredible I did some further research on the Terra Cotta warriors & there is a museum about them in a town about 10 miles away from me that I didnt know existed.... so of to see them soon as.
Andy wrote: "Alice wrote: "Andy wrote: "Doing another on "The European discovery of China" which is great as its taking us through all the dynasties from the Zhou to the Ming which is a completely alien history..."I was just pulling your leg, Andy :) Good for you that you're immersing in the subject. Happy learning! Did you know that the Manchus of the Qing dynasty belonged to the Jurchen tribe of the Jin Dynasty (1115 - 1234) which at one time co-existed with Southern Song and Liao Dynasty (the Khitans)? The Jin Jurchens, after defeating the Khitans of Liao, were a fierce match for the Mongols under Genghis.
Apologies fellow A&Mers for not being in group much over the last two weeks. Hubby has been off work for 3 weeks holidays and we have been (as the saying goes) flat out like a lizard drinking. Trying to catch up on a lot of the really physical work on the farm and on the renovation. He's got one more week of hols to go and then things will be back to normal for me.
I'll get the Poll done at the usual time (some time from the 7th to the 9th US time), but won't be around the group chatting much until after next weekend.
In the meantime happy reading!
Enjoy your time with hubby and his holidays, Terri!I've been in Hong Kong for almost a week now, and have been enjoying gatherings with sister and cousins and close friends. The weather has been a little too warm for me, but OK. Thrilled to see my new book at local bookstores! Looking forward to more gatherings with friends, hiking on an outlying island, and the book launch on the 15th!
Enjoy your time with the Spouse Terri - Get everything caught up and we will be here when you get back!On a different note - Our house remodel it finally drawing to a close.
the garage is done and usable, but there is no power yet. We are waiting for Rocky Mountain Power to move the meter. The contractors have pulled off all the old siding and I now have a "Naked house" as my 6 yr old grand daughter said
They will start putting the new siding up Monday (I hope, we have a winterish storm coming in tomorrow)
Getting the power to the garage has been a joke - The city inspector approved it to be moved 3 weeks ago. The contractor said it would take 7-10 working days to get the meter moved and the power to the garage. Yesterday, my wife called after the contractor could get nowhere with them. The upshot was that they hadn't scheduled the work because they need the home owners approval because it was "New" Construction. They didn't tell anybody of the requirement! The clock finally started yesterday.Sometimes I'm just too damn nice!
On David Cassidy's passing - sad only 67, I'm only 7 yrs younger - man I'm getting old :)
He was one of my sisters heart throbs way back when, along with Bobby Sherman.
Wow happy I would be so mad, you are nicer than me...67. Yes its young. Apparently he had dementia. Same age as my mum when she was diagnosed with vascular dementia too. My body clock is ticking. Eek!!!
To all my US friends here on A&M - Happy Thanksgiving! To my non-US friends - Happy 23rd of November :)
I think that takes care of everybody :D
Happy thanksgiving to those who celebrate. I saw some footage on YouTube, in and out of LA red brake lights one way, headlights the other. About 10 lanes of traffic. Looked amazing but personally I would have gone the day before...
Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate! I'm just back home from my Hong Kong trip and still adjusting to Vancouver time :)
Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate it (think I just stole Ace's words). I'll be on Gr intermittently in the coming weeks. Had some sad news and family tragedies. I'll get on to do next Poll in time and I'll still get on GR, I just won't be as active and as chipper.
Keep enjoying your books and don't worry about me!

I'm so sorry to hear that, Terri. Sending comforting thoughts.

Sending you good thoughts through cyberspace.
Oh no, Terri!! You just returned to us too!! But I’m sorry your family has been faced with such sad occurrences :(
happy wrote: "Getting the power to the garage has been a joke - The city inspector approved it to be moved 3 weeks ago. We have been trying to get windows in the top story of our house for a week. Fortunately it's not terribly cold yet so the holes in my house aren't as concerning as they normally would be. The contractor would have been done by now but it was too windy for him to work one day last week. He called me at work saying he nearly fell off his scaffolding. Hopefully everything gets finished before it really gets cold and snowy.
Thankyou guys for the hugs and support! It is a bit of a trifecta. A couple weeks back I was told I had to have a major surgery which has some life threatening complications. I'm now on a waitlist. Don't know if it is happening before Christmas or after. In the same week, my Mum was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer (her operation this week coming), and a couple days after her diagnosis, when my Mum and Dad told my grandad about her breast cancer, he took a turn and died. His funeral was two days ago.Been a very tough and emotional couple weeks.
Whoa, Terri... are you able to breathe? Sending you & your loved ones hugs and prayers and the strength to make it through each day!
