Or, do you mean reading two different books at the same time? Either Series or standalones? With me, reading alone helps with retention--no audiobooks or music in the background. Often if I'm in the house alone I read out loud.
I always read alone. I take notes while reading (this is probably one reason why my pace is slow) and am in the habit of writing reviews. I think taking notes and writing reviews afterwards help with retention.
I read anywhere. On the train. On a bus. In the middle of a toddler's birthday. what I manage to absorbe is directly proportional to the interest that the book raises in me.... :-)This summer I will tackle Moby Dick again and I hope it will go better than the previous times....that book is my nemesis.
In the middle of a toddler's party!!!?? Holy cow girl. You have your concentration fully under control. :)Like Alice, I find writing a review helps with retention. Plus, when I do forget, I need those reviews to jog my memory.
I cannot read in loudy places, I already have attention issues, if the place is loudy I cannot concentrate. It's a lame.
I agree w Alice & Teri... reflecting & synthesizing my thoughts for a review, clarifies my emotional reaction to that book!!!
Always used to read when on the go & pretty much anywhere if the book was engrossing but unable to now so only when "static" & at homeReviews ive found are essential for when you pick up the next book in the series! Gotta need a recap
Toddlers parties! lols no musical chairs, pass the parcel for you then
I also have to be lying down to read for long periods. My neck gets stiff and sore when looking down too long. So I can only read long stints if reclining. Short stints I'm okay.
I was under the impression that this was the final Game of Thrones season. But I thought I heard it was the penultimate. Does anybody know?I suppose I could Google it, but I don't want to see any spoilers. I have Ep 1 of current season on hard drive ready to watch. Hubby is away though. Not allowed to watch any GoT while he's away.
Going to try
again. Im in a better frame of mind this time. And Terri, you're going to love GoT current season. That's all I'm going to say.....no spoilers from me , but sure tempted!! Lol
I heard something like that, about the season, but I am not sure too.It was a good episode. I liked it. But will not comment here, I will use spoiler to it.

Re the final season of GOT I believe they have broken it up so that you will see a few episodes this year and a few the next year but they are all a part of Season 7. Can someone pkease validate or correct this?
As I live on a boat and have no TV and I can't download the torrent as I don't really want to risk being deported from Portugal, so, I have a friend sending me via email an overview of each episode.
I've read they are planning 8 regular length episodes for season 7 and 6 for next year's season 8. Enjoy Episode 1, Terri! There is evidently talk of future "spin off" series after GOT is over, based on G.R.R. Martin's work - unclear if GOT's based or other works? The current team who adapted GOT books has stated they will not be involved in the future HBO/Martin ventures. Interesting (perhaps).
Then again, I just read there will be 7 episodes in Season 7, and some of them longer than normal. So who knows? And at this point, That would make season 8 anyone's guess. I did enjoy the first episode.
Hmm..all this positivity towards Ep 1! You guys better not be setting me up to be too excited only to find it boring. Hehe. So I guess we can't expect it to truly go off this year then. The war to end all wars etc..winter has come etc.. That stuff I was expecting this year, but won't get it until 2018.
Kind of gathering of the clans first episode & setting us up for the series, quite enjoyed it. For me we need a partial conclusion this year & the culmination next, would hate it to drag past its sell-by date as some series have a tendency to do.
Just finished the new episode, agree with Andy’s sentiments. That first scene made the hair on the back of my neck stand up! Next Sunday can’t come soon enough.
For me, I feel by not finishing it this year is dragging it passed the sell by date. I think this should be the last season. I was prepared for it.
Interesting reading the comments, as a huge fantasy fan of long standing I have never bothered watching the series of game of thrones, its just never seemed to draw me in to it.

I wasn't into it at first, Mark & Margaret. Kept thinking "This is what everyone's making a big fuss about?!"But I think season three/four did it for me. Now I love it.
Or it could just be that I'm obsessed with Jon Snow....
Margaret wrote: "Me either, Mark. Tried to read the first of the books and thought it was crap."Ditto! Double ditto! I made it thru the first and dnf the 2nd.
@Mark: I have read and enjoyed the first books, a bit less the others (but still, I did enjoy them) because I didn't like that GRRM divided the characters between books. But I didn't watch the series because movies seldom fulfill my expectations when I love the book.
I didn't like the tv series either. I persisted reluctantly for many years. It was only the 2016 season that got me interested. Before that I was forcing myself to watch it because I had watched the first season and felt I was then trapped. Had to follow it to its completion.
Funny--I liked Season 1 of Vikings, but I disliked the first episode of Season 2 and just never persisted. I don't know if Vikings is still being made or if it was ended.

Currently jus finished part 1 of season 4 which has 20 episodes, so another 10 to go next year

I tend to agree with you when it comes to book vs film where film only occasionally surpasses a book..... I think GOT is actually better in film as the books (as they progress) become more confusing / have less impact / become a little boring..... in the series thy're have been quite a few subtle changes & all for the best & the story flows a lot better. In fact i somehow doubt the book series will ever be finished........?

As I've gotten older, for the most part, if I don't like a book, tv [standalone or series] I just stop and don't continue--life's too short! Cases in point: "Vikings" and Riches' Empire Roman series [after Books 1 and Book 2]. After expressing curiosity about and interest in his new series on GR, Riches even wrote to me and said for me not to bother reading it; he didn't think I'd like it. GOT the same--Book 1 and dnf Book 2. No interest in television show from the start.

You're probably right -- the author will probably keep on until he dies. They are such a fantastic success and making him money hand over fist!
Just caught up on episode 2 tonight. Loved it. Jon Snow heading for Dany is pretty intriguing too! Decided to start Book 1 a few days ago can't put it down. It helps me remember so much from early episodes. Especially the Mad King and his descendants. Thinking the end is now near.
Nate - that pretty much sums it up! So much awesomeness I could barely tell what was going on - I recently re-watched some of season 1 and goodness have their effects improved! Euron is a madman - and Theon? What was up with that? All fascinating and new books are starting to feel superfluous:)
Watch your spoilers folks! I have only seen Ep 1 of GOT. (Which had lots of cool stuff as promised).Vikings lost me after Season 1. Like Andy though, I have to watch until the end. I can't give up until it gives up and goes away for good.
Jane wrote: "Andy wrote: "Simona wrote: "@Mark: I have read and enjoyed the first books, a bit less the others (but still, I did enjoy them) because I didn't like that GRRM divided the characters between books...."Actually..... Lost in the translation that comment..... :) but because of the way the show has differed from the books which were getting a little staid/lost I dont believe he will write them as they have differed so much.

I would say book 3 has seen subtle little changes. Book 1 was verbatim, scene by scene but there after characters roles have diminshed/added for me. The main MC's are fairly consistent but I found that the tv series flowed better than the books from 3 onwards. To me its like he stopped writing as he'd lost his way & then once the tv series started being written/filmed it all flowed back to him again & its made more sense in film than in book? That make sense? :)

Does reading alone or listening alone help with retention???
Any though..."
HI Missy. I'm a little confused. Do you mean back to back books in a series?
