Good riddance to those Request notifications. Haha. :) Not like I could turn them off either. Had to know when Requests were there waiting for approval.

I hope it works better this time :)
FWIW, having spent a couple of yrs in Japan as a young man, I would like to see more Asia centric HF also.
For that matter, I would like to read more centered in the Holy Roman Empire and points east
Maybe we need a thread where people can leave suggestions for non Western-centric historical fiction reads?
We have some Asia threads in our Era Folders. Please, if anyone thinks I have not given a thread to an Asian era where there is enough books to justify it, let me know and I'll include it. I'd love to see a light shone on Asia centric HF. That can only be a positive thing.
This means India as well. The books don't have to be written by Westerners.
If anyone is interested, there's a list called History Through Novels: Pre-1900s China, and I voted for 17 books:https://www.goodreads.com/list/user_v...

I'm off on holiday to London tomorrow, so won't be around for a couple of weeks. Please try not to terrorise Terri. :D
Have a wonderful holiday. Wish I could join you. We'll all be here when you get back waiting to hear how it went.
Thanks guys. It's going to be a busy time. I've got friends from Wales coming up the first weekend. Then next Wednesday a friend from Bristol arrives to spend 5 days with me. This is without catching up with a few friends who actually live in London.
I arrive on Thursday.Friday I'm planning on walking to Southwark and environs.
Saturday I'm going to an exhibition at the Tate Britain.
Sunday I'm off to the Tower. :D
Haha. When you get out of the Tower, let us know what gruel really tastes like. :)I can never remember how to pronounce Southwark. I had an ancestor come from there. I mentioned it to my Pommie tiler and he said it's pronounced Sow ork. Or something like that.

Southwark, confusingly, is pronouced Suth-ick. *grins* You can always tell the tourists, they pronounce it phonetically.
That's what my tiler said. I knew I'd be saying it wrong when I said Southwark to him. He laughed at me and said don't say it like that to a Londoner, they'll know you're a tourist.I thought, yeah, because the thick Aussie accent wouldn't give me away first.
I'm lucky, my accent is a blend of Aussie & Kiwi and I tend to sound English. I don't get taken for a tourist, which is great. The fun thing is when tourists stop me to ask for directions. :D
Another pronunciation giveaway is Holborn. It's pronounced Ho-bin. :D

Enjoy the Tate, Margaret. It's got a beautiful Waterhouse painting of The Lady of Shalott. And they used to have a room in the corner with Blake's watercolors. I haven't been there in years. I'm sure you'll love it.
Safe travels.
I'm going early, Tamara, just to see that painting. It's one of my favourites. Along with Millais' "Ophelia", which they also have. :)

I haven't been able to take myself back to London since my mother died. There's so much of it I miss. But I just can't bring myself to go back there even though it's been over 15 years since her death.

Oh I see it now. Cripes, She posted while I was posting so I didn't see it. Sorry Lia, that I missed your post. Looks like I was being rude.

I went to parallel universe. Took a while to find my way back. :D

Naaah! I didn't feel like you were being rude. Don't sweat it! :)
Have a great time Margaret. I love the Tate. I've spent many happy days and hours there (used to be married to a guy from Wandsworth)...he wasn't into art, I was, it was my hang out in London when he was out with his mates ;) Enjoy and safe travels!
Margaret - please visit Whistler's Nocturne: Blue and Silver - Chelsea for me? Thx. When all is said and done, I suppose I'm still an expat Americanist when it comes to Art. Love the stories about lawsuits between Ruskin & Whistler - there is a great HF in there somewhere lol! Love the John Constables at the Tate too...that man could paint the English countryside like no one else...

Just turned the group Public again. Saves Margaret and I a bit of work as we no longer need to log in to accept joining requests.
(A Private Group means people have to ask to join. A Public Group means people can join without approval).
I went 'by request only' a few years back to have a bit more control over spammers.
Decided to risk it again.
Now we are public again, (unless GR has changed since we went Private) your two or three most recent comments in group will show up on your profile timeline.
This is not a group setting this is a Goodreads setting.
