Jane | 3480 comments Same here. We've been to one of those "Medieval Times" places where they do have jousting.

message 13805: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments I saw jousting twice when I was in the UK last year. Brilliant to watch.

message 13806: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Jousting must be an exciting game to watch! I remember I was stunned when I watched the jousting scene in the movie "Ivanhoe".

message 13807: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments It is Alice. I went to the Loxton Joust last year, and also got to see some at the Tower of London. They hold jousts in the old moat. Fantastic to watch.

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments By the by, you mob had best behave yourself for the next few weeks. I'm off to London on Monday, and Terri will have the reigns all to herself. :D

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Have fun in London Margaret! I'm envious :)

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments One of the things I want to do when I retire is spend 3 or 4 months in GB, with at least a month in London.

My family and I spend a couple of weeks in England back in 08 - just enough time to whet the appatite :)

There was an article in an English newspaper today to say that English Heritage are pushing to have jousting promoted as an Olympic sport. The writer thought it would be more popular than dressage.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments I'm really looking forward to Fall. It's been 100+ (38 C) degrees for 5 consecutive days and it isn't supposed to "cool" down till the middle of next week (mid 90s). Thankfully we don't have any humidity, so it is bearable.

message 13816: by Ace (new)

Ace (aceonroam) | 19 comments We have humidity and heat here. Summer is not really over till about the end of October :(

Having said that, it is a gorgeous looking day outside as I sit here under my aircon.

message 13817: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) It's been hot these last few days here too - around 26 C. I know, Ace, by Hong Kong standards, this is "cool" hehe!

message 13818: by Ace (new)

Ace (aceonroam) | 19 comments We only have 2 months left here in Honkers Alice, we bought a catamaran in Cape Town so we are moving at the end of September. Yay!

message 13819: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Oh, how nice, Ace! I'm so happy for you. So it looks like I will miss you by a month and a few days. But I wish you smooth sailing and fun of a life time! Yay! Please do keep in touch.

message 13820: by happy (last edited Jul 29, 2016 06:37PM) (new)

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments The last week in July and the first week in August are statistically the hottest time of the year for us. So hopefully it will really start cooling off soon. The weather said we've had 11 days of 100+ temps this year, no where near a record, but triple what is was last year.

Plus on the 8th I'm heading down to Cedar City for a week to attend the Utah Shakespeare Festival. Cedar is up in the mountains, (5000+ feet) so it's a bit cooler :)

message 13821: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Good for you happy! I always envy you Americans for having all those open air Shakespeare performances :)

message 13822: by happy (last edited Jul 29, 2016 07:17PM) (new)

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments The USF is opening a new Shakespeare Theater this year. Their old one (the Adams) had too many problems to upgrade. I'm anxious to see the differences from their old one. Both are open air and about the same size (800+), Elizabethan/Globe type buildings.

If are ever in Southern Utah in the Summer (not the best time of year to be in Southern Utah :)) and are interested here is the web site - www.bard.org

Ace (aceonroam) | 19 comments I know Alice its crazy. When I first heard of the coup I admit I was looking forward to the military over throwing the current government. They need a fresh new leader, someone who will prioritise education over religion. But alas it was not to be. In fact, I can't work out what actually happened LOL. Crazy.

We will stay in remote southern coastal areas. Lots of historical places along there and yummy food.

Had to share one secret - my novel will be published early next year :)

It's been 100+ with lots of humidity [plus heat index - south-western US members know what I'm talking about] but that's okay because I've been in CANADA since the beginning of June! I love my fiancé and always want to spend time with him but there is a 2nd reason I schedule my summer trip July - September! :D

Which part of Canada are you in Kimber? Toronto summers are hot and humid, while Vancouver (I live in Richmond) has quite pleasant summers (average high is 22 to 24 C). I always schedule my home visits to Hong Kong for November/December, because those are the most pleasant months weatherwise; my other reason is to spend time with my brother and sister and old school pals who live there :)

message 13834: by Ace (new)

Ace (aceonroam) | 19 comments Typhoon Nida has just passed through Hong Kong overnight. Lots of trees down, flooding, but not as bad as things could have gotten.
We have had the morning off work which is the bright side to typhoons in HK :)

message 13835: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Ace, nowadays typhoons in Hong Kong are nowhere near as fierce and destructive as they used to be in the old days (60s and 70s).

Ace (aceonroam) | 19 comments Alice wrote: "Ace, nowadays typhoons in Hong Kong are nowhere near as fierce and destructive as they used to be in the old days (60s and 70s)."

This is my second in 2 years. Mr Ace who has lived in windy Wellington is always quick to point out that in NZ they call this a 'strong wind' LOL. The hype is definitely scarier than the real thing, but touch wood we have not had a bad experience here.

Kimber (kimberlibri) | 785 comments Alice wrote: "Which part of Canada are you in Kimber? Toronto summers are hot and humid, while Vancouver (I live in Richmond) has quite pleasant summers ..."

I'm in Edmonton at the moment. It has been a bit humid lately but the average temp is around 24C [75F] so it balances out. My fiancé lives and works here but both sets of our boys parents live in the Okanagan Valley in BC which is absolutely gorgeous. I imagine the weather there is quite like Richmond or Vancouver. I spend half the year in Texas [I'm a US citizen and I have medical issues-my surgeon is in the Dallas area] where this week the average temperature is 39C [102F] with a heat index of 43C [110F] so the weather up here feels like a DREAM! I absolutely love it and can't wait to be here year round....and yes, I've dealt with 5+ Edmonton winters so I know the downside :D

PS: For those that don't know...Heat Index = a quantity expressing the discomfort felt as a result of the combined effects of the temperature and humidity of the air i.e. 'It's 99F out there but with the heat index it feels like 113F'

message 13838: by happy (new)

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments As much as an army brat grows up anywhere, I grew up in Oklahoma - the summers there are down right miserable!

I much prefer Utah's desert summers :) I complain 'bout the heat, but with the 10-15% humidity, it's really not bad. Plus, being a desert an all - the mornings are down right comfortable :D

message 13839: by Alice (last edited Aug 02, 2016 05:13PM) (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Yes, humidity makes all the difference. Hong Kong has notoriously humid and sweltering summers!

Kimber, enjoy your time in Edmonton! Have you ever been to the Calgary Stampede? I loved it when I lived there in the early 80s. I've never been to Okanagan, but have heard it has great scenery.
