Hi Anne, Sorry to hear that. We lost the family cat last week to cancer so I understand how you feel. Thankfully my dogs are still just a couple kids but the thought of losing them someday, while a reality, is heartbreaking nonetheless. At least Krewe went peacefully, in her sleep, close to the person she loved. All the best to you.

Actually, I've joined in a discussion topic on the book for dissenters.

People who say "it's only a pet", should be burned at the stake, IMHO.

Have you got a link to it? Sounds like something I would join.

I have read The Light Between Oceans and it was good but I didn't love it, gave it 4 stars. The Casual Vacancy is one I do plan to read and am going to go in with an open mind. I hear such diverse opinions and reviews on it but I have a feeling I might be in the group that enjoys it, at least I hope so. :)

Doing that, I notice two of my friends have one-starred it. Which is more downright than my two stars.

Always wanted to be a lighthouse-keeper, and Bobby's wife's ignoring him, and it's by an Aussie Oi Oi OiPS. got to love how extremely mixed the reviews are. Opinion's a beautiful thing.
PPS. It might have too much about babies. I'm baby-allergic.

Thanks, Terri. While I'm mostly a dogs and horses kind of person, this cat was a super cool dude and really friendly to everyone -- I often thought he was a dog in disguise.* He'll be missed. As sad as it is when anyone loses a loved one, person or pet, it is a reminder of how precious life is and hopefully prompts us to do our best to savor the moments and value the times we spend with one another.
*Note: Nothing against cats in general -- and not that they need my disclaimer anyway, superior beings that they are. ;)
I know the kind of cat you mean. Although I too am a dog person, I had a cat myself over ten years gone that was more dog than cat. When I lived in the city he, 'Ki', used to walk with me and sit on the floor next to me at the corner store as I bought my stuff. And then we walked home. He wasn't on a lead. He just ambled along next to me all chilled out.So, yes, I know the kind of cat you mean. :-)
Sorry David, I must have missed your post where you said you lost your cat. Sad to hear. I am a dog person too and when we lost our cats it was sad but not as devastating as when I lost my dog. My cat used to follow us on walks and we used to play fetch with her. She was cool but very tempermental.
Sorry David...had to put our cat "Bones" down last year and even though we have 4 dogs we had Bones for 11 years and she was just a daily part of our lives.

Thanks, Tasha. Bobby as well. Terri, also. I think I remember you also lost a pet a while back but I was kind of new in the group and didn't know what was appropriate at the time. Anyway, if I am remembering correctly, sorry for your loss as well, belated. Tasha, no worries, I hadn't mentioned the family cat previously. I just wanted to let Anne know I could relate to how she felt. When we lose someone it can be feel like kind of a lonely thing, but we don't have to be alone with it, as we truly can relate to one another. Anyway, to Anne, I hope you have some brighter days and find yourself smiling at the good memories. :)It seems we've got a lot of pet people here -- maybe it goes hand in hand with being readers. It would be interesting to see the stats on that. I see Bobby's got four!
I've currently got two dogs, 16 month old white English Labrador Retrievers, brother and sister. Their names are Penny(f) and Chase(m) and they're a couple of crazy kids, although starting to mellow a little, thankfully. :) Someday, I'd like to get them a country property and some horses for them to 'play' with (ie. try not to get stepped on by), but that's a long way off, so for now the dog park and walks around the neighborhood will have to suffice. :)
What about the rest of the gang? Dogs? Cats? Rats? Snakes? Tarantulas? Iguanas? Designer pigs? Anyone? Bueller? :)
2 dogs: German Shepard (9yo, retired security explosives detection dog from Iraq) and the second is a true mutt: coonhound, chow chow, and Australian shepherd adopted from the south (US).We also have hermit crabs, frogs, mice (who literally stink and we'll never get again!), a fish and a bearded dragon.

Knowing someone else is hurting too can ease my own hurt a bit.
We have lost two cats and two dogs. No more pets. It took a long time to get over losing those animals.
David,The latter dragon looks like more fun than the former. If he isn't a grumpy old dragon that is.
Being summer here, and bearded dragons being native to Australia, the lizards are on the move. I only saw a large Bearded Dragon wandering across my yard two days ago.
I had three dogs until recently. Now have two. Two desexed boy dogs - a Jack Russell and a Kelpie cross, three girl cockateils, 7 chickens, and many many cows.
My dragon is brumating (hibernating) right now so we may not see her for several weeks, which gives me a break from feeding and cleaning up after her. :)
I saw another one this morning. Under a Gum tree acting like a piece of bark. She was a pretty one. Grey, of course, but still pretty. :-)
The Kookaburra song is a hit with kids around the world. I grew up with it. Although, I might have learned it from some Aussies -- same way I learned about the subtle and poetic lyrical stylings of Kevin Bloody Wilson. Lol ;)
I've always found 'The Log Driver's Waltz' particularly amusing. A classic, to be sure. ;)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upsZZ2...

Every once in a while one comes back to me and i usually remember the words too.
It's a fun song. I googled it to find out how old it is (written by Marion Sinclair in 1932) and discovered that Australian school children apparently came up with an alternate version at some point."Kookaburra sits on electric wire, jumping up and down with his pants on fire. Laugh, Kookaburra, laugh, Kookaburra. Hot your pants must be." --Characters!!! :)

Ah I see, watched a clip on utube. It's a Aussie version of our chubby brown.
I haven't bryn no one can judge a nation on one person.
Lol! A childhood friend of mine's dad was Australian and he had some cassette tapes to which we sneaked a listen when the parents were out. We thought it was hilarious at the time -- of course his humor would most certainly appeal to rebellious teenagers.
