He dropped off my list 4 days ago and his account had no books left on it and only about a dozen friends left, but I don't see his profile anywhere anymore so I think he's deleted it too.
There is an e-mail addy for anyone who wanted to get in touch, Derek did leave it on his profile pg last time so am sure he wont mind me passing it onto friends, feel free to drop me a PM if you'd like it.
Simona wrote: "He did. I'm really worried for his state of mind."Yeah, it seemed like this place was really keeping him in good spirits! Hopefully his sister will get in touch with us if something happens.
I have received an email from Derek, after letting him know about everyone's concerns. He said it was ok for me to pass this on.Foremost he says he loves A & M, and everyone here. But he just isn't himself at the moment, and feels he shouldn't be on a social site like this in his current state of mind. In his mind he wants people to remember him when his mind was right not the way he is now. And he asks you not to worry about him.
That last part is easier said than done as Derek has touched the lives of too many people who now care a great deal for him. I don't really know what else to say. I've just sat here for five minutes staring at the screen. But certainly drop him a line as Andy suggested. Even if can't respond, I'm sure he would like to hear from people. :((

I suspect my new laptop (new as in bought some time last year) is the problem. My previous laptop didn't have a problem with wifi. then we bought the new laptop and it wasn't as good but still okay. the new laptop came with Win8.
THEN, the Win8.1 upgrade came through and ever since then the laptops wifi has been completely cactus.
It wouldn't work at all directly after the upgrade. So we rang Acer and they sent us a link that was supposed to patch the issue. It got the wifi working, but it has never worked very well.
I wish I had the knowledge to fix it. I hate the thought of having to pay to send my laptop away to get fixed under warranty and then them sending it back saying "couldn't find a problem".
All our phones and tablets work great. The tablets still work on the wifi from 80 meters away. But the damn laptop struggles beyond 5 metres. :\

Thnx for the update!
Terri wrote: "THEN, the Win8.1 upgrade came through and ever since then the laptops wifi has been completely cactus."Never heard that expression before, but it's appropriate to computer problems. I fell in a patch of cactus one time. 10 years later, I still had bits working out of my thigh occasionally. Some computer problems, like driver issues, are about as much fun.
I'll suggest 2 things. If you don't have any bluetooth devices on your laptop, disable it completely. You'll need to go into services & do it there, too. Reboot & see if it's any better.
The other thing to try is turn the internal wi-fi off & use a wi-fi dongle. I like the Buffalo AC433. It installs & uninstalls easily, doesn't seem to be a bully. Uses a tiny little dongle that can usually be left in the USB port even when putting the laptop in a bag. Of course, it eats a precious USB port, but if your signal is better, that's probably worth it.
Derek is gone from my list of friends. We were talking about his early birthday present. He was so excited! His message saying, 'It's me, Derek....' was priceless. Then he wrote a thank you email where he listed all of his friends, which broke my heart! I thought the email might be a farewell, but for those in contact------please tell him there is not one day that passes that I don't think about him.

Ew. I cringe to think of falling in a patch of cactus.
I have had some small hairlike prickles from cactus in my hand (from using a sock to rub the prickles of the cactus fruit so I could eat them..the sock wasn't doing a very good job) and it was awfully uncomfortable.
I can't even imagine the pain associated with the larger cactus spikes. :[
I like your ideas. I usually have Bluetooth turned off on my devices, but I'll double check because I had to bluetooth some videos from my Tablet to my laptop the other day.
I am going to look into the dongle idea. As you say, losing the precious usb is an issue. As I have a mouse plugged into one and the other two get used off and on for everything from external disc drive, external hard drive and printer. Along with other odds and sods from time to time.
Having a permanent wifi dongle plugged in may cramp my style. I'll still look into it though.
I thought about buying one of those wifi boosters. But again. I hate the idea of too much wifi blasting around the house. I don't think there is any genuine danger of cancer, but it still gives me the heebie jeebies. :)

Andy has it I think if you want to send Andy a pm.
Deepest condolences from me and my family Molly to yours.we are a darker place but the sky has a bright new star now.
rip derek my friend.
Horrible, horrible news. I'm glad it was relatively easy for him. Thank you for letting us know Molly, I know that most people here including myself have been thinking about Derek a lot lately.
Molly, thank you so much for sharing that news. My heart goes to you and your family. Derek has been the dearest of friends and I won't ever forget him. I will miss him greatly, I will miss our daily chats. I have no words to describe how I feel. Thank you again. Xo
Sad news to hear, my condolences to you Molly & all of Derek's family. Not sure what to say, feel a little numb tbh, except thank you for letting us know at this difficult time. He was a grand man your brother.
Molly, My sincerest condolences to you and your family on the loss of Derek. I was honored to know him on here. Eternal memory.
Molly, thank you for taking the time to let us know. He will be greatly missed in many of our lives. He had a profound affect on mine. I'm happy to hear his last moments weren't painful and hope he is at peace with everything. Okay, gotta go.
My condolences to you, Molly, and your family. I thought we would have a little more time with Derek, but I thank God that his passing was easy. He was a dear person and a good friend. The Derek I knew would want a party rather than a funeral, and his final thoughts would be for others rather than for himself. Goodbye, my friend.
Robin wrote: "Hey everybody, thought I'd introduce my self. I know this isn't the thread for it..."You are correct, this is not the thread for it. So I have moved your post to the Meet & Greet thread.
Oh no...RIP Derek. You will be missed. I'm so sad to hear this but so grateful that his passing was relatively painless for him. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Molly,Thank you very much for letting us know. He will be missed!
You have my sincere condolences to your and your family
RIP Derek
Hi Molly sorry to hear of the loss of you brother, my God give you peace and joy in this time in remembering the life of Derek. God bless you and your family.
Molly wrote: "Hi. This is Derek's sister Molly. I hate to interrupt here, but Derek has deleted his account, and this is where I was directed to via his journal(don't call it a diary. );*. We lost Derek tonight...."Molly,thank you for sharing with us, expecially in the most terrible time of your mourning. We'll miss your brother, he was a wonderful person.
He'll be always in my heart. My deepest sympathy.
Molly, Derek will be deeply missed. When I gaze at the stars tonight, I will raise my glass in memory to him.
He was an exceptional human being and will be greatly missed.
As hard as it is to let go of a friend I will do so as he requested and tip a glass for him tonight, Molly. A very sincere, interesting guy was your brother and his participation and input and friendship will be missed tremendously here. The journey is over...peace has come.
Wherever you are now, my old mate, my thoughts will always be with you.Friends forever, D.
Thankyou Molly for coming to let us know this terrible news. I know all his friends here are eternally grateful to you for taking some time during this sad moment to share this. And to give us the comfort of your words.
Please feel welcome to join us here whenever you please. Doesn't matter if you do not read the books we read. We are all here to chat to if you ever need it yourself.
Kindest regards,
Terri
Molly it was a pleasure that I could do that for Derek, wish I could have done more for him.just wanted to make sure he could enjoy the book.
Molly wrote: "Terri:) I hope you realize the impact you had on Derek's life. He holds you responsible for his addiction to Goodreads, and what a great addiction it was for him...."That is such a special thing to say to me. Thank you. I have tried from the start to make this a place where all people from all walks of life may come and find succour. Whether that is through books or through meeting others.
I will always be happy to know that Derek found succour here and it made his life a happier place.
On a lighter note. Lets give ourselves something to distract our minds for the moment. The GR site announcement about the 'It' book. I haven't even heard of any of those books. I am so out of touch.
https://www.goodreads.com/blog/show/4...
I read that and thought the same thing. I've heard of the first two, Gone Girl & The Goldfinch but none of the rest.
Oh Gads. We Were Liars? Been there. Done that. Not great. Yes it has a 'sixth sense' type twist at the end (one of those where no one will hint at what happens because they don't want to ruin it) but it's not exactly rocket science to figure it out. Unreliable narrator is not my favorite read anyway and this one I could have done without.
I am surprised The Goldfinch is on there. I have it in my tbr list because my library book club wants to read it (we haven't decided yet) but the reviews seems to be pretty split about it. I am surprised Frog Music isn't on that list. That was a pretty big book this year or at least it was according to the critics.
And at the risk or making an offensive blanket statement, those all seem like "women's books". I didn't feel there was a lot of variety.
Correction, Gretchen, they seem like books that PUBLISHERS think are "women's books".Most women I know wouldn't go within a hundred yards of those books.
They're too busy reading Bernard Cornwell, a variety of creepy urban fantasy/horror books, and crime fiction.

Good Grief - I haven't heard of any of them, let alone read any.
Lia wrote: "OMG, Margaret! Feels like you are pointing at me. I almost see your finger touching my nose. :O"LMAO Lia. And at myself, well, with the exception of the Bernard Cornwell books. :D

Gretchen wrote: "And at the risk or making an offensive blanket statement, those all seem like "women's books". I didn't feel there was a lot of variety."My thoughts exactly. or 'chicks books' as I call them. :D
I understand where Margaret is coming from with 'what publishers think are women's books. I agree with that too. But I have to confess that I think they are chick books and the publisher is right.
Maybe it would be right to say they are for the women who don't identify with any genres and who follow the mainstream? they just read what their girlfriends are reading or whatever is marketed at them?
