I planted the last of my bulbs last night. Almost 500 tulips, daffodils, iris, mountain belles, lilies, & Grecian windflowers planted along the roads on the steep banks & hedgerows of my property. They went in fairly easily, although rocks & tree roots aren't fun with the 2" bulb auger. We had some rain the night before, not bad for us although some grape sized hail came down at one point. There were 5 tornadoes in the rest of the state, but we rarely get them up here. We're 450' above Frankfort, just south of us.
Marg & I rode around the farm last night, too. We were going to trailer the horses somewhere for a trail ride, but the truck had to go into the shop yesterday for electrical issues. Might be the alternator going bad, but it's iffy.

It turns 30deg over there and everyone's looking for a fountain! 30 deg over here and you're saying, " no I'm not getting in the water it's too bloody cold".

Had to do some research for work today, turns out there are a barrel load of fleet dispatching and mapping software design companies in Australia.

I have this vivid memory from all those years ago when we used to be in another group together, of you having to cart water to your horses because the troughs would ice up. That is a cold I just can't comprehend. We get cold here and heavy frosts, but it never gets that cold.
It gets that cold elsewhere in my country though.
RE: holidays
We actually didn't go anywhere really. With the farm and all the jobs we needed to catch up on here with hubby home we can't escape. Gosh, I haven't had a night away from the farm for maybe 5 years. My hubby gets away all the time because of his work, but I'm stuck here.
We did get to go away sometimes for a half day or full day while he was on hols from work. We went for drives and did things away from the farm.
You need to show me a photo of your bulbs when in full bloom. that would be quite something! I plan on getting some bulbs in next season.

NO travel this week....took it off and going to our neighborhood block margarita party......for the first time! Always gone for the past 20 years of the party. Wonder if any of the neighbors will know who I am, or will they think my wee wife just went out and found some stranger to accompany her!!
I wish my neighborhood would have a margarita party but with neighbors who aren't my neighbors.
My neighbourhood mostly has all the community spirit of a collection of cactus.

We did take a few days to go up to MD to see our new grandson, but arranged to have my daughter, Erin, & her husband stay here. Marg was on the phone with her twice a day even though 2 of the horses are Erin's. Sheesh. We're down to just 4 horses, 2 goats, & 4 dogs now. Erin is planning to take one of hers soon, too. It's nice downsizing.
The cold has been a lot worse the past couple of years. We're getting some arctic thing that typically hits Siberia, but seems to have gotten lost & found its way into our neck of the woods. It makes for nice, cool summers, though.
I love taking day trips. There are a lot of places within an hour or two that are worth seeing. We went on a trail ride at a local Shaker Village.

It's pretty nice. They have bought back most of the land, so 1.5 hours riding covers a quarter of it. Very pretty. I got a bareback pad to ride in, too. On the back of my fat App, Chip, it's like riding in a luxury car, if a car was scared of downed trees.

I'll try to remember to post some pics of the bank gardens next year. I have a couple of others that I've been working on for the past 7 years. They're chaotic masses of weedy flowers that choke out the ugly weeds. The birds & bunnies really like them, too.
What kind of bulbs are you getting? I've been really impressed with the quality from Breck's. They have very reasonable prices (better than Jackson & Perkins) on their older varieties. I'm not sure if they sell down your way or not. From what I've heard, Australian customs are pretty tight on imported plants & animals. Good for them. We're really suffering from our lax standards. The Emerald Ash Borer has killed every mature ash tree around. You'd think after the Chestnut blight, we'd have learned, but the Dutch Elm disease shortly after proved that wrong & don't get me started on multiflora rose, Japanese honeysuckle, & garlic mustard. Oy!

I don't really need a reply, Terri. Just babbling.No power this morning. It went out last night at about 12:30. It's still out this morning. Got the generator & Coleman stove hooked up. TV, PC, & a few lights working - the essentials. Looks like a big area north & south, on the west side of Frankfort. Over 3000 people without power. Considering much of this area is uninhabitable, that's a lot.
So it was a bit of a fire drill getting Marg out of here this morning. She wanted to leave by 6:30 with Indy & Speedy for a horse show. Speedy is over 30, so just along as a babysitter for Indy, who is only 5. Looks like we made the time, although no grooming done here. They do have electric at the show.

@Bobby, Sorry about TCU. Miss Mona would have had good consolation business last night had they not shut her down years ago! Mississippi's dueling Universities did OK. I just wasted three hours watching the Vikings loose and I could have spent that time reading. I'd love to say lesson learned but I'm still going to plant my butt on the couch and watch them next week. It just might be time to focus on the undefeated Minnesota Wild! In the meantime, I'm going to go rake ridiculous piles of leaves so my girls can ruin them.
This is the time of year that I really love taking my walks. The leaves are falling and most people have not cleaned up there sidewalks. Walking through them takes me back to my inner five yr old!Otisthedog puts up with my scuffling thru them and just gives me a "Just what are you doing?" look :)

White Mini schnauzer - he's between 8 and 9 ( we got him from the local pound 6 yrs ago this Thanksgiving. They said he'd only been there 1 night when Mrs Happy went up looking for a replacement for our previous pup and when I came home from work there he was. Appearently an AF family had transfered to Korea and couldn't take him with them.)He is the best walking partner I've ever had. Most of the time I'm not sure who is walking whom :) Our previous dogs' idea of a long walk was down to the corner and back :)
Haha, oh they have lots of spunk!!! Big dog in a little body, hehe. They are the best companions. I'm sure it's him taking you for a walk, :)
He's great fun - a lot like a three yr old. He knows the rules, but is always checking to see if they are still in effect :)Mrs Happy says he can't get lost anywhere Layton/Kaysville, because of our walks he knows almost all of the streets with in 5 miles (8 KM) of our house!

There was a JAG marathon going on tv while the Cowboys beat the Seahawks and Packers beat the Dolphins. I flipped back and forth all afternoon because I wanted to see it all! Midway through the last Jag episode, a local church took over the Jag channel which led me to powerful frustration and an eating binge. When I came to, I was chomping on the remote control thinking it was a Snickers Bar.The Vikings don't have a QB or Adrian Peterson. From what I heard, correct me if I am wrong, the first-third, maybe more, QBs are hurt. These things are supposed to happen to some other team--not the Vikings.
Weather Report: we have had summer-like highs and lows passed the time the nights should be cooling off. Hot days are common, but 70 at night is uncommon. Footballers playing in the South have heat to contend with as well as the opposing team. Tornadoes and tornadic weather systems happening today. When the tomato alert goes off, we and all the neighbors go outside to 'see' what's going on before we take shelter.
Teddy Bridgewater is a rookie so mistakes are to be expected. I think given time he will do just fine. After watching Christian Ponder do nothing but throw short balls and complete passes to the wrong colored jerserys, I am ready to see what Teddy can do. As far as Adrian Peterson goes, Vikings' fans need to prepare for life without him. If he gets thrown in jail for "smoking a little weed", he won't ever wear purple and gold again. It's funny the Wilf family would take such hard actions on criminal when not too long ago the Wilfs were convicted of more or less being modern day mobsters.

Bulbs. Not sure what I want to plant next season. Being middle Spring now it is too late. Not many bulbs in stores to buy.
I know I want Snowflakes as that is a sentimental family favourite.
We have a large variety of bulbs in Australia. As many as you would have in the US I imagine. As well as some Australian plant breeders creating their own, we do get some plants from overseas.
I'm not sure how they get them in. As you say, we have strict import laws here. It must take years of raising them in quarantine before they are released for commercial production.
What sort of bulbs did you plant?

We tend to stick to daffodils, tulips and glads

And Grecian Windflowers we get here too. Not common though and it appears from my searches that we call them by their scientific Anemone name.
