Ouch!!
On a side note, its really cool that a skeleton of a king can be found under a parking lot. Nothing that cool ever happens in America.
I am reading City of Silenceby Kim Wright. It is about Nicholas, the last Russian tsar, and his wife and children who all murdered in the early 1900s. Does anyone recall a book title written before 1980 about the murders of Nicholas and family? I read it, but do not remember the author or title. Thank you.LL
Totally off the subject of History but the above conversation made me think of this. Does anyone know of any thread or site where people can go looking for unknown books? Like Linda above I don't know the title or author. I only know it was a book of fairy tales I owned in the late 70's and early 80's. I remember some of the tales and the illustration on the front and back panels. I've searched for it on and off for about ten years. Grasping at straws now basically.....Any ideas?

You're very welcome Kimber. Glad I could help. :)
I wandered off the reservation to read Victor's excellent review and to buy the 99¢ book. Thank you, Jane, for the Massie tip, and thank you, Derek, for the site.
Some may have noticed my absence these last 4 days or so?? Really sorry for not logging onto GR sooner to explain things. My husband has gone on two weeks holidays from work.
First ones for 18 months and we are catching up on a million jobs at home as well as going places and doing things together away form home. There's so much stuff we never get to do while he is at work and so we are trying to cram as much of it into his two weeks off as possible.
I will continue to have a patchy presence for the next couple weeks, but I will drop in when I can.
I miss you all and I just wanted all our members to know that I haven't abandoned them. I'll be back in regular contact as soon as hubby goes back to work.
So don't go forgetting me. Its only two weeks! :)
Tootles for now,
Terri

Derek - I joined the group and it's wonderful...except for the fact that when I log on Goodreads I now have 40 notifications instead of the usual 8 to 12. *sigh* You have to be a group member to find the book you can't remember so I'll stick with it a bit.
I think you can turn off the general notifications in your profile and then on the post for your book set replies to it as notification or email. That's what I do with most of my groups.
Did anyone watch Saints vs. Vikings pro football game yesterday? If Drew Bees had not been sacked and attacked, the game would not have been so much fun. He came up out of that three man pile spitting man, ready to fight, but the ref caught him in the nick of time. The Vikings got the penalty and The Saints went marching in for the win. Who DAT?
I am a Vikings fan and I roared when Drew Brees got planted into the ground. I may or may not still be a little bitter about that hit put on Brett Farve a few years back. I've completely given up on the Vikings for the season. Our qb broke his foot. We've got off-field distractions like nobody's business. The off-field issues this year make the "love boat" incident look like a ticket for jaywalking.

Just a quick note...I try and keep up with the chatter but not a lot of time to input as I'm on the road most days. Have been in Utah twice, California, Texas etc. North Carolina this week, back to Utah and then....and then....OFF the week end of the 11th of October. Everyone stay safe out there in the crazy world we live in.https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.ne...This a pic of me at the top of the "Y" mountain in Provo, Utah. 1 1/2 mile vertical at 6000 ft!! I do this in my down time!!
BobbyYou going to be doing any more "Y" games this yr?
Darcy - the Y is only about 1/2 of the way up that mountain :)
Terri - enjoy your time away from us :)
Very cool Bobby.Although you and Happy with your bazillion mile walks a day to tops of mountains and back put me to shame... our mailboxes are at the front of our complex and every day I'm like "ugh! I'll just get my mail tomorrow, I dont feel like walking that far!"

Darcy, that is true but I was exhausted at the "Y". Went just a bit farther but even coming down is so steep found it taxing my knees and hamstrings.
Happy,I have another game, ergo will climb the "Y" again, Oct. 3rd. But then I go straight out to Sundance (Robert Redford's resort)and "rehydrate" at the Owl!!!! Feel I earn it after that hike. I live at sea level so hiking there and running out at Bridal Veil really tests me.
I was just at the Grand Canyon and I noticed the elevation a lot there too. I live about 100' above sea level and the whole 8000-10000 above was hard on the lungs!
@Bobby, good picture of you in a beautiful place. Be safe.@Allie, I know that feeling when moving my body anywhere is just too much today. Do it tomorrow? Not likely.
@Gretchen, Ouch! Will Petersen ever play again? Just watching him on the field could make my day. Despite their troubles, the Vikings look formidable to me.

Linda- I think it depends on a few things. The most important thing is whether or not he's found guilty. If he's found guilty, I don't think it will be a Michael Vick situation where he will come back after serving his time. One other thing that will determine whether he plays again or not is Ray Rice. The outcome of that debacle (for all the Vikings' issues, I'm glad I'm not a Ravens fan) will have far reaching implications. If the players' union is able to get Ray Rice reinstated, I think Peterson has a chance to play again. I do not think Peterson will ever wear a Vikings' jersey again mainly because our governor has taken such a harsh stance against him. Of course if the governor looses his re-election bid, who knows? Peterson was the driving force behind the governor's ability to get Minnesota to pay for a new Vikings' stadium. On a totally unrelated rant, why are the taxpayers responsible for supplying a multi-million dollar (sometimes billion) organization (non-for profit) with a facility? More owners need to take the Jerry Jones route.

Yes, he's good about helping the taxpayers out with the financials of the new stadium (and that's helping..not completely paying for) BUT you do NOT want a team run Jerry Jones style for anything in the world. Jerry calls all the shots. Experienced coaches don't want to work with him because he makes all the decisions - draft choices, salaries, starting players - and new coaches with talent realize how restrictive he is and leave. We haven't been a championship team since the early 90's when Jimmy Johnson was strong enough to take charge of the team himself. When Jerry pushed back, Jimmy left and the Cowboys have been a joke ever since.
I meant the from the financial side of things. I think Jerry Jones would drive me bonkers from a fan perspective. Not that the Wilf family is really a whole lot better. They were recently convicted of crimes that essentially make them modern day mob bosses.

Be careful at Bridal Veils - it seems like a couple of kids die there trying to climb it every couple of yrs - normally in the winter when it is frozen

I loved that book (many Kleenex were sacrificed while reading)
One of the many reasons I'm sometimes ashamed to say I live in Texas - We lead the country in book banning/challenges. Mr. Stein's book (above) is one of seven being challenged by a North Texas school district right now. Ironically the parents decided to challenge the school curriculum during National Book Banning Awareness Week. Ain't 'Merica grand?

Here's a good article about why they banned 7 books: http://www.dailydot.com/geek/banned-b...Steins was flagged for a scene in which a teenager incites non-consensual sex with an adult.

Good link, Dawn. I want to scream at these book banning parents!
I particularly liked this comment made by someone in response to the matter.
"Can they really think not exposing children to things like this adequately prepares them for the life they have ahead of them?
Hide them in a cave, and they will only be prepared for life inside of that cave.
Expose them to the world explaining to them the rights and wrongs of what they see along the way, prepares them for making the right decisions when they step out into the world on their own." Yes!

I just can't believe this. My kids have always been free to choose any book in our home library, provided that they would ask for any detail or situation that could make them feel not at ease.
In my experience, this contributes to shape well balanced human beings, without prejudices, racism or morbid curiosities.
Please remember that during the 3rd Reich they used to burn books, also. NOT a good exemple, IMO.
