Although we won't khnow the final count for a while. I think most of my state has a mail-in ballot. Those couldn't have possibly been counted.

Either candidate would have terrified me so it is a lose-lose situation here. However, I'm just going about my life as usual and know that all is well. :D

Terri | 19576 comments Are they saying whether postal votes could change the decision at all? Or is it dead cert that Obama has won?

I'll admit, Romney terrified me too and I don't even live in America.

:(

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments Never fear, Terri, I take it he WON. More outrightly than expected? or quicker at least.
Ditto.

Terri | 19576 comments I don't know if these facts are right, but I just heard something about, 'more women voted this election than have ever voted' or maybe it was 'more women have voted this election than have voted in the last few elections' and that they voted for Obama. And that it is because of pro life comments Romney made about abortion.

(Not that I will touch THAT hot button issue of abortion. Please, nobody go there.
I am just repeating some stats I heard on the radio)

"Dead" being the operative word...it is certain.

Dawn (caveatlector) In honor of Remembrance Day..... http://www.spiegel.de/fotostrecke/pho...

Maybe not the nicest photos but fascinating.

Terri | 19576 comments Our Remembrance day is on a few days. The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, we do our minutes silence. Always a sad day that one.

message 915: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Yep, it's the same here. I'm just preparing a few days early, lots of stuff showing up on Facebook and some was just so share worthy. :)

From what I've seen, voter turnout has been way up all around, for all candidates. I think a lot of that has been because of the boom in social networking. It's increasing awareness, which is a good thing.

I won't go into the "issues" themselves, but I will say that as per all elections, the things you hear about in campaign ads aren't always accurate. Or they're skewed. They have professionals that write those ads to be intentionally misleading.

But that part isn't a new phenomenon. I think it's great that more people are turning out to make a difference. It's also why the popular vote was so close this time around.

Kat Hodgins | 40 comments Dawn, thank you for sharing the photo link. In Canada, the week leading up to Remembrance Day is designated as Veteran's Week; part of why you are seeing posts and TV spots.

message 919: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Hi Chris,
That's good news that voting was up all round. It is a special privilege to be a part of a democracy where individuals can vote with freedom....as opposed to voting with guns at your back or on your family.
I hope that figures get bigger and bigger each election in the US. :-)

Bobby (bobbej) | 1375 comments Here its called Veteran's Day...someone once gave me a pin on that day and I still have it!!

message 923: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Apparently Remembrance Day is a Commonwealth Country name.
There are several other names too.....Poppy Day, Armistice Day, Memorial Day, Anzac Day.

Nope, not Anzac Day. ANZAC Day is the beginning of the year. April 25. :)

message 925: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I didn't read everything I see, I just did a quick look at Wiki. So this is what I have read now:
Memorial Day is in May in the States, Armistice Day is in France, Poppy Day seems to be in New Zealand prior to ANZAC Day.

It says in Wiki that ANZAC Day has eclipsed Remembrance Day in Australia, is that true?

message 926: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments No, not where I live. No, I wouldn't think that was true at all across the country when I think of it.
People buy their Poppies and wear their Poppies, go to services for the fallen.

The person probably only says that because there is a public holiday for ANZAC Day, but not for Remembrance day.

message 927: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Well, that sounds like what we do here. Though this is a public holiday for us.
You just have another day to remember on too.

message 928: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I personally, remember every day. :) Hard not to with the non fiction books I read and all the military men in my family. :)

message 929: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I remember every day too. I am grateful for those men and women (and dogs!) and I try to keep them in my thoughts everyday.

Kat Hodgins | 40 comments Terri wrote: "I personally, remember every day. :) Hard not to with the non fiction books I read and all the military men in my family. :)"
I am with you, Terri. I am an ex MilSpouse, and have many friends still "in". They are all still in my heart every day. I also volunteer with a support group for families of soldiers with OSIs. Not all wounds show on the outside.
And yes Tasha, veterans come all ages, genders, shapes, and species.

message 931: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Good on you, Kat. Volunteering is in anyway to support others is a noble thing.

You see the German Shepherd in Tasha's avatar? Tasha and her family rehomed this dog, (adopted him). He is an Iraq vet himself. Although an explosives dog for Reed over there, he is still a 'vet'. :)

Tasha that's amazing. I am sure he is enjoying his retirement with your family! BZ

message 933: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Thanks, Kate. We are glad to have him in our lives. He is a sweetie and I just love him. We brought him home last November. He's an old guy at 9yo with some health issues (originating over there) but as far as I can tell, he is enjoying the quiet life now. :)

message 934: by Tasha (new)

Thanks, Leslie. He has a gorgeous face. I committed to adopting him before I even saw him. His handsomeness was an added bonus. :D

Had a great time. :) Even tried indoor rock climbing. :)

And came home to good news - mom has settled into the new hostel and is rapidly making friends. :)

Terri | 19576 comments Which area of Auckland, Margaret?

It is a beautiful city. Much underrated because tourists tend to want to go to the South Island for the extreme sports and Snow. But Auckland and the North Island is a lovely place with much beauty.

What about Queens Wharf? Did you go there? :) (too many questions?)

Did the more esoteric shops on K-road this time. :D

Went to Queen's Wharf on my previous visit. :D
