Depends on what the reason was for the event in the spoiler. My boss was taken away in the middle of the work day and since I was the only manager there I had to take his conference call, tell the big boss where he was and let the other General Managers know what had happened. As a result I was promoted to Assistant GM when he came back (his was just traffic warrants), was given more responsibility and a raise. I guess because they knew they could count on me in a crisis.

Thanks for that Wikipedia link, Scott. That jogged some of my memory.
I see many parallels between the incidents.
I, personally, think the one in 1988 was worse due to the plane not even being outside Iranian airspace when it was shot down. Whereas the MH17 was in a war zone when it was shot down.
But as far as similarities go, I found it quite shocking to read that the then US Government refused to apologise for the incident. Same is going on now with the Russians and the Seperatists. I wonder how many years it will be before they officially apologise.

Terri | 19576 comments Been meaning to say...
You know, I think that the US state of Tennessee looks like paradise. Whenever I see it on tv it always looks green and lush with beautiful countryside and lovely looking cities and towns.

I have been watching a show called Private Lives of Nashville Wives. The show annoys the crap out of me, but when I stumbled upon the first episode I was drawn by the lovely countryside.
I also watch the tv series called Nashville.

If I ever had to move to the US, I think I would move to Tennessee. Like Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban did. I would by a farm there. :D

Tennessee is also the home of the Religious Viewpoints Anti-discrimination Act meaning that you can bully people if its "religious speech" (and this applies to schools as well) and at school write "God did it" on your homework and not be marked down from it. Its like the rest of the south, pretty but filled to the brim with religious evangelicals who protest against teaching Evolution in their schools.

heavy. been a long time since I was in school so I don't think I'd have to worry about that. lol.

There is not a country in the world or a State in a country that does not have its cultural, philosophical or legislative flaws.
Nobody is perfect and no place gets it all right, all of the time. It is up to us to make the best of where we land and if we can't, then if it is a free country and free state, you can get up and leave.

Alicja (darkwingduckie7) | 657 comments Sorry, we go camping to the Appalachian mountains since its the closest thing we have to mountains within a day's driving range and we've had some bad experiences up there and have learned to be very, very careful.

It is a beautiful place. The mountains are beautiful (way more than the flat swamps we occupy). But some people up there can be dangerous in a way that we've never had to worry about down here.

I think there are definitely lots of similarities between the two incidents. I think it's terrible that the US didn't apologise and only went as far as expressing "regret", and it does sadden me a little that money seemed such a big factor in the resolution of it.
I'm glad that there finally seems to be some progress with the MH17 crash now though, mainly that the bodies are on the way back to the families and that the flight recorders are being transported for analysis. With the government pushing for more EU sanctions against Russia as well, the news is currently filled with reports either about it all.

In more cheerful news, the Commonwealth Games start today! (well, the Opening Ceremony)

Did you see the leader of the separatists being interviewed? The lies are astonishing. lol. You just think 'how can these people not hear themselves'. but I guess they gets so insulated in their own little political microcosm that they have no concept of the ridiculousness of their lies.

Then there's Russia. Coming out and saying they tracked a Ukrainian military plane that could have shot MH17 down...apart from the obvious evidence to say that idea is whack, I think that is a confession by Russia that they had monitored a Ukrainian Airforce plane and given information to pro Russian separatists that it was going to move into their area. So the Seperatists were expecting a military plane and shot it down..only to discover it was MH17.

We (Australia) do a lot of trade with Russia, so it will be interesting to see how that pans out. As a beef farmer myself, we sell cattle into a market here that ends up as boxed product going to Russia. If we cut some of those trade ties it will directly impact on my back pocket...but I'll get over it. Happy to take the hit in this case.

Commonwealth Games. So excited!!! Not so excited because we have to get through the opening ceremony first..and i always find opening ceremonies boring. :]

I don't think I've seen that interview yet, though from past interviews I know exactly what you mean. The whole system in those rebel regions is staggering though, such as the way the referenda were carried out a few months ago.

It sucks that you would have to take a hit financially if the trade links are cut, but I have so much admiration for your attitude towards it. From what I gather, the problem here is imports and how reliant Germany and other EU states are on Russian gas, but they seem to be moving towards more economic sanctions. It's such a slow moving process though, and ultimately I just pray that the conflict and bloodshed ends as quickly as possible.

Yeah, for me it was pretty much the same with London 2012, although the Opening Ceremony there was good. Generally, I am not a fan of the opening and closing ceremonies either, but I'm definitely looking forward to the actual Games! Come on England! :P

http://newday.blogs.cnn.com/2014/07/2...

The only thing I worry about with sanctions, is the effect on the people. Like what happened in Iraq and Nth Korea. Cut the government off, is really only cutting the people off. But it is the only peaceful way to punish another country that won't play ball.

Oh wow. Some of that is pretty crazy stuff, especially the idea that the OSCE would recommend leaving these bodies in the outdoors for four days. I see exactly what you meant now.

Sanctions definitely aren't a perfect solution- I believe the embargoes on Iran have also been felt particularly strongly by civilians there. It's such a shame that the ordinary people suffer most when the politicians set their countries on these pretty damaging courses, but that's the way it seems to be. It always reminds me of Varys' quote in Game of Thrones, "Why is it always the innocents who suffer most, when you high lords play your Game of Thrones?" It really is true though. (Also, I really am that much of a GoT nerd :P)

And in the games- the swimming is awesome, but given the fact that our medals tend to come from the velodrome, I have to confess that I prefer watching the cycling. :P I was reading an article the other day about Chad le Clos and his father's reaction when he won gold in the Olympics two years ago. That was such a brilliant moment to watch, I wonder if there will be something similar this time around.

When I was in the Army I was stationed at Ft. Campbell on the Tennessee/Kentucky border about 90 NW of Nashville. I loved the drive down to Nashville on US-41A - very pretty, esp in the spring and fall.

The drive on I-24 is not bad either.

My grandmother had ten brothers and sisters and they all grew up (and stayed) in Robertson County, Tennessee. There is a small town named Greenbriar - outside of Goodlettsville, outside of Springfield, outside of Nashville - where if there isn't someone in your family related to a Suter, Choate, or Shannon then you must be 'new'. The countryside is gorgeous and fertile. I spent time there when I was younger so I didn't really notice or care about the political climate but I do remember that your family was whispered about if you missed church one Sunday. The majority of my family in the area are farmers and if they don't farm they at least have a garden. Every place has problems. Sometimes it's easier to deal with them in fresh, clean air while looking at rolling hills and gorgeous vistas. :)

message 9394: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments The Welsh have a gorgeous anthem; Scotland hasn't got an official one though. Which of the optional Scottish ones are you referring to Jane? I know there are a couple of choices - if they vote for independence in September, they're going to need to pick something. :)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments Gretchen wrote: "I see that another airplane disappeared today. I don't understand how with all the technology we possess today something as large as an airplane can just disappear."

A jammer or pulling a wire would do it. Flying below radar reach is also another method. The same methods smugglers use. Making a plane disappear isn't that difficult really. Also, it depends on the technology available in the areas where the planes disappear. Some areas aren't covered by radar and that. So, they have to go back and look at satellite coverage - if there was any footage taken at the time.

Right. I understand how "easy" it is to make a plane disappear. It just surprises me that in a post 9/11 world, someone hasn't figured out how to make it harder, if that makes sense. Of course then someone figures that out and the wheel just keeps spinning.
