Bubble and squeak is a cooked dish of fried up left over vegetables. Major ingredients are potatoes and cabbage, but other vegetables are acceptable. Potatoes can be sliced boiled ones, or even left over mash. It's an old northern England dish. :)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments Very similar to colcannon from the sounds of it.

message 9103: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (last edited Jul 03, 2014 07:43PM) (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Similar, except it is pan fried left overs, rather than a deliberately made dish. :)

Traditionally it's fried in butter (I use olive oil) and the only seasonings should be salt and pepper.

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments My dad's family are of Irish descent and pretty proud of their roots. About aged 7 I got taken to a relative's place for lunch and she served colcannon.

My dad asked me what I thought of it. My reply. "She's really buggered up this bubble and squeak, dad." He nearly bust something laughing. My aunt was NOT impressed, and my mum was soooo embarrassed.

Terri | 19576 comments For me, Bubble and Squeak is only ever cabbage and mashed potato. Then lots of yummy Tomato sauce (ketchup to the US) poured on top. :]
To those unsure how it is cooked..it is cooked in a frying pan like a large potato cake.

I agree that American ketchup is eww... I refuse to eat that stuff. But, at least in Europe, ketchup tastes so much differently. I love spicy Polish ketchup. It actually tastes like tomatoes than whatever chemicals they make the American stuff out of.

Gretchen (eab2012) Happy 4th of July to all my fellow Americans! To those of you not in America, Happy Friday!!

My grandma use to make a ketchup with a German recipe. I didn't like it when I was little so I can't say if I remember how different it is from American ketchup. We also use to make a lot of horseradish. Best way to keep your sinuses clear!

message 9118: by Linda (new)

Linda I'd never heard of bangers and mash, bubble and squeak or colcannon. I spent some time on Wikipedia and learned something. Not sure I'll be running to the kitchen to try them out any time soon but if I have leftovers I might try it and let my hubby wonder what the heck that is.

Gretchen (eab2012) Does anyone else get the ad boxes that show what kind of drinks would pair well with certain books? I need a whole new list, a td (to-drink) list. None of the books that pop up look any good but the drinks sure do.

Oh dear. That looks dangerous. I am under no circumstances ever allowed to drink Long Islands. That was a bad night, or so I hear.

Alicja (darkwingduckie7) | 657 comments When I was little grandma used to cook things like Flaki (beef tripe soup), blood sausage (pan fried with onion), and jellied pigs feet when I was little. Mind, I've been veg*n for 4 years now and even years and years before I tended not to eat that stuff but if you were to ask my 10-year old self I would have told you all that was delicious.

Terri | 19576 comments All this talk of corned beef. I might do Corned Beef for dinner tonight.
In our family, with Corned Beef, we only ever have cabbage and mashed potato. The cabbage and mashed potato are not mixed together. they are served as sides, it is your job to mix them together with your fork....with half a litre of tomato sauce. :D

(there's that tomato sauce again. Love the stuff)

message 9138: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 728 comments Haha! I did corned beef in the slow cooker last night, with lots of veggies in white sauce, and baked veggies baked nice and crisp. It was then used again tonight in what we commonly call a "mongrel mix" in our house. All mixed up reheated and on toast! Good luck with the corned beef Terri! :)

message 9139: by Alan (new)

Alan | 15 comments Terri, yes it is good and with the tomato sauce too, better than Vegemite which everyone seemed to eat when I was in Queensland many years ago, haha.

message 9140: by Andy (new)

Andy | 1511 comments corned beef hash was my "speciality" as a student when it was my turn to cook - it was corned beef & mash plus ANYTHING else within budget into the mix - even did an oriental one with beansprouts once (leftovers from the local chinky from the w/end) lol

we were pooooor but not hungry (or thirsty) students!

That was my reaction too :D

Jam and Kraft Singles is right up there Dawn. I don't count the Singles as actual cheese...more like a 'imitation cheese-like product".

message 9147: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) A very good 'imitation cheese-like product'!! :)

Though I have abandoned the jam these days, I just stick to grilled cheese.
